Coming from a Nintendo Life interview with Director Junichi Masuda and Designer Hironobu Yoshida...

Of course I have a lot of ideas every time around, so quite a few of them didn’t make it into the final game... But one thing that I wanted to put in that didn’t quite make it was a translating machine for Pokémon cries, to find out what they’re saying. (When a Pokemon was selected, text would appear telling you exactly what it was saying) I really wanted to put that in, but then thinking about the amount of text that we would have to include, with now over 600 Pokémon, it would be a really big task.

While the idea may have not made the cut for Pokemon X/Y, Masuda hopes to bring it to life in some way in the future.

What do you guys think of this? Sounds interesting, to say at least. XD

certainly an interesting idea. i dont see many practical applications for it tghough, except perhaps during pokemon-amie?

That would have been really interesting. Maybe we will see the feature coming to life in the third version/sequels.

I think this would make meowth and other talking pokemon, and N a bit less special.

Wasn't the Devon Corporation trying to do this?
You know what I am gonna to say, right? You... You asked for this...

Hoenn Remakes confirmed!!

But seriously, this feature would be even cooler than the "walking Pokémon" feature from HGSS. Talking with the Pokémon would make them feel a bit more... real.

I don't like the idea and I hope it doesn't happen in the future. It just sounds silly to me and I can't take it seriously. I've never been a fan of talking Pokémon and I just don't really want to know what they're saying. I just prefer them as animals with superpowers, and the less humanoid or human-like the better in my opinion.

This feels like a big gimmick to me.

I'd prefer to see it as a side game solely dedicated to it, like Hey, You, Pikachu! as opposed as an added in feature in the main games.

Most Pokemon seem to have the intelligence of a dolphin or a gorilla - which is enough for rudimentary language. It's not outside of my realm of suspension of disbelief.

I'm unsure. I think this kind of thing is best left to a spinoff. I think the Amie does enough to add personality to the pokes by itself.

It's almost like everything they put in for the Devon Co. is something Game Freak wants to do.

Waiting for my Pokemon Transformer.

I don't see how when they have a natural ability to speak and understand.

What if the next Mystery Dungeon game tied all of these together? Maybe you use the transformer to become a Pokemon so that you can study how Pokemon talk and use that information to make a translator?

I'm kinda glad it was left out. I love imagining my Pokemon with a personality based on their traits and my headcannon, and something in the game would kinda ruin that for me. Like the "Dr. Footstep" guy in Gen IV. It was a decent idea, but poorly executed

Dr. Footstep's main purpose was a friendship checker. You could assume that he made generalized comments about what he thought the pokemon was feeling through their footprints.

From the sound of it, it sounds like this would be different. Since there's emphasis on too many words/characters in conjunction with the number of pokemon...maybe different pokemon would have had their own sayings or clusters of sayings depending on the level of friendship and personality.

It would be a cool little feature to have. The depth of it would depend on how far they get into it. They could have generic ones for all of them/certain types etc.
