Pokemon's anime style then or now?

So I've been re-watching some older episodes from Pokemon back in season 2 and it's pretty obvious the art style has changed in the past 10 years. But I've been wanting to know what you guys prefer in terms of the style from say how it was in the year 2000 to now the year 2013?

I have no idea if this is a bad question or not but I'd like to ask it at least.

Personally I'm kind of torn between the two and probably the only real reason I'd say the older style is due to the nostalgia. But the quality is pretty bad due to the age of some of the episodes (well, from my experience) but when it comes to the newer episodes I just don't seem to like the way everything is made. The storylines seem better, but the artwork/style somehow doesn't agree with me in the newer series.


Hopefully this is worth a new topic, so what are your opinions?

BW series or AG- D/P times? Kanto had different animation style too. I miss the both older animations, BW wasn't my favorite animation wise but X and Y is giving me hope, Ash looks ten times better in the new series.

I think I liked AG - D / P animation the best.

The newer series, definitely. Higher quality, better coloring, and fewer errors. The only part I don't like is the evolution glow. it looks too watery. xP

I think I liked AG - D / P animation the best.

I guess I'd say to compare from the old series to the Diamond and Pearl series and onwards. I haven't really gotten the time to watch the B/W series yet but I did see trailers for it and bits of episodes on tv.

But I do agree ash looks pretty cool in the latest picture I've seen.

I do think much of the newer animation is over-the-top (especially with the TR motto), and some of the attacks are shown to be taking too much time to power up. Especially Quick Attack. In the old days, Ash would say "Pikachu, use Quick Attack!" and the lagomouse would immediately be in motion. Now it takes about two seconds for Pika to get moving. So much for "quick."

I also prefer the old-style glowamorphosis. It really looked like a whole lotta power was being unleashed.

The OS,AG and BW series had much more better animation then the DP series had, the XY anime series animation looks really great.

The Original Series animation. I just like it so much better. Not that I can't live with the current animation, but the current animation feels so plastic and over-the-top bright at times. The greasy old look of the earlier episodes certainly had its charms and I still like it (when I watch older episodes back).

Though I must say XY's animation looks promising.

Late DP has the best animation style as now. BW has some weird animation, it looked a bit off to me.

I like old animation better. The new one has its perks like HD trees, sky, water etc but in the old one attacks were less sparkly and characters were drawn with better color, brightness, and facial expressions.

Animation:

1) Cel-Shaded (Beginning of Kanto-Late OS)
2) Late OS/Early-Mid AG Animation
3) XY Animation
4) BW Animation
5) DP Animation
6) Late AG/Early DP Animation

I don't mind, but I prefer the older cel-shaded animation myself. It just seemed so much more vibrant and classic to me. :thumbup:

Meh while BW had horrible content and animation that got old when each one was reused about 3000000 times each it was still miles ahead of DP which left AG in the dust etc.

I like the OS-Johto, DP, BW, and XY Animation. In looking back at some of the episodes, I didn't really AG for some reason (I just remember it being dark).

I think I have to prefer the original. It feels so much more Pokemon-like.

It's good to see others agree. Although not part of the main series and not much is known, I do quite like the style of the Pokemon: The origin special. It looks pretty decent imo.

XY and the end of OS are probably my favorites. AG is by far the worst, especially when you look at the Battle Frontier saga.

I think the animation just gets better and better, personally. But I can't stand looking back on the old episodes sometimes because the art is so grody and bland until late Johto. AG's animation wasn't that great either; the style was getting closer to what we have today, but the people looked really awkward at times. Honestly, I think the newer episodes aren't as bright and neon as people say, and usually it looks great. Though I do prefer XY's animation because the colors feel warmer.

AG's animation was pretty awesome, actually. At least until Battle Frontier: that's when it started getting pretty shoddy. I don't think I need to remind everyone of "Gathering the Gang of Four." Ewww....animation wise.

Early DP was really bad in the animation department as well. "Dawn of a New Era," anyone? Yuck.

Finally, as good as the Butterfree filler was in Da!, the animation there in that episode of late BW was bad for Ash.

I dunno, I find the animation quality is all over the place no matter what part of the series you're looking at, though some quality drops are more egregious than others.

As for the art style, late Johto is probably my favourite. I like the use of thicker lines, warm colours and generally the way the characters were drawn, especially Satoshi.
