AUTHOR'S NOTE: If you look at my signature, you'll see I've been working on a Legends: Z-A AU by the name of Poly Paxton, which stars Team MZ as a poly ship with children. And I've decided it's finally time to get this AU on the road proper. So this here is a collection of one-shots taking place in the Poly Paxton universe! This first chapter I wrote as something of a Christmas present for the forum.
Merry Christmas Bulbapedia, and I hope you enjoy my present!
Many thanks to dragons_tree on AO3 for beta reading this.

A Morning with the Tranmetsewlives
Darkness. That was what stretched in every direction. It had the room gripped in its noir embrace, draped over the bedsheets, embracing the walls, clinging to the ceiling. Nothing was moving, the air lay thick and tranquil. The only sign of life was the alarm clock, its soft red numbers marching along to the beat of time.

In one moment, it read 6:59. And then in another, it read 7:00. The silence was interrupted by the alarm beeping, just as it was programmed to do. And then the stillness was broken too. Shooting out from the bed, an arm swatted at the clock. It groped around for a few seconds looking for the silence button, and after several attempts the arm found its target. With a click, the beeping cut off, only to be replaced by groaning. The sheets began to heave and ho. Something stirred underneath them. And then, the bed shifted slightly as Paxton Megania Tranmetsewlive rose from his slumber, his brain casting off the shackles of sleep to begin what he expected to be just an ordinary Tuesday morning.

As his senses woke up - the crisp air against his skin, the softness of the bedsheets, the peace and quiet of the room - the Kalos Champion rubbed his eyes to chase the sleep away and gave a good hearty stretch to his arms, before turning his attention to his surroundings. Although the lack of light was seriously hampering his ability to discern what lay in his room, he could already pick out the silhouettes of several objects. His eyes were first drawn to a large rectangle that hung on the wall opposite from him. Squinting a little bit, Paxton could make out the outline of a familiar logo on the rectangle. Seeing the swishes and swoops of the M and Z on the logo, Paxton felt a feeling of nostalgia wash over him. Nostalgia for a time when he was traversing Lumiose City, helping out its citizens and saving all those Pokémon from the clutches of Rogue Mega Evolution. Those days may have been long behind him, but his lips curled upward into a smile as memories flitted through his head.

He found his eyes unconsciously wandering from the flag to his bedside table, where they fell upon a small rectangular object that lay just by the alarm clock. Its face bore three stripes of blue, red and black, accompanied by a white triangle with a yellow heart on it. And from there his little visual tour flowed quite nicely into the next object Paxton glanced at - on the other side of the alarm clock stood an ornate picture frame, its gold exterior decorated with molds of Zygarde Cells and Cores. And he felt his smile grow as he gazed at the picture within.

Even through the inky void of shadow, he could see the picture as clear as day. Standing proudly in the front and centre was Paxton himself, clad in a black tuxedo with the biggest smile he could manage. By his side were three familiar figures. One had hair that burned like a two-tone sunset, the second had their arm in the air and looked like they were about to break out in dance, and the third figure’s brown skin contrasted nicely with the others’ paler tones. Oh, that was the happiest day of his life…

Then Paxton turned around… and there they lay. He felt his heart swell at the sight of the three faces from the photo. As he unconsciously eyed them he couldn’t help but reminisce on just how far they had come since that fateful holiday. Once upon a time, his three bedmates were his comrades in Team MZ, working together to help AZ atone for his sins and save the city from Ange’s terrible power. Then they were his roommates and his closest friends, then his companions as he travelled the region on his quest to become Champion, then his romantic partners… and now… his husband and wives. If you had told him this would be the eventual outcome of his holiday, he probably would’ve called you insane, but now he knew this was what the universe destined for him, and he couldn’t imagine it any other way.

Suddenly his observation of the tranquil scene was disrupted as Paxton heard moaning and shuffling coming from the other side of the bed. And within seconds, his three partners rose from their lying position like soldiers in formation. He watched them intently as they went through the same waking motions he did, before their eyes slid open. Paxton was greeted by three pairs of glossy orbs - blue, dull purple, onyx - all studying him intently and lovingly. He took a breath.

“Good morning, mes amours.”, he greeted in a soft, warm tone.

“Morning, Paxie.”

“Good morning, Pax-Pax.”

“Morning to you, love.”

“Did everyone have a good sleep? No bad dreams?” he asked.

“I sure did.”

"Same here.”

“Slept like a stone.”

“Good, good. That makes me happy.” Paxton smiled, assured his partners were getting good sleep. “And I’m happy to tell you I slept well too.” He eyed up his partners like a carnivore stalking their prey. “Can I just say you all look gorgeous, even in the darkness?” This compliment elicited giggles and thanks from his partners.

But with that the train of thought reached the station, for they had a day to prepare for.

“Well, we’d better get up and start getting ready for the day. But first, it’s time for hugs and kisses!” he declared.

Paxton then took Taunie’s face in his hands, leaned in and pressed his lips against hers. It was a ritual they’d done many times before, and both of them enjoyed the feeling. He closed his arms around her head and pulled her deeper into the kiss, savouring the strawberry flavour of her lipstick. The others watched on as they embraced, a physical symbol of the love they held for each other. Eventually Paxton and Taunie separated, and Paxton turned his attention to Naveen next, wrapping his arms around his back and capturing him in a kiss too, this one tasting of rum’n’raisin. The other two watched this display of affection unfold, before Paxton released him and finished by embracing Lida and closing the gap between their lips, a vanilla flavour gracing his mouth.

A few seconds passed before Paxton pulled away. Taunie and Naveen looked at each other, and a silent message crossed them. They leaned into each other and as their arms intertwined their mouths landed on each other, their eyes closing as their lips interlocked. One kiss later they separated and Taunie took Lida next, their soft moans indicating they were enjoying this ritual as Paxton and Naveen brushed their hair out of their eyes. Finally Naveen took Lida to complete the ritual.

With the kisses and hugs complete, Paxton spoke. “Okay, NOW we need to get up.”

Lida moaned. “Out of the way, Navi. I REALLY need to pee.”

“Same here.” Taunie replied.

And with that, in one quick motion he swung his legs over the side of the bed and levered himself off of it. He took a second to stretch his legs before walking over to the window, pulling the blind up to let natural light into the bedroom. Looking back he saw his husband and wives were also getting out of bed - Naveen stretched his legs while Taunie and Lida headed to the bathroom to relieve themselves. Then Paxton suddenly heard his stomach grumble. “Okay everyone, first item on the agenda for today - breakfast.” he declared.

“Whose turn is it to cook today?” Naveen questioned.

“I’m pretty sure it’s Taunie’s.” Paxton replied. His Rotom Phone fluttered to his side, and checking the chore chart he could confirm that yes, his wife was in charge of breakfast today. A smile cracked on both men’s faces. That was all they needed to hear to know breakfast was going to be amazing.

“Oh yeah!” Naveen replied. “Breakfast is going to be fantastique.”

“It sure is.” Paxton replied. Sliding their slippers on, the two men waited out the tinkles of their wives obtaining sweet release, then the hiss of the sink as they washed their hands. Finally Taunie emerged from the bathroom, Lida following her, and Paxton stepped aside to allow them past. Taunie crossed over to the door, pulled it open and exited the bedroom. “Follow me to the kitchen. Curry croissants sound good?”

“Can’t wait.” Naveen replied.

The others slipped their slippers on before filing out of the bedroom. Crossing the hallway from the master bedroom to the kitchen, they found Taunie was already at the fridge, pulling out the curry ingredients. With a box of berries in hand, she laid them on the kitchen counter before heading over to the pantry, retrieving a box of croissants and some other curry ingredients. She looked up and noticed them standing there, and smiled.

“Do you need some help there?” Paxton offered.

“I’d appreciate it.” Taunie accepted. “Naveen, would you mind preparing our morning coffees? Paxie, get a pan ready for me, and then you and Lida can set the table.”

“Got it.” And with that the other three split up to perform their assigned tasks. From the pantry Naveen produced some coffee pods and mugs and loaded them into the coffee machine. There was a soft clatter as Paxton loaded a pan onto the hotplates before applying some olive oil. And Lida carried a stack of plates over to the massive dining table, laying each one in position on the placemats as Paxton accented them with utensils and serviettes. And before long, breakfast was well and truly on its way.

