uh hu... we all know...

META!!!
yeah, big deal...

RWAR!!!!!!
wtf?? Onix??

my point is, would anyone like to hazard a guess as to why, most pokemon speak though their names, and a few other pokemon speak though roars and growls?

Ive noticed that all dragon pokemon (including psudo ones) speak in the non-traditional way, if you guys can think of one that doesnt, that would be cool.
Then pokemon like Onix come in and mess up the way things work.

Ive also noticed, all final evolution psudo-legendaries speak without their names... except for Metagross. :( Perhasp its just cause hes not a dragon, I think if Onix can, Metagross should be able to, it would have made him more badass than he already was.

Again, what you guys think?

I guess its down to how they look... Onix just fits better to roar than say his name XD

Some Pokèmon seem to be saying random things too. I don't think I've ever heard Pachirisu say much else than "chippo!" which is barely a part of its name XD (Well it could be if you turn it around. Pachirisu) But its such a cute sound! :awww:
Skitty meows because its a cat (though as its a Japanese Meow it sounds like "Nya", or "Nye" as in Eneco)

Dosen't bulbapedia have a page on pikachu's lingo?

My favorite is the Kasumi-chan one and Togepi speech. Pikachu is so cute, it just makes me melt :)

Umm, Onix doesn't roar, it says its Japanese name of Iwark.

Same with Charizard saying Lizardon.

It could roar Iwark:B You can roar but still say something, just shout really really loud.

Never thought it sounded like he said that though...it sounds more like just "ooooor"

Awww I know what you mean! I didn't notice Pikachu had different lingo for different people/pokemon until I saw that page!

I always thought that Staryu's lingo was odd...

Its Japanese name is Hitodeman, so it's possible that when it's saying that "ha" sound, it's actually saying the "hi" in it's Japanese name, but saying the "i" like a "a" for some reason. Also since the "man" is supposed to be for... man, they wanted to have a humanoid sounding... um... sound.

so if you think about it, could it be that the dub was just inconsistant.

kinda like digimon where the names of the attacks were always incorrect.

As long as the language doesn't randomly change I wouldn't call it inconsistent. Not every Pokèmon HAS to say its name constantly.
Rule of Cool/Cute...whatever sounds best.

Now if Pikachu went from saying "pikachu" in one episode then squeaks in the next THAT would be inconsistent...
and hey if you think changing Digimon attack names is weird, the Norwegian dub frequently renamed several digimon and forgot about it afterwards (Seadramon for one is "Sjødramon" in its first appearance, and just plain Seadramon at any later appearance... Worst yet in one episode Monochromon was called "the single-colored ones"...no "mon"-name in sight)

yeah your right inconsistant isnt the right word... maybe just not equal to the japanese version, but the show was more aimed towards younger generations that didnt know that pokemon is in japanese first. I know when I was watching the first seasons I didnt care.

And digimon... wow really? funny how the dubs are bad in more than one language. Or maybe they're all perfect and it was the japanese that messed up the original dialogue. lol.
never watched it in japanese.

I agree. The same goes for Arbok, which yells "Chaaaaaaaaaaarboka!" instead of "Arrrrrbok!"
