This thread is similar to the "moves you think a Pokemon should have" thread, only this is to do with typing :)

I don't know if this thread has been done before, please let me know if it has.

Anyway, I'll start. This isn't exactly a new suggestion, but I strongly believe Dewott and Samurott should have been Fighting type Pokemon.

I also believe that Golduck should have been Water/Psychic, and that Emboar should have been Fire/Dark.

What Pokemon do you think should have had different types?

Gyarados- Water/Dragon
Charizard- Fire/Dragon
Psyduck/Golduck- Water/Psychic. I was actually pretty surprised when I found out this wasn't their types.
Venomoth- Poison/Flying
Those are some pretty common ones, but they're all I can think of for now.

Masquerain - Bug/Water.
Flygon - Bug/Dragon.
Arbok - Poison/Dark.
Dunsparce - Normal/Ground.
Sudowoodo Grass/Rock.
Ariados - Bug/Dark.
Glalie - Ice/Dark.
Electibuzz/Electivire - Electric/Fighting.
Pinsir - Bug/Fighting.

I don't understand why people want Charizard to be Dragon-type. It's based on the European dragon, yes, but a lot of things are. Plus, a Dragon-type starter wouldn't really be a good idea at all. I can see Gyarados being Dragon-type, though.

I'm sorry GatoRage, I wasn't aware you had already made a thread.

Nidoking/Nidoqueen: Poison/Dragon
Drowzee/Hypno: Dark
Seadra: Water/Dragon
Gyarados: Water/Dragon
Drifloon/Drifblim: Flying/Fire
Stunky/Skuntank: Poison/Fire

Paras/Parasect - Bug/Poison (I like using Parasect, but Bug/Grass is a death sentance)
Gastly/Haunter/Gengar - Ghost (Absolutely hated them being part poison since day one. Only made sense in Gen I so they weren't too advantageous with types. That backfired anyway because they got pwned by psychic and still do today to an extent))
Gyarados - Pure Dragon or Water/Dragon (Same as above, yes it's based on the story of the carps that jumped over a gate and turned into Dragons, but Water/Flying are shackles that make it easy to electrocute)

Vespiquen should be Bug/Dark. It's a pretty ominous-looking Pokémon to begin with. Plus, it alleviates the 4x weakness to Rock.

One annoying thing that always crops up in retyping discussion is the way people slap the Dark type onto just about anything. It's not a "Darkness", "Shadow" or "Emo/Goth" type or any nonsense like that. The Japanese name is the Evil type.

Their defining characteristics include natural tendencies for savagery, mischief or deception. Some have abilities which instil fear or panic, while others have ruthless social hierarchies. Unless these sorts of things are explicitly mentioned by Pokedex entries, the Pokemon isn't really suited to being a Dark type. Winstein did a fantastic blog on this recently.

Some Pokemon which would make good Dark types IMHO would be Mawile or Seviper. On the other hand, I don't think Absol should have been a Dark type. It lacks any defining "evil" behaviours or abilities, not to mention it's willingness to help humans and Justified ability suggests the opposite. It's association with bringing "disasters" is a human construct, which shouldn't affect it's typing. Given it's precognitive abilities, I think a Psychic typing would have suited it much better.

Cofagrigus could`ve been either a Ghost/Steel or Ghost/Rock type. Would`ve made sense with it being a coffin and all.

It may be the Evil type in Japan, but that's a terrible name for it. Shadow Pokemon are the evil ones, regular Pokemon are incapable of evil. I see the Dark type as being either cunning/tricky/dirty fighting or drawn to darkness (like Sableye) or even just associated with negative connotations (like Absol and disaster).

Dark types aren't usually evil, but exhibited a characteristic suite of natural behaviours which could be better described as antagonistic. You can have the qualities of an antagonist without being one yourself. No, Sableye is a Dark type because it has a mischeivous nature and likes to play pranks on people to get their attention. Being drawn to darkness has nothing to do with it, otherwise every damn cave-dwelling and nocturnal Pokemon would be a Dark type.

Why should what humans think have any impact on a Pokemon's typing at all? Those abilities are inherent to the Pokemon themselves, not given by the humans ex-nominating them.

Isn't the "evil" type supposed to be Ghost?

Anyways, I could see both Dratini & Dragonair retyped to Water, and Dragonite as a Water Dragon. Considering their line's association with water, it kinda makes sense to me.

No, I meant Absol's actual connection to disaster, not the misconception in-universe humans make by thinking it is the cause of the disasters.

That's how I see it too, but unfortunately that doesn't always happen. The Gothita line are sneaky, manipulative, and cunning, but they haven't put a Dark-type on them. Personally I think Absol's okay the way it is. But that's just personally, and I'm sure not everyone agrees.