Once the setting of the table was done Paxton and Lida returned to the kitchen, where an amazing smell was now wafting from the pan where Taunie was working, They savoured the aroma with their noses.

“She’s so cute when she’s working.” Paxton commented.

“Yeah.” Lida replied. They stood there as Taunie poured the chopped berries and ingredients into the pan as it sizzled and sautéed. Her blonde and pink hair looked almost hypnotic in the light, like a lava lamp.

“Coffee preferences?” Naveen asked from the coffee machine as he filled the last mug with the liquid of modern life.

“Cream and three sugars for me.” Paxton requested.

“Same here.” Lida continued.

“I’ll have just one sugar.” said Taunie as she stirred the pan’s contents.

“And I’ll have mine with one sugar too.” said Naveen as he set about adjusting the coffees to everyone’s preferences. Soon he had them perfected and handed everyone their cup, Paxton wasting no time taking a sip of that sweet caffeinated drink of heaven. He could almost feel it waking him up, chasing away those last few dregs of stubborn sleep.

“You’re the master of coffee, you know that, Navi?” Paxton stated.

“Heh. An artist has to know exactly what he needs to stay concentrated.” Naveen commented.

A few more minutes ticked by, Taunie working her magic, and Paxton, Naveen and Lida watching with ever-growing anticipation.

“Morning, Dad!”

That sound had come from the direction of the door from the far side of the living room, and it reminded Paxton that he was not just the saviour of Lumiose and the Champion of Kalos, but a father too. When he looked over at the door in question, he saw two blonde-haired figures standing at the doorway. The smile on his face deepened as he walked over to greet them.

“Good morning, Seine and Loire.” He gave them both a hug and pressed a flurry of kisses to both of their foreheads. “Did my little champion and my player one sleep well last night?”

“You bet I did!” Seine replied with energy in their voice.

“Same here.” said Loire in a quieter tone.

“That’s good to hear.” Paxton returned. “Well, breakfast is going to be ready soon, so go ahead and take your seats. Your mom is making curry croissants.”

The two teenagers separated from their father and proceeded to the kitchen. As Paxton watched them set seated he knew he had one last thing to do before Taunie served up.

“I’m gonna go get the triplets up now, okay?”

“Okay Paxie.” Taunie replied.

Paxton then entered the hallway and made his way down to the white door at the very end. Grabbing the handle and pushing it open, the room beyond greeted him with the sight of a single large bed in the centre. And lying against the pillow were three small faces. Paxton clutched his chest as he surveyed the adorable scene, before he made his way over to the bed. He took a breath.

“Naissa! Vie! Mort! Rise and shine!” he said in a sing-song voice. The three children stirred before their eyes slid open and landed on their father. Vie and Mort were both smiling, although Vie’s smile was bigger, and Naissa was frowning a little.

“Good morning, mes doux bébés.”

“Morning, Daddy!” Vie and Mort replied in unison. Father reached out and enveloped his children in a hug, peppering them with kisses.

“Sleep well?” he asked.

“Yeah!” Vie responded. Mort’s silence he took as agreement.

Naissa groaned in irritation. “I was having such a good dream, Daddy. I was at the Interregional Rhyhorn Prix, and Serena and I were in first and just about to cross the finish line when you woke me up.”

“Good to hear you had a good sleep.” Paxton responded as he released them. “And Naissa, I'm sorry for interrupting your dream race. But I know something that’ll cheer you up! You’d better get to the kitchen - Mom is making curry croissants for breakfast!”

That immediately perked all three children up.

“Yay!” the triplets said in unison. They loved their Mom’s curry croissants. And before Paxton could say anything else Naissa practically leapt out of her bed and ran full speed out of the room.

Heh. Classic Naissa, Paxton thought. He turned around and left the triplets’ bedroom, heading back towards the kitchen. When he reentered the kitchen Naissa was already seated at the dining table with Seine and Loire. It wasn’t long before Vie and Mort joined them.

“I’m just about to dish up. Better get seated, Pax-Pax.”

And obliging the command, Paxton took his seat at one end of the table. He watched and waited patiently as Taunie laid a croissant on each of the plates, and slathered them in curry, making sure to give Lida an extra-large serving. She poured the kids each a glass of water and laid the adults’ coffees on their coasters, then took her own seat. Breakfast was served.

“May we start?” Seine asked. Naissa was already raising a spoonful of curry to her mouth.

“Of course.” Taunie granted.

And with that, everyone dug in. Paxton used his spoon to cut off a bit of the croissant before scooping some curry on his spoon, and placed it all in his mouth. And when it hit his tongue… oh, the flavour! The convergence of berries, tomatoes and other ingredients, plus the croissant’s flaky texture, left his taste buds swimming in a sea of curry goodness so amazing there was no word to describe it. What could he say? His wife had done it again.

“This is just… divinely good,” said Paxton. “as always. None of the restaurants in Lumiose hold a candle to you, curry croissant."

“Aw, thanks.” Taunie replied, blushing. He leaned over and pecked her cheek, earning giggles from the table’s other occupants.

Paxton then decided to change the subject. “So what’s on everyone’s agenda for today?”

“I’m expecting business as normal at the restaurant.” said Taunie. “Not really anything of note.”

“I have a commission to work on.” Naveen continued.

“What’s it of?”

“Quasartico wants me to sculpt a new statue of Zygarde’s Complete Forme to place in Wild Zone 20. Apparently the old one was broken by some trainer in a battle accident.”

“Knowing your talent I’m confident it’ll turn out amazing.” said Paxton.

“I’m sure it will.” Naveen replied.

“Lida?” Paxton questioned his black-haired wife.

“I’m teaching a new group of students today. We’re gonna go through the dance routine of the dance-off scene in A Funkster’s Friday Night.”

“I’m sure they’ll love it.” Paxton encouraged. He then suddenly snapped his head in Naissa’s direction. The girl was scarfing her food at a pace that would make alpha Pokémon blush - half her meal had already disappeared

“Naissa!” he called out. “Not so fast - you’ll give yourself a tummyache.”

“Sorry Daddy.” Getting the message, Naissa slowed herself down.

“Kids? Any plans for today?”

“I have one of my Controller Gals streams with Cardinal this afternoon.” Loire replied.

“I’m sure it’ll be fun, but make sure you finish your homework first.” Paxton reminded. He was met with an assurance she would, but Loire’s track record on that was something of a coin toss, so he made a mental note to check on that.

“I don’t really have any plans for today.” said Seine.

“Neither do I.” said Naissa. Mort nodded in agreement.

“I have to keep the garden happy when I get back from school.” said Vie.

“You’re doing a great job with it, my little flower.” Paxton said with encouragement.

“Thanks Daddy.”

The family continued their conversation, talking, laughing and bonding, a choreography of happiness and the love that defined the Tranmetsewlive household. As Paxton gazed at the faces of these eight people that shared his home and life with him, he had to admit to himself it was still a little surreal that this symphony of heart, mind, dreams and soul had survived so long. And that made him all the more grateful for it.

But eventually everyone’s dishes were cleaned off. Taunie got up from her seat and began gathering everyone’s plates.

“Well kids,” Lida began. “you’d better go ahead and start getting ready for school.”

“Yes Mama!” And so the children all headed off to their respective bedroom to get ready for the day.

As Taunie began loading the plates into the dishwasher, Paxton turned to Naveen.

“And we’d better start getting ready to work, starting with a nice warm shower.” stated Naveen.

“Agreed.” And so Paxton and Naveen returned through the hallway to the bedroom where they woke up, before proceeding to the bathroom. They stripped their pajamas off and folded them into a neat pile on the bed before Naveen began drawing a shower. He took a few seconds to gauge the temperature of the water, and once he judged it was warm enough, he stepped under the showerhead’s spray and motioned for Paxton to join him, which he soon did, followed by their wives. Enjoying the warmth of the water Paxton squirted out a good serving of his favourite lavender shampoo and began massaging it into his scalp, his nose taking in the scent as he did so. He washed and wiped his skin, wiping off all of the accumulated oils and sweat, and rubbed some body wash into his skin.

The rest of the preparations went by smoothly. It was another ritual they had done so many times before that they lost count. After leaving the shower and drying themselves out, the parents gathered their work clothes from the wardrobe and scattered across the bedroom to get dressed. And before long Paxton was admiring himself in his heart-speckled Champions’ uniform. He finished by grabbing his black Team MZ hat, now with an ace of hearts card decorating it, and mounting it on his head.

