Interest in a TV show generally doesn't appear out of nowhere. With Pokemon, it could be any number of things that got us hooked on it. A great amount of us saw the English dub first and then switched to the original Japanese version. For those who did that, let's discuss and vote on why.

Well, I started watching the Japanese version because it obviously airs earlier than the dub and that way I can be caught up to the current events and I wouldn't get spoiled when watching the dub.

There are many things in the Japanese version that I now find appealing but if I had to chose one specific reason, it has something to do with how the characters are characterized and voiced. Particularly Satoshi. There's something about Rica Matsumoto's voice that captures both the friendly Pokémon-loving boy from Pallet Town and the hot-blooded badass trainer that he can be. In fact, Matsumoto is pretty much the reason why I believe that Pokémon Trainer Red can have a voice and one that would encompass both his badass and compassionate side.

One thing (among many) that has drawn me to the Japanese version is that its soundtrack is both superior and at an acceptable volume level. I mean, I might actually appreciate the different soundtrack in the dubbed version if not for the fact that the majority of time it's at an unbelievably low level. Most of the time you hear the dialog, which though I appreciate it sticking as close as possible to the original version, you can definitely tell it doesn't have nearly as much spirit/effort put into it. I'm still scratching my head as to why the dub needs to completely overhaul its soundtrack, I mean I can understand replacing the insert song that includes Japanese lyrics, but the entire soundtrack, seriously?

For me its mostly the music and voice acting. Shinji Miyazaki's score is a thing of beauty, and Rica [Matsumoto] kicks all kinds of ass as a lead and singer.

-It airs first.
-No silly music or low-volume music that ends up being distracting.
-This may be your typical otaku answer, but the voice acting and the way they pronounce some terms sounds quite badass.
-Long openings, Pokemon TV segments and previews make the product feel more complete. I'd like to say the same about endings but in XY they have been pure crap.
