I've been watching speculation videos about Pokémon Sun & Moon lately, and a great theory has hit me.
It's too in-depth to be posted on an already existing thread (I believe, anyway), so I'm posting it as its own thread.
It's weird, different and a little extreme but hear me out.

Pokémon RéBurst has come into discussion a lot lately, what with SM's logos involving what appears to be a Burst Stone in the same way that XY's logos had the Mega Evolution DNA symbol.
Now, you're all probably aware of this but I'll brief it just in case. The RéBurst Manga's "gimmick" involved trainers and Pokémon merging after forming a special bond, and the stone involved with this is identical to the stone in SM's logos, implying that this mechanic will make its way into the Gen 7 games.
While it may sound like a crazy theory purely based on similarities, there's actually a lot more to it.

Let's look at Ash's Greninja in the Anime, it's the result of Ash and Greninja strengthening their bond to the point where Greninja takes on a form with characteristics of Ash, similar to Burst evolution.
Ash's Greninja, along with Zygarde's formes, have had zero representation in the videogames, save for an event Greninja with a moveset to match its Anime counterpart.
This leads me to believe that the Greninja is the introduction to a next Gen feature, similar to how Blaziken and Kecleon appeared at the end of Gen II's Anime, May owning Munchlax in Gen III, and Alexa introducing Noivern, Helioptile and Gogoat in Gen V.
We also have implications in XY as to what could be next, with the Sun Dial having something to do with Mega Evolution, and a Moon Dial being hinted at.
The Moon Dial could easily be in one of the areas of Kalos that we couldn't go to in XY, which could easily be accessible as part of SM's storyline.

My next point, AZ's Floette is a "Burst evolved Floette".
Now, AZ and Floette don't exactly share the same characteristics, but his Floette's colour scheme is rather regal and majestic, and could be a reflection of how AZ looked while he was the king.
It would make sense considering the bond between AZ and Floette, and how Floette came back to him.

While none of this leads to any possible answers in relation to Zygarde, it's clear the Zygarde will play a big part of the story with, perhaps, the Strange Souvenir being related to how Zygarde changes.

To me, all this seems to be pointing to SM being XY sequels the same way GS were RB sequels, given that the games' names are relevant to XY, how we skipped over "Pokémon Z" and all these implications and hints we've been getting.

Where's all this going? Well, to me it seems as though SM will take place 3 years after XY, the second half of the game will be in Kalos + new areas of Kalos, and every question regarding Mega Evolution, AZ and Floette, and Zygarde will be answered.

The only problem I see with this is that Bursts in the ReBURST manga are a physical fusion of the trainer and its Pokémon. Ash-Greninja is more of a spiritual link (despite Ash being able to feel his Greninja's pain). I much prefer the latter in comparison.

My next point, AZ's Floette is a "Burst evolved Floette".
If they were going to do that way ahead of time, they probably wouldn't have had the Eternal Flower Floette be its own separate Pokémon already in the coding of XY and ORAS (in which its stats are different, and its learnset mirrors Floette save for its signature move at Level 50, Light of Ruin). It's interesting to think about, but then why would it be for Floette and not for Florges? It's like giving Pikachu a Mega Evolution when it already evolves into Raichu.

I think there's a reason the Manga tanked, and they seem to have fixed that, I think it's a case of them deciding to make it work rather than making it Digimon.
And I think they may have originally planned to have it in XY in some way but decided to save it too late? I guess that'd make sense.
But also look at RéBurst, Burst Warriors don't fuse exclusively with fully evolved Pokémon.

Oh god, I hope this Burst crap doesn't become canon in the games. I don't need my pokemon to be Digimon. I didn't even like it in Digimon.

I do think SM are going to be sequels to XY as you suggested, but I don't think something like burst evolution will be introduced, at least not as a feature you can do with just any pokemon. Perhaps ONE specific legendary pokemon that is plot relevant, and happens once because PLOT and then never again, but other than that, nope. They just introduced Mega Evolution last gen and will be able to milk that for some time yet, since 2/3 of final evolution dex pokemon still don't have megas. Adding a new extensive gimmick at this point seems like a waste of Game Freak's time and seems like it would be way too complex and take up too much space in the game program. Personally, I think the diamond-shaped gem's similarity to Burst gems or whatever is a coincidence, a diamond is a very generic shape after all, not to mention if I understand correctly, the manga this appeared in wasn't popular and was dropped. I could be wrong, but I think for now at least that sort of thing isn't going to happen. More likely the diamond shaped gems relate to an item to summon a legendary or some aspect of the legendaries themselves.

It's a really good theory, but it sounds awfully complicated to the series to incorporate at a point where the higher ups claim to be reverting back to simplicity for the next games...