Back in the bedroom proper the other adults were all dressed up in their work attire - Taunie in her chef’s uniform, Naveen in his grey sculpting outfit and Lida in her two-piece dance instructor outfit. They all looked so lively and colourful.

Now there were just two things left to do. Paxton reached for a small box on the right-side bedside table and grabbed it. He opened it to reveal four wedding rings. Holding out the box to his husband and wives, he watched as each partner took their appropriate ring and slipped it on their finger. Then he did the same thing. He put the box back.

“Can’t be forgetting our teams now, either.” Paxton walked over to a cabinet on the other side of the room and opened one of its four drawers, the one marked “TAUNIE”. He stepped aside to allow his wife access to retrieve the six colourful Poké Balls inside, each in the clasp of a metal claw. As Taunie picked each one up she connected its holder to one of the attachment points Naveen had sewn onto her uniform, three on each side. Once this was done Paxton closed Taunie’s drawer and opened Naveen’s letting his husband gather up his team. Then this repeated with Lida, and finally Paxton gathered his six Poké Balls from his drawer and snapped their holders into the metal rings on his uniform. But then his eyes fell onto a safe inside his drawer. He reached in and punched in a combination on the keypad, and the safe opened. Inside was a special Poké Ball, painted black with a green hexagon on the front. After examining it for a second Paxton filed the ball into his uniform’s breastpocket and closed the safe and drawer. He quickly stopped by his side of the bed to retrieve the polyamorous pride pin he always wore, and pinned it onto his uniform.

Leaving the master bedroom behind, Paxton made his way back to the living room where his partners and children were gathered, all now in their daytime attire. The children were now donning their school, bags, and Taunie was loading their lunchboxes in. Just as she slid Vie’s lunchbox in, something long caught her eye and she pulled it out. Its wrapper identified it as a Vanillnill chocolate bar on the cookies’n’cream variety.

“Vivi, were you trying to sneak this to school?” Taunie asked.

“...no?” the child replied.

Taunie sighed. “Vie, you cheeky little thing. You know you’re not allowed too many treats in one day, yes?”

Vie sighed. “...Yes, Mom.”

Soon Mort’s bag was ready too, and it was time to get going.

“Okay kids, are you ready to get going?” he asked. A choir of affirmations confirmed everyone else was ready.

“Alright, I’ll text Adrien to pick us up. Papa has to stay here and work on his commission, so let’s say goodbye to him!”

The kids all turned around and wrapped their papa in hugs, and bid him farewell.

“Goodbye Papa!” said Seine.

“See you later, Papa!” declared Loire.

“Bye-bye, Papa!” said the triplets simultaneously.

Naveen bent down and planted kisses on his children’s heads. “Goodbye my children. I love you all, and I’ll see you in the afternoon.” Another set of kisses peppered his kids’ heads.

And then the kids separated from their Papa and joined their other parents, who were walking towards the front door. Paxton pulled it open, savouring the sweet, fresh air and drawing its cool essence into his lungs with deep, controlled breaths. Naissa was first to run out, followed by Vie. Mort, the teenagers and the parents stepped out after them, Paxton locking the door behind him. He then pulled out his Rotom Phone, dismissed the lock screen and pulled up his messages app. He quickly tapped on his chauffeur’s icon and texted that they were outside. He soon responded stating he would be there in five minutes.

And sure enough, five minutes later Paxton spotted the familiar sight of a specially decorated Corviknight cab approaching. Its cry signalled the family to gather around as the cab descended into position, hitting the ground with a soft thump. Paxton pulled the door open and entered the cab, ushering his family in after him. He closed the door, and with a signal to the pilot, they were in the air.

A few minutes later, the cab landed at its first destination - North Lumiose Elementary School. Paxton pulled the door open and turned to the triplets.

“Naissa, Vie, Mort, we’re here.” He enveloped them in a hug, and the rest of the family followed as the triplets were showered with kisses. “Goodbye for now, my babies. Have a good day at school, filled with love, happiness and learning!”

“Bye-bye everyone!” said the triplets. And once their family released them Naissa was out the door, dashing up to the school building’s front doors with Vie and Mort walking along together. After taking a few seconds to wave goodbye, Paxton closed the door back up and the cab was off to its next destination. It didn’t take long before North Lumiose Secondary School came into view, and once the cab touched down again it was Taunie’s turn to open the door.

“Seine, Loire!” she addressed the blonde teenagers. “It’s time to get to school now. Have a great day, you two.” Parents hugged children, and children hugged parents as more kisses ensued.

“Goodbye, Mom, Mama and Dad.” said Seine. And then Seine and Loire departed the cab and proceeded towards the school building. The parents watched as they disappeared past the glass doors, before the cab door was closed again and the cab took off for its next destination.

The next building the cab landed in front of was a building with a fancy black façade, green accents on its columns and windows. On the front were the prominent white words “RESTAURAUNT TASTOPOLIS”. Make no mistake - this was Taunie’s workplace. Paxton pulled the door open for his wife.

“Okay curry croissant. Have a good day at work and I hope you get many customers.” The cab’s three remaining occupants hugged and Taunie found herself on the receiving end of the waterfall of kisses.

“Thank you.” Taunie said happily. “I’ll see you in the afternoon.” And with that she took her leave, walking to the restaurant’s front door and flipping its doorsign from “CLOSED” to “OPEN” before entering the building.

That just left two stops remaining. The cab set off for its penultimate destination. The building it stopped at this time was a very familiar two-stored building with a hatched black roof. Paxton knew that once upon a time, this building had been the home of the Rust Syndicate, the shadowy organisation that extorted debts from people. But now the Syndicate was gone, a new generation of Lumiosians growing up not knowing of the fear they struck into residents’ hearts. The massive Rust Syndicate logo that had once adorned the building’s roof was gone. In its place was a new, light blue logo, one depicting a stickman waving ribbons in a heart shape. Next to the logo were the words “ZILLIONS OF MOVES DANCE SCHOOL”.

For the penultimate time this morning the door was opened and Paxton embraced his wife, planting yet more kisses on her face.

“I hope your day at work goes well, Lyrebird, and the kids love your new routine. See you later.”

“And I hope you have a good day at work too!” Lida trilled happily. And off she went with that characteristic bounce in her step. Now Paxton was all alone in the cab. And off it went to its final destination.

And that final destination was a towering skyscraper with a green hexagon molded on the side of the building, a large K contained inside it. The Kalos League’s shiny new headquarters, a building only ten years old. Paxton pulled the door open for the final time this morning and stepped out of the cab, turning back to face the driver.

Merci, Adrien!”

“You’re welcome, Champion Paxton.”

Paxton then closed the door for the last time, and as the now-empty vehicle departed he turned and strode up to the building. Upon reaching the gated door he fished out his wallet, produced his ID card and put it to the scanner on the side of the frame. With a beep the door opened and Paxton strode inside, ready to begin his Champion duties for the day…

Review: A Morning with the Tranmetsewlives

This won't really be as straightforward of a review (maybe it will, maybe it won't; my thoughts can be all over the place sometimes without even realizing), but this had caught my eye and interested me for a little while now, and I didn't want to leave it without saying anything about it, because I love this a lot. Just the concept alone of Team MZ as a poly relationship has already been something I've really enjoyed seeing, but aside from a few bits of fanart here and there, I hadn't really seen much else of it (though I'm sure there's a lot out there); point is, this scratched a serious itch I didn't know I needed.

First and foremost, the thing I wanted to point out most was just how much it's clear that Paxton, Taunie, Lida and Naveen love each other. Even from the first lines of spoken dialogue, you could tell they really do care about each other and how strong their relationship is.

He watched them intently as they went through the same waking motions he did, before their eyes slid open. Paxton was greeted by three pairs of glossy orbs - blue, dull purple, onyx - all studying him intently and lovingly. He took a breath.
This is more of a little thing, but I thought it was cute to have them mirror the way Paxton woke up; it just makes them feel even more connected as a quadrouple (is that the right word? Tried googling it but didn't get much, but i digress, it's just cute)

“Good morning, mes amours.”, he greeted in a soft, warm tone.

“Morning, Paxie.”

“Good morning, Pax-Pax.”

“Morning to you, love.”
“Did everyone have a good sleep? No bad dreams?” he asked.

I don't know how to explain it, but just the way they interact and talk with one another is sosososo adorable and I love it so much <3 The way Paxton calls them his amours, and the little compliment about how gorgeous they look even in the dark, while also having his partners reciprocate with little nicknames for him in return, and enjoy the affection given to them from Paxton in little ways ("This compliment elicited giggles and thanks from his partners.")

The other two watched this display of affection unfold, before Paxton released him and finished by embracing Lida and closing the gap between their lips, a vanilla flavour gracing his mouth.
This hands down has to be my favorite part of the whole thing. The way each of the kisses and embraces feel special and almost tailor-made for each of Paxton's partners (especially through the different flavors on Lida, Naveen and Taunie's lips which was something I really like that you included !!) Another little thing I liked is how while Paxton hugged and kissed one of them, the others would watch with fondness, which I thought was sweet. Just this whole little scene made my heart melt in particular bwehhhh <333 i love them

Lida moaned. “Out of the way, Navi. I REALLY need to pee.”

“Same here.” Taunie replied.

Another thing I noticed is how natural the relationship feels. It's the little things like planning the day or pushing each other out of the way to use the bathroom first that makes it feel like an actual real-life relationship, something I feel like I don't see all too often, so I like that you added it here.

I thought I had more to say about their kids, but the main thing I can say is that you nailed giving them distinct traits, mannerisms, actions, dialogue, etc. that make them stand out from one another in more ways than just their age or what they wear. Overall just a Thumbs Up of Approval (trademark pending) from me.

Also, more of a general thing (and I say this a lot with people I'm realizing), but I like your style of writing! Of course, everyone's style of writing is unique, and I like each of them for different reasons, and yours is no different. I'd have to see some other pieces of writing from you to get a full sense of what I like about it, but this oneshot is a pretty good first impression when it comes to showing off what you can do.

Overall, this was a joy to read. Writing characters in a poly relationship is something I don't see a lot in general (sorta like what I said at the start), and every time I see one in the wild I get a little happy inside. I can't wait to see what else you add to this collection!! Keep up the great work ♡

First and foremost, the thing I wanted to point out most was just how much it's clear that Paxton, Taunie, Lida and Naveen love each other. Even from the first lines of spoken dialogue, you could tell they really do care about each other and how strong their relationship is.

This is more of a little thing, but I thought it was cute to have them mirror the way Paxton woke up; it just makes them feel even more connected as a quadrouple (is that the right word? Tried googling it but didn't get much, but i digress, it's just cute)

Keep up the great work ♡
Aw, thank you so much for the glowing review!

Comforting a Challenger
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Before I begin this chapter, I believe I owe you all an apology. This chapter was meant to release on January 1 as a New Years' present, but a hitch with my beta reader and checking this fanfic with the mods meant it had to be delayed. For that, I am very sorry.

Also, just so you know this is my first time writing an emotional scene like this with LGBTQ+ themes.

Also, I am going to be bumping this collection up to a Teen Rating owing to the subject matter of this chapter.

Comforting a Challenger

If there was one thing Paxton Megania Tranmetsewlive knew about being the Champion of the Kalos region, it’s that the job was… far from easy, to put it lightly. Sure, he enjoyed the fancy outfits, the various luxuries and all of the prestige and fame that came with the title, but the Championship also came with so many responsibilities. Most of his time as Champion he spent making sure the gears of the Kalos League were turning smoothly - wrangling paperwork and other such bureaucracy, making sure the Gym Leaders and Elite Four were fit to maintain their positions, keeping a vigilant eye for threats to the region’s peace and harmony, and other such necessities.

And of course, the one thing above all is that the Champion had to be ready to defend their title from challengers at a moment’s notice. Over the course of his reign as Champion, sixteen years and counting, Paxton had met a vast array of challengers, from all ages and walks of life, who had attempted to usurp his throne for themselves. In their many quests to overthrow him these Trainers unleashed a wide diversity of strategies and seemingly used every Pokémon in the Kalos Dex - and yet, all of these attempted coups had ended in failure.

And this fine afternoon, Paxton found his title under threat yet again. Today’s aspiring claimant to the Championship was a boy from Camphrier Town by the name of Adrien DuMont. And from what Paxton had heard about him he was shaping up to be quite the formidable opponent - he had managed to defeat all eight of the Gym Leaders on his first try. Paxton’s hand-picked Elite Four fared somewhat better, but eventually Adrien’s power and skill overcame them and they were forced to yield. And so, his final line of defence breached, Paxton found himself standing here on the roof of the Kalos League’s headquarters, arms folded, awaiting the arrival of his latest challenger. Several Rotom cameras hovered around him, ready to live-stream the match to all those people who wanted to tune in. Near them was the automated drone that refereed the battles.

I should probably do a last-minute check on myself…” he muttered. He looked down at his uniform, where six-specially painted Poké Balls were clipped onto the holders Naveen had sewn onto his uniform, and examined their paint jobs to see which Pokémon were inside. Talonflame, Dragonite, Meganium, Heracross, Mawile and Malamar. Yes, those were the Pokémon he intended to use for this battle. A quick glance at his left wrist reassured him that he had not forgotten his Mega Ring. And looking inside his bag he saw all of the items the Kalos League had permitted him to use for this match. Yes, he was all ready to go for this match. He returned his gaze to the sliding doors in front of him.

And as if on cue, said sliding doors pulled open, and the Champion was able to get a good look at his opponent. Adrien DuMont looked to be a teenager, with curly brown hair, fair skin and a slim build. His outfit was a simple plain t-shirt and shorts, and slung over his shoulder was a black satchel. A Mega Ring adorned his right wrist. Overall, fairly standard appearance for a Trainer, but Paxton knew that that mundane look concealed skill and capabilities that were nothing to trifle about.

So this is the boy who bested the League… Paxton thought. He kept his gaze on the boy as Adrien walked out of the doors and onto the roof, stopping just in front of him. For a few seconds all was calm and quiet on the roof of the Kalos League. The screens of the Rotom cameras filming the match lit up as the stream went live. Then Paxton drew a breath.

“Welcome, Challenger Adrien.”

“Hello there, Champion Paxton!” Adrien replied with a sense of confidence colouring his voice.

“I must say, you are quite the amazing Trainer to have made it this far.”

“Yeah, I am.”

“There aren’t many Trainers who manage to make it to me. Most of the Trainers who challenge the Kalos League give up at around the third or fourth Gyms. And yet you have demonstrated the tenacity, skill and willpower that defines a Champion. You have gathered all eight of the Gym Badges and defeated my Elite Four. And now your final test awaits - a battle against me, Champion Paxton. Should you defeat me, you will become the Champion of Kalos - the strongest Trainer in the region.”

“Heck yeah I will!” Adrien fist bumped the air, a massive grin on his face. Looking at said grin Paxton had a feeling deep in his gut it looked forced, but he quickly disregarded the thought.

“But…” Paxton dragged the word out for emphasis as he unfolded his arms, “I must warn you that I am utterly incapable of holding back when it comes to Pokémon battles, and I believe that is why no-one has managed to defeat me so far. But you… you might manage something truly wonderful today. Now then, are you ready to battle?”

“You bet!” Adrien said with that enthusiastic tone.

“Then get into position.”

The two Trainers turned their backs to each other and stepped forward until they were in position. They turned back to face each other.

“The battle begins on the count of three.” Paxton declared. Adrien nodded in response.

“3…” Both Trainers got into battling stances.

“2…” Adrien reached into his bag and produced an Ultra Ball, whilst Paxton unclipped his Talonflame’s Poké Ball from its holder.

“1…” Both Trainers cocked their arms back. And then like a rubber band snapping back, both Poké Balls were flying

“Go, Feraligatr!”

“Let’s roll, Talonflame!”

With a mighty crash, a massive cloud of dust kicked up, rapidly engulfing the entire battle court. Paxton quickly turned away to stop it getting into his eyes, before turning back to the cloud. The cloud of dust hung there for a few seconds before it cleared, revealing both combatants’ final Pokémon standing across from each other. Paxton’s Malamar was panting from exhaustion, while Adrien’s Garchomp simply hovered there completely stationary, as though it were suspended in time.