I'm also firmly on the "keep reBURSTs out of the games" camp. Personally it was pretty bad and really didn't fit with the series even in the manga. Go make some other cartoon monsters to play out your human-animal fusing fantasies with. Leave it out of an established series like pokemon (or digimon too...from what I've been reading).

Though despite not liking and being kind of grossed out by physical fusions, I'm all for something like Ash-Greninja. The whole Stand type spiritual fusion fits better with the whole feel of the series more so than actual human/pokemon fusion. Mostly because you aren't trapping them into diamond and using them for your own means but you're still technically bonding with them and that seems like the logical end point in the whole bonding subplot that got started with the mega evolution story.

I'm also for pokemon/pokemon fusions, but considering the lore that's better left with kyurem.

Even though I would like S/M to be their own thing, I'm also very open to the idea of them being the "Gen 2" to X/Y. The thing about the sundials and moondials is primarily the only thing that I could think of that would lead me to consider them going that Route(THAT IS NOT A PUN I SWEAR ON FLYGON'S MEGA-GRAVE).

As for the ReBURST thing... ehh, I don't know. I've never read the manga, so I couldn't give a proper opinion on it. I think implementing an Ash-Greninja mechanic would be cool though... I had hoped that all 3 Kalos starters would have gotten this treatment in the event of a "Z", but ehh. I think it's possible that we may get a brand-new mechanic that could be a step up from Mega Evolution and closer to the ReBURST or Ash-Greninja idea, but we'll see. Those colored diamonds in the S/M titles do have me interested on what they might be.

Well th there's still the tcg term break evolution we have to consider. Maybe instead of new designs we get everything dipped in gold. Would you guys be more open to this than burst evolution?

I don't see how that would be any different from Mega Evolution, in fact it'd probably be far more lame because they wouldn't get a redesign.
BREAK Evolution would probably be a far more relevant concept if it directly tied in with the in-game mechanics, but I doubt that the XY TCG are previewing anything but Zygarde and Ash-Greninja for Generation VII.

I don't see what that would even offer the series
Well we have no need for new designs which means more megas. Flygon failure isn't a possibility with this idea. It's simple and a great way to save time. Of course we could just have a color change instead of slapping gold to everything.

I really like this. It would be great if Sun and Moon were sequels to XY because there is no confirmation on Zygarde's forms being anime exclusive or not. Plus AZ's Floette hasn't been released and stuff like the ghost girl that needs addressing. Anyway, I would definitely get Sun and Moon if they are indeed sequels.

Yeah, but that'd be so underwhelming coming off of all the Mega Evolution redesigns we got only for future instances of powerups to simply be a colour change. And speaking of...
Of course we could just have a color change instead of slapping gold to everything.
That's what Shiny Pokémon are supposed to be.

But shiny pokemon don't have nothing to do with ability or stat changes. Also while underwhelming you can't really redesigning every final pokemon form.

You don't make something as exciting as a Mega Evolution-esque form change be as underwhelming as a colour change, though! That's all I'm trying to say with that. It also undermines the value of shiny Pokémon.
Also while underwhelming you can't really redesigning every final pokemon form.
They've got 670+ to go in the entire Pokédex (disregarding how 70% of that are pre-evolutions), and only more to come, so trust me - they have a lot of room to design new Mega Evolutions for the final stage mons. The question's not quantity, it's quality. Trust me when I say that not many would expect Beedrill of all Pokémon to get a Mega Evolution (designed by Hitoshi Ariga, no less!), among other things, so it's certainly not impossible for them to design something outlandish for every mon out there.

I'm just saying it as a possibility, I think it's just gonna be for the legendaries. Also yeah they might have something for everything, but they also might not.

Funnily enough, I'm not keen on the whole Burst idea, but hopefully if they do it it'll be done right and not like some over-the-top Anime nonsense.

The sequel part would really be interesting if it were true, but isn't SM already somewhat confirmed to be in a new region. GS/HGSS are some of the best games as a two in one game, but they still did have a new region involved that was a neighboring region. I don't think the idea of burst evolution sounds like something I would like at all.

So Super Saiyan mode?

I don't see them adding any new extensive gimmicks in this gen. Like I said, maybe one offs for the plot, but Mega Evolution is still very fresh. Regardless of how cool the mechanic, it just doesn't seem like a smart idea to introduce something new yet. It would be wiser for them to hold onto it until the glimmer from mega evolution starts to fade. And it may never fade since pokemon can have more than one mega evolution as it is. There are already infinite possibilities with mega evolution. Adding something else right now would just make the game clunkier and more confusing.