And then with a thump, Garchomp crashed to the floor. Adrien looked on with worry on his face at his final partner. He made a silent prayer to Arceus that the Dragon/Ground-type would get back up. But as the seconds that now felt like eternity ticked by, that prayer went unanswered.

The silence was broken by the robot referee raising its red flag. “Garchomp is unable to battle!” it announced. “Champion Paxton is the winner!”

It took a few seconds for the realisation to hit Adrien, but eventually it did. He had lost. Wordlessly he pulled Garchomp’s ball from his bag and recalled it before filing it away.

“Great work, Malamar!” said Paxton. He reached out and pulled Malamar back into its ball, clipping the ball back into its holder. He turned to look at the face of the challenger whose team he had just vanquished. “And Challenger Adrien, thank you for the battle. I must say, you and your team fought very well, but it appears my skill and power won out in the end.”

Adrien simply stood there in silence. His mouth hung open and his eyes appeared to be staring off into the distance.

“...Challenger Adrien?” said Paxton.

A few more seconds passed without a word from the boy. And then a choke escaped his throat.

“I… I… I lost. I lost. I lost.” More chokes. “All that journeying… all that hard work…” Paxton could see tears beginning to prick in the corners of the boy’s eyes. “Is this what it all came to? I’m such a failure… I gathered all those badges and faced the Champion… only to lose. Why? Why? Whyyyyy???” and then, his face falling into his hands, a wail escaped the boy’s throat as tears dripped onto the smooth floor. As Paxton watched this emotional breakdown he felt his heart breaking a little at the sight. No! He couldn’t let this stellar Trainer begin doubting himself over one defeat! He had to do something!

Paxton quickly turned to the Rotom cameras who were still rolling and waved at them. Quickly understanding what he wanted, they shut the stream off and flew back through the doors. Once he was sure they were in privacy, he turned back to Adrien and approached him. He reached out and placed a hand on Adrien’s shoulder.

“Adrien. Adrien.” The boy looked up and Paxton saw his eyes were red and puffy, his face splotchy with tear stains. “Listen, listen. Look at me. Please.” He took a knee to put himself on eye level with his challenger. He took a breath as he thought about what to say next. “You say you’re such a failure because you failed to defeat me, but I want to make one thing very clear - you are not a failure. Far from it. And you wanna know why?”

“But… but I lost.” said Adrien, his voice somewhat hoarse.

“You may have lost… but you also won. Lemme ask you something - how many Gym Leaders did you have to battle on the way here?”

“Umm… eight?”

“And how many did you defeat?”

“...Eight?”

“Correct. Now my Elite Four. How many of them did you defeat?”

“...Four?”

“Yes. That’s twelve victories under your belt. Twelve! Think about it - this would give you a battle record of twelve victories and one defeat. That doesn't sound so bad, doesn’t it?”

“...I guess when you put it like that, it doesn’t sound so bad…” said Adrien. Paxton noted that the hoarseness in his voice appeared to be fading and his tears had stopped. That was good - he appeared to be making progress in cheering the boy up.

“And you wanna know something else?” Paxton responded. “You managed to knock out five of my Pokémon. Not many challengers gave me a challenge quite like you have. Most of them only knock out around two or three.”

“Wow…” Adrien took a second for this nugget of information to sink in.

“What I’m trying to say is, you are a good Trainer, an amazing one for that matter, and I don’t want you to doubt yourself like that ever again, okay? Champion’s orders.”

“O-okay…” said Adrien. “T-thanks.”

Paxton smiled. This looked like a job well done. But then he noticed that the boy still didn't quite look right. Maybe it was the way he went silent and didn’t say a word after that. Maybe it was the way he was fidgeting with his hands. Maybe it was a different thing… but clearly something else was troubling the challenger.

“You okay?” asked Paxton.

“...Yeah. Just got a lot on my mind, that’s all.” Adrien admitted.

“...Do you wanna talk about it?” Paxton offered. “If there’s something more that’s troubling you and you wanna get it off your chest, I’d be happy to listen to you.”

“Um, I’d rather not trouble you…”

“It isn’t troubling. When I became part of Team MZ long ago, I made a vow that I would look out for everyone, no matter what, and it’s a vow I continue to uphold even to this day. So please, if you’d like to talk, I’m here to listen.”

A few seconds passed whilst Adrien considered the Champion’s offer. Eventually a response left his mouth.

“Okay… but, promise you won’t tell anyone?” Adrien requested.

Paxton held out his hand and extended his pinky finger. “Pinky promise.” Adrien wrapped his pinky around Paxton’s own to signify the promise. It took a few seconds for the conversation to resume, but Adrien spoke first.

“Champion Paxton… can I ask you something?”

“Yeah?”

"If I wanted to like, go out, or kiss, or something, with another guy..." he hesitated for a second, “...does that make me a freak?”

“No, not in the slightest,” said Paxton. “I’m in love with another man myself, you know. What made you think it was bad?”

“Well…” Adrien began, “just before I began my journey, I had fallen in love with my neighbour’s son, and I wrote about it in my diary… but my sister got hold of it and spilled the secret to my parents…” More tears began to prick Adrien’s eyes. “And… my parents didn't react well… they screamed at me and told me it was ‘unnatural’ and that I’d be going to the Distortion World, and in the end I had to run away to escape it.” he sighed before continuing. “I then figured that maybe… if I became Champion I could change their minds.”

Paxton felt tears coming to his own eyes. How? How could this amazing boy’s flesh and blood turn on him for something he couldn’t control? He felt a tinge of anger seep into his thoughts at the homophobic cruelty he had described, but he quickly pushed it aside, for the boy needed comfort.

“Oh, you poor thing.” said Paxton as he wiped the boy's tears away. “Lemme tell you something right now - all of that venom they were spewing about being ‘unnatural’? That is false - all of it. I’ll have you know that having feelings for someone the same gender as you - that is just as natural and normal as having feelings for someone of the opposite gender. Trust me - I have feelings for both! And you wanna know something?”

Adrien simply looked at him, curious.

“I was actually in similar shoes to you once upon a time. When I first realised my feelings for my husband and wives, back when I was on my Pokémon journey, I initially freaked out, because… I had been told by the media and other sources that that kind of relationship was exclusive to abusive cults and such, and I didn’t want to hurt my partners. But then during my first Pokémon World Tournament, I met Galar Champion Gloria and her wife Marnie, and they helped me realise my feelings were just as natural as yours!”

Adrien looked stunned at this revelation. “Wow…” he uttered.

“And did you know that a few Pokémon have exhibited homosexual behaviour in the wild?”

“They do?”

“Yeah! Once on vacation in Paldea I saw two male Quaxly circling each other in a pond and washing each other’s coifs affectionately. It was an adorable display, let me tell you.”

“I imagine it was.”

“Yeah. Now, one last thing - what your sister did was absolutely awful. She had no right to go snooping through your diary and violating your privacy like that, and your family… if they were willing to say those nasty, horrible things to you, they frankly do not deserve you. I think you’re a wonderful person who deserves love and support.”

Adrien began to tear up once more, this time out of happiness and validation. “Th-thank you…”

“No problem.” Paxton then opened his arms. “Would you like a hug?”

“Yes please.” Paxton then pulled Adrien in and wrapped his arms around his challenger’s back, bracing slightly as he felt his challenger melt into his embrace. He rubbed soothing circles over the boy’s back and whispered reassurances in his ear. He was a good person. He deserved love. He deserved support. His feelings were natural.

Eventually Paxton released Adrien and looked the boy in the face. He seemed much happier now. “Are you feeling better?”

“Yeah. Thank you. Although… now that I think about it… I don’t want to go home and have to face them again…”

“You don’t have to.” said Paxton. “I happen to know a place in Lumiose City where you could stay for now with other queer people. It’s called the Rainbow Den. Want me to take you there?”

“Uh… sure.” Adrien replied.

“Okay then. But first, I think you deserve a reward for making it all the way through the League. How about we head to my wife’s restaurant and you can have whatever you want? I’ll pay.”

“Really?” Adrien perked up.

“Of course.”

“Then I’d like that. I’m honestly starving after that battle.”

“Alright, lemme reserve a table for us.”

Paxton pulled out his Rotom Phone, punched in a phone number and held the device to his ear.

“Hey Curry Croissant! I just got done with the battle with my challenger. Don’t worry, I defended my title like always. Then something heavy came up and I had to give them a bit of a pep talk. I think they deserve a reward so I’m gonna take them to the restaurant for a treat. Could I please reserve a table for two?”

“Alright, thanks. Love you, Taun.”

Once he hung up he turned to Adrien. “Alright, let’s go.” Then, taking Adrien’s hand the two made their way towards the sliding doors that led to the elevator. Yes, everything would be alright for him…

The Restaurant Tastopolis House Special New
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Hello everyone! I've decided the time has come to take a big step in my Pokémon fanfiction career - this is my first fic to include a battle scene. If you have any suggestions as to how I could improve future battle scenes, I would love to hear them. With that said...

The Restaurant Tastopolis House Special

“Truly one of the finest eateries to have graced Lumiose City!”

“Every meal was just… amazing. 10/10.”

“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to visit any other restaurant again after coming here.”

Those were just some of the many good reviews to have graced the Internet search page of Restaurant Tastopolis. Even head chef Taunie Hamlet Tranmetsewlive had to admit she was surprised by just how fast the restaurant's popularity had grown - in the span of just nine years, through Taunie’s hard work and determination, good word of mouth and the prestige of having been founded by the Champion’s wife, it had grown from a small newcomer in Lumiose City’s restaurant scene to easily the city’s most popular establishment. That did certainly come with its drawbacks - the restaurant was usually a very busy and hectic place, crammed with more customers than Wishiwashi in a school - and yet Taunie knew in her heart it was all worth it, seeing the customer’s faces light up as they enjoyed their meals and all of the good things said about her and her employees, not to mention the people and charities she got to help with the restaurant’s monthly drive.

Today was business as usual at the restaurant. Having just finished her latest order, Taunie stood by the doors to the kitchen, clad in her white chef’s uniform, and looked out across the building. A chaotic, animated tableau of sounds and sights lay before her. Almost all of the tables were occupied, their occupants a small sampling of the wide diversity of skin tones, body shapes and fashion styles that called Lumiose City home. They were all busy digging into their meals or socialising with their table partners. Her dutiful waiters were flitting between the tables, delivering orders and picking up empty plates with near-robotic efficiency. Other people were playing at the billiards table or the dartboard, or watching the large television hung up in the corner of the building. And displayed on the walls were a series of colourful murals of Kalos landscapes and mythology painted by her husband. As this scene played out before her, she found herself smiling as she admired the sweet fruit of all that labour. If only her mom were still around to see all of this. She would be so proud…

“Excuse me, miss?”

That voice broke Taunie out of her thoughts. She looked up to see a young man striding towards her. He looked to be in early adulthood, with short black hair, medium skin and a blue-and-black smart casual outfit, the straps of a blue backpack slung over his shoulders. She watched him intently as he came to a stop a few feet in front of her.

“Yes, sir?” she replied.

“You’re the head chef, right?” he asked.

“Indeed I am!” she confirmed.

“In that case, I… I wanted to ask about the house special?” He pulled out a copy of the restaurant’s menu, opened it and pointed to the bottom right corner of the document, where there sat a yellow starburst shape with the bold red words “HOUSE SPECIAL! - ASK HEAD CHEF FOR DETAILS” laid prominently across it.

“Ah, yes! The house special!” Taunie began, a smile gracing her face. “Now we have several different house specials that we cycle through between different months. This month’s house special is the Sweet Apple Curry! It’s a dish from the Galar region made with curry roux, rice and a Fancy Apple! They say the sweetness strikes the tongue and heart so profoundly, it leaves you feeling almost numb!” she explained cheerfully. She saw a sense of intrigue appear on the customer’s face, which to her was proof she had done a good job pitching it.

“Ooo…” they began, “That certainly sounds like a delicious dish. Alright, I’ll have it. How much does it cost?”

“Not even a cent!” Taunie responded.

The customer seemed shocked by this statement. “Wait, really?”

“Nope!”

The customer’s shocked look soon gave way to suspicion and they narrowed their eyes. “...There’s a catch, isn’t there?”

Taunie nodded. “Indeed. You do pay… just not with money.”

The customer put their hand to their chin and stroked it in thought. “Maybe I have to do some of the washing up for you?”

Taunie shook her head. “...Nope.”

“...Or perhaps I have to advertise for you on social media?”

Another shake of the head. “Nuh-uh.”

“Uh… I have to help you cook?”

One more shake of the head. “Still no.”

The customer threw up their hands in defeat. “I give up. How do I pay you?”

Taunie half-closed her eyes, a lick of blue ferocity appearing in them. Wordlessly she tapped one of the Poké Balls that was secured to her coat. Once, twice, thrice. And that seemed to make it click in the customer’s mind.

“...You want me to defeat you in a Pokémon battle?”

That was met with a nod. “Bingo. If you defeat me, the house special is your reward.”

“Alright then. Gimme a second to think about it…” Their head lowered slightly and Taunie heard them mutter something about the composition of their party and what Pokémon and strategies to use. Eventually they looked back and stared her dead in the face. “Okay. You’re on.”

“Then let’s head to the battle court.”

Taunie and the customer turned to their right and made their way over to the battle court in the centre of the restaurant building, where the robotic referee was already waiting to officiate the match. Several of the trainers that had been eating turned their heads towards the court in anticipation. Once they arrived at the centre, they turned again to face each other. Taunie took a breath.

“Here are the rules of the battle - we shall use four Pokémon each. You may use any battle items you want, while I may not use battle items. First trainer to defeat all opposing Pokémon wins. Got it?”

“Got it. Ready when you are.” The customer replied.

“Then get into position.”

Taunie and the customer turned their backs to each other and took several steps forward. They then returned to facing each other.

“The battle begins on the count of three.” Taunie announced. She unclipped her Simisage’s Poke Ball from its holder, while the customer reached into their backpack and pulled out a Great Ball.

“3…” Both Trainers got into battling stances.

“2…”

“1…” They wound up. And then simultaneously they threw both Balls forward.

“Go, Simisage!”

“Let’s do this, Hawlucha!”

A pair of flashes signalled both Pokémon emerging onto the field, roaring into the air to signal that they were both ready to fight!

Taunie was first to act. “Simisage, Focus Blast!” The grass monkey rocked back and put its hands together, a light blue ball of energy appeared in between them, and then it sent the ball rocketing in Hawlucha’s direction!

“Dodge, then Swords Dance!”

Thankfully for Hawlucha, it had sufficient distance to get out of the way of the Focus Blast Right before it hit. It raised its wings into the air as a series of orange swords materialised out of the air and circled around it, and Taunie saw that red aura of its Attack being boosted. She knew from experience it was now all that much more dangerous.

“Simisage, Nasty Plot!”

The monkey put its hand to its head in thought before slamming its fist into its open palm, a similar red aura cloaking it.

“Hawlucha, Acrobatics!”

Hawlucha squatted and then leapt into the air, somersaulting.

“Simisage, Energy Ball!”

Simisage put its hands together and a green energy ball formed in between them, before it turned up to the sky and fired said ball up at its airborne foe.

With a crackling SLAM noise, the Energy Ball was a dead hit, sending Hawlucha spiralling backwards into the ground like a shot-down fighter plane. It crashed into the floor with a thump, and everything went still. Simisage crossed its arms, seemingly confident about this turn of events, but then Hawlucha managed to pull itself to its feet, several bruises and scrapes now visible on its body.

“Hawlucha, High Jump Kick!”

Hawlucha rocked back and then threw itself into the air again, its right knee pointed forward and glowing orange. Simisage turned and attempted to dodge, but Hawlucha was faster and its knee slammed into the side of the grass monkey’s head. The force sent Simisage slamming into the floor, Hawlucha tumbling over it and managing to land on its feet. It turned to face its opponent. Several seconds passed, but Simisage remained motionless.

The robot referee raised its green flag. “Simisage is unable to battle!” its computerised voice announced.

Taunie scoffed as she pulled the green Poké Ball from its holder and recalled her fainted simian. “Not bad, but I’m just warming up!” She then replaced the green Poké Ball and pulled a blue one from its holder, lobbing it in Hawlucha’s direction. “Go, Simipour!” The watery monkey emerged from the light, ready to avenge its fallen comrade. “Now, Ice Beam!”

Simipour opened its mouth and with a chilling roar, a laser of light blue energy burst forward from its body. The beam struck Hawlucha square on and a massive cloud of icy mist kicked up as a harsh icy sound rattled everyone’s ears. When it cleared, a massive block of ice stood on the battle court, Hawlucha trapped inside. The customer squinted, and although the ice’s refractiveness made it difficult to spot they could see Hawlucha’s eyes were closed.

The robot referee’s red flag shot up. “Hawlucha is unable to battle!”

The customer pulled out their Great Ball and drew Hawlucha back into it. “You did great Hawlucha. Now then…” they produced a standard Poké Ball and hurled it. “Go, Victreebel!” The huge carnivorous plant roared into the air as the light cleared and Taunie could almost see the poison bubbling inside its body. “Hit ‘em with a Poison Jab!”

Victreebell rocked forward and lashed out with the vine on the back of its head, cloaked in a purple aura. It swung the vine in Simipour’s direction, but the Geyser Pokémon’s superior Speed allowed it to jump over the incoming vine. Victreebel swung back but Simipour managed to duck so that the vine swung right over it. And shortly after that the purple aura on Victreebel’s vine faded out.

“Alright then, Victreebel, Power Whip!”

Victreebell resumed its thrashing, swinging its vine like a baby violently shaking a toy. Simipour managed to keep dodging for a while, but eventually after several attempts Victreebel managed to land a good solid hit on it. The monkey was sent spinning away like a frisbee and crashed into the fence surrounding the battle court, where it then slumped to the ground and went completely still. A few of the restaurant’s guests gasped audibly in shock.

Up went the robot referee’s green flag. “Simipour is unable to battle!”

Taunie took out Simipour’s ball and recalled. It. “Good job, I must say, but I’m far from down yet!” She retrieved her next ball, this one painted red and orange, and threw it. “You’re up, Simisear!” As the fiery monkey screamed a warcry it narrowed its eyes at its opponent.

“Alright Victreebel, Knock Off!” The customer commanded.

“Dodge, then use Fire Blast!” Taunie ordered.

Victreebell brought its vine over its head and attempted to slap the Life Orb it noticed out of Simisear’s hand, but once again the monkey was faster and managed to evade the attack. It dodged out of the way of another slap too, and the one after that, until in quick succession it stooped in front of Victreebel’s face, grabbed its opponent, opened its mouth and unleashed a full-power Fire Blast point-blank into the plant’s body. A scream of pain escaped its throat as the Fire Blast singed its flesh, until eventually the attack petered out. Simisear then released its victim and stepped back, Victreebel having collapsed to the ground. The centre of its body was covered in burn marks - it had obviously been burned… not that that seemed to matter right now.

The robot’s red flag went up again. “Victreebel is unable to battle!”

The customer pulled out the plant’s ball and withdrew it from the field. “You may have bested my Victreebel, but I’ve still got two Pokémon!” An Ultra Ball emerged from their bag next. “Show your mettle, Gardevoir!” As the light cleared to reveal the Psychic-Fairy-type Taunie could see a Choice Scarf tied around its neck.

“Now, show that Simisear the power of Psychic!” Gardevoir crossed its arms as its eyes glowed with a light blue colour and suddenly Simisear found itself being lifted off the ground. The Gardevoir suddenly threw its arms downward and Simisear was rammed into the ground at high speed with a mighty crash. The glow around Gardevoir faded. Simisear soon managed to pick itself back up and pull itself to its feet, but it had not come out unscathed, if its bruises were anything to go by.

“Keep up the Fire Blasts, Simisear!” yelled Taunie, and Simisear let loose with another molten torrent. Gardevoir ducked to avoid this but it ended up barely connecting, Gardevoir stumbling to maintain its footing whilst small flames erupted around it, indicating a successful burn.

“And another Psychic!” commanded the customer. Gardevoir managed to steady itself and let its psychic powers loose again, picking up poor Simisear and throwing it up into the air. The fiery monkey almost grazed the ceiling before gravity kicked in and it plummeted back to the floor, impacting with a crash. Gardevoir watched this, flinching again as its burn flared up and chipped away its HP.

The robot put up its green flag. “Simisear is unable to battle!”

Taunie pulled out Simisear’s ball and recalled. “Alright, you may have defeated three of my four Pokémon, but I’ve saved my secret weapon for last!” She took out the final Poké Ball on her uniform, painted light green with a pink stripe down the centre, and let it fly. “Go, Meganium!” But even as Meganium emerged from the light, Taunie took another breath. “And the secret weapon is the power of Mega Evolution!”

Raising her fist, Taunie pressed on the Keystone on her Mega Ring, and a bright light erupted from it. The ground around Meganium began to glow as it cried into the sky. The light burst forth and enclosed it, and then it burst open to reveal a vastly different Meganium, supercharged with Mega energy! Gardevoir simply stood there with its mouth agape, almost as if it were in shock at seeing Meganium’s transformation.

“Now Meganium! Frenzy Plant!”

Several roots of Grass-type energy burst out of the floor. Gardevoir finally snapped out of its stupor, but before it could even think about running away the roots slammed into it at full power, sending it ragdolling into the outer fence. Another audible gasp from the audience, before the robot raised its red flag.

“Gardevoir is unable to battle!”

“Well then…” said the customer as he recalled the fainted Psychic/Fairy-type, “...it looks like I’m down to my last Pokémon too. And if you’re gonna use Mega Evolution, I may as well fight fire with fire!” A Luxury Ball appeared from his backpack. “I choose you, Raichu! Your Mega Evolution will turn the tide!” As Raichu gave out its cry the customer tapped his Key Stone and Rauchu was consumed in light. When its light cocoon burst, Taunie and Meganium were greeted with the sight of Mega Raichu X, electricity sparking from its cheeks.

“Now, let’s end this! Thunderbolt!”

Heeding its trainer’s cue, Raichu launched into the air, cloaked itself in electric power and began zipping in all directions around the battle court, Meganium looking around frantically as it tried to keep track of where its enemy was… right before the ball of electricity suddenly appeared in front of it and slammed into its chest, knocking it backwards. Raichu landed on its feet in front of the downed Grass-type, but initial thoughts of victory were soon disabused as Meganium pulled itself back up.

“A Focus Blast ought to finish this!”

Raichu charged a ball of yellow energy and launched at the dazed Meganium.

“Dodge, then use Giga Drain!” Taunie ordered. But Meganium did not move - instead a series of yellow sparks danced around it. The Focus Blast closed in on Meganium until it impacted with a dance of light and sound. Meganium let out a pained cry as it buckled under the impact. Then, it was consumed again in an orb of light, and when it cleared the Meganium had reverted to normal, before it crumpled to the ground unconscious. A few seconds of total silence passed.

And then the silence was broken by the robot referee’s green flag. “Meganium is unable to battle! The customer wins!”

The customer closed his eyes and pumped his fist in the air as Raichu returned to normal. “Yes, we did it! We won! We scored the house special! Oh yeah!” When he opened his eyes again he saw that Taunie had recalled her Meganium and had walked over to him.

“Thank you for the battle. Lemme just say - you are a pretty good trainer. Are you competing in the Infinite Z-A Royale, by any chance?”

“Yeah! I just started three weeks ago, but I’ve already defeated quite a few people! Now as much as I’d like to talk about that, I’m quite hungry.”

“Oh yeah! Follow me to the counter.”

The customer recalled his Raichu and followed Taunie as she made her way over to the front counter and took a number post from it, handing it to him.

“Congratulations - as you have defeated me today’s house special, the Sweet Apple Curry, is your reward. Go ahead and take a seat - I will get started on your meal right away. It should be ready within about… uh… thirty minutes.”

“Can’t wait.”

Taunie then spun around, pushed open the swinging doors behind her and stepped into the kitchen, ready to begin preparing the customer’s reward…

AUTHOR'S NOTE: These one-shots are naturally going to vary in length quite a bit. Normally they will be at least 2,000 words long, but this one is a little short, clocking in at 1,782. Anyways, with that said, we've seen Paxton and Taunie's starter chapters so far. Here's Naveen's!

CONTENT WARNINGS: None.

The Latest Masterpiece
It was 4 o’clock on a fine Saturday afternoon. The sun shone through the blinds, making the room inside pop with colour. The songs of the local Flying-type Pokémon filtered through the window. At the four corners of the room there stood at each a station with equipment set up - one station had a green screen hanging down from the ceiling with a tripod stand sitting nearby, another had a set of paints and an easel, and a third sported a computer setup. This was clearly an artists’ studio - and a very elaborate one at that, capable of supporting every type of visual art under the sun. But clearly it had to be a studio used by several artists, right? After all, many artists typically specialised in only one field of visual art.

But many artists weren’t Naveen Feltan Tranmetsewlive. Right now the dark-skinned man was seated at his sewing desk, clad in his white sewing outfit, watching his latest masterpiece take form right before his eyes. On the piece of fabric sitting on his sewing desk there sprawled the threaded forms of several people - four adults, two teenagers, three children - in a variety of heights and skin tones. They were either embracing each other, striking poses or carrying items that related to them - one of the adult men had a paintbrush, an adult woman was showing a peace sign towards the canvas, and the three smallest children each held something too - a racing helmet, a minigolf putter and a clipboard. Their clothes popped with colour, their eyes shone bright and their smiles completed the scene. Naveen all thought these people looked adorable.

Well… that was easy to say when the people in question were your own family.

This embroidered family portrait of the Tranmetsewlives was a project that had been three weeks in the making, and Naveen had needed to jump through a lot of hoops to make it happen - designing the embroidery pattern, obtaining the necessary fabric and material, preparing his equipment… and not to mention all of the stitching. So much stitching. But Naveen was a very dedicated man and he had spared no expenses. His family deserved the best, and so only the finest quality thread and fabric, and the utmost care and precision, had gone into this celebration of the people he loved. Plus, he had stitched the entire piece by hand. Sure, he could have used his trusty sewing machine to cut down on the work, but Naveen knew that a machine-switched piece had nowhere near as much heart and soul put into it as a hand-stitched piece.

And now the Tranmetsewlives’ visual artist was about to reap the sweet fruit of his hard work. The only part of the pattern that was left to complete was the black border enclosing it all. Humming one of Lida’s tunes, he pulled the needle through the fabric until the black thread was taut with the fabric, then pushed the needle into a fabric a bit further down to complete another backstitch. He continued this rhythmic motion as the black line advanced across the guideline he had laid out towards the corner of the piece. With each backstitch it drew closer and closer, until finally contact was made. With the border complete Naveen drew the needle through the fabric for the final time, then unclipped the tension frame and folded the fabric over to access the back and used his embroidery scissors to cut the thread. Setting the needle and remaining thread aside, he tied a knot in the black thread and unfolded the fabric.

He drew a sigh of satisfaction. “Finally… after three long weeks, one of my biggest embroidery pieces yet is done.” he said to himself. “I’m just gonna take a breather and then I’ll look this over.” And so that was what he did. Turning around, Naveen got up from his seat, pulled the door open and departed his studio. For ten minutes the studio was quiet, barely a trace of motion. But then the door opened and Naveen returned. Reclaiming his seat, he began looking over the piece, his eyes scanning the embroidery for any frayed threads, misplaced colours, or other such defects. He searched and scouted. He double, triple, quadruple checked. But eventually after about fifteen minutes of looking the piece over, he could confidently say that this beautiful embroidery had passed his rigorous quality control standards with flying colours, and now it was ready for prime time. He rolled it up and proceeded out of his art studio.

A few seconds of navigating the hallways eventually brought Naveen to the living room, where some of the other members of the family were already gathered. Paxton was curled up on the couch, his nose buried in the latest Bellatrix of Alola novel. On the other couch there sat Naissa and Mort, watching cartoons on the television. Paxton looked up and smiled upon seeing his husband enter the living room, getting up from the couch and walking up to him.

“Hey, Navi.” Paxton planted a kiss on his husband’s cheek.

“Hey, Papa!” said Naissa and Mort from the couch.

Paxton’s attention was then drawn to the white roll that lay in Naveen’s hand. “Navi, what’s that you’re holding?” he questioned.

Naveen smiled in response. “Why, it’s something very special. It’s been in production for quite a while now and I can’t wait to show it off to you all. Could you gather the rest of the family here for me, please?”

Paxton nodded. “Of course. Naissa, could you go and fetch Seine and Loire from their bedroom?”

Naissa pouted. “But the good bit’s about to start!” she complained, pointing to the television.

Paxton sighed and walked over to Naissa, grabbing the television remote and pausing the cartoon. “Naissa, I know you want to see what happens next, but Papa really would like you to see what he’s made, okay?”

Naissa hesitated before responding. “...Okay.” Then she got up from the couch and ran into the hallway that led to Seine and Loire’s bedroom.

Paxton then turned to Mort. “Mort, could you please go get your Mama?” Nodding his head, the body calmly walked into the same corridor his sister ran into.

“...And I’ll go get Taunie and Vie.” Paxton then strode towards the glass door that led to the outside courtyard, pulled it open and exited the house. A few seconds passed before Paxton returned with his wife and daughter following him.

“So you said you had something to show us?” Taunie asked.

“Indeed.” Naveen replied.

Then Mort reemerged from the hallway with his Mama trailing behind him, that unmistakable happy bounce in her step.

“So what have you got to show us?” Lida questioned.

“It’s a surprise.” Naveen responded.

And then finally Naissa ran back into the living room, Seine and Loire entering shortly afterwards.

“Hey, Papa!” Seine greeted.

Once all of the family were in position, Naveen took a breath and began to speak.

“Everyone, I want to show off my latest masterpiece. This is easily my biggest and most ambitious embroidery project so far. I wanted this piece to be yet another expression of how much I love you all, and I used only the best quality materials and techniques for it. And I hope you will derive as much pleasure from seeing it as I did making it. With that… I present…”

He held the roll of fabric in front of him and unrolled it to reveal his newest piece. “...a 297 by 420 millimetre hand-crafted embroidery! Now if you look closely, you might even recognise the people on it!”

The rest of the family’s faces all lit up in amazement as they laid eyes on Naveen’s largest embroidery piece yet for the first time. A few seconds of silence passed before Paxton found his words.

“...Wow, Navi. Just… wow. How long did it take you to make this?” he pondered.

“About three weeks of toiling and who knows how many times I accidentally stabbed my thumb.” Naveen answered.

“This…” Lida began. “...this… you really made a family photo in embroidery form!”

“And I’d say those three weeks were well spent!” exclaimed Taunie. “This looks amazing!”

“I see you gave everyone our trademark outfits…” noted Seine, “and some of us have our favourite items in hand!”

“There’s me!” said Vie happily as she pointed to her sewn counterpart on the fabric, the grip of a grass green putter in their threaded hand. “And I’ve got my favourite putter!”

“You’ve got your helmet!” exclaimed Mort as he pointed to the part of the embroidery where Naissa stood, her arm wrapped around her trusty Rhyhorn racing helmet.

“And you’ve got your clipboard!” replied Naissa as she pointed to the clipboard being gripped in Mort’s gloved hand.

“Everyone looks so smiley and happy!” said Lida.

“Agreed!” said Loire.

And as the praise piled on, Naveen felt his heart swell at seeing the cumulation of three weeks of hard work being received so positively. Of course, he was always happy at seeing people praise his artwork, but hearing such good words from his own family filled him with a warm happy fuzziness so amazing there weren't words to describe it. After several minutes’ worth of gushing, Naveen saw his husband look up into his purple eyes.

“Our Navi, we have always loved you for your talent in using colour, shape and form to bring out people’s wonder and amazement, and this piece is no exception. You have managed to flawlessly capture the love and happiness that forms the foundation of the Tranmetsewlive family. This is definitely going on the wall, and I happen to know the perfect place for it. You wanna know where it is?”

“Where?” Naveen questioned.

“We shall put it right next to the master bedroom door, across from the front door, so when our friends come to visit this display of the strength of our love is one of the first things they will see.”

“Aww… I am honoured to have it in such a prestigious position.”

“And you should be. Come on, let’s go hang this up.”

And a few minutes later, the Tranmetsewlive family stood by the door to the master bedroom, Naveen’s embroidered portrait now hanging proudly on the wall just to the right of the frame.

“Now that that’s all done…” said Paxton as he opened his arms. “...how about a family group hug?”

Naveen wrapped his arms around his husband and soon their wives and children joined in too. And as they embraced, the embroidered people watched on, their smiles a physical symbol of the love that the Tranmetsewlives had worked so hard to achieve.
