Brief question: Is it realistic to expect a command allowing us to embed YouTube videos in posts being added in the foreseeable future?

On my guild's websites we have the option of putting putting the address of a video between and having it be playable in the post. Something like this:

Except a video appears exactly the same way you see it embedded in most websites that feature a video from youtube.

Cheers for reading!

One of the forums I'm an admin at (which shall remain unnamed) has this feature as well, and it's a FREE forum, so I honestly don't see why Bulbagarden with its spiffy new VBulletin upgrade can't have this feature as well. I do see the obvious pitfall, however- I know since PPN's incident with the FBI, the BMGF staff has been rather cautious involving copyrights, and I can understand where the posting of Pokemon clips, etc may be problematic. In which case the admins may have no desire to constantly police the boards, and therefore leave the feature off rather than bother with that risk.

But whatever. I say we could use it.

Theoretically YouTube is liable for their content--we can't get in trouble for linking to it.

This is certainly an interesting proposition. I think we'd have to review implementation--namely, where this has real utility--but it's definitely now under consideration.

I think it's obvious enough. Threads about favorite YT series/videos (coughYGOTAScough) can easily have embedded video in them instead of forcing the user to click through links, Pokemon clips can be posted as reference (since YouTube IS theoretically liable for their content, as you said, evkl)- which could kill a lot of flamewars REALLY fast- threads about upcoming movies/games can have trailers embedded in them (here is an excellent example of that application in practice), and perhaps we could open a Battle Theater forum for those ambitious enough to record their battles in Pokemon games to post on. I can't see why this would be anything other than a good thing for Bulbagarden, myself. And with the introduction of the blogs, it only makes sense- I'd love to embed some of my favorite Pokemon MADs in my BulbaJournal.

I hardly need to post here, Neku covered most of what I wanted to say. Big thank you for presenting so many good arguments here.

On the legal issue to the best of my knowledge the ball is in youtube's court concerning the aspect of plagiarism and they cannot touch you for that in any way (one of the reasons Viacom is trying to sue their asses).

I personally think it would be useful on so many levels: from user made guides, movie trailers, game trailers, vlogs by users and many many more variations that I have not even thought of yet. It would clearly enrich the awesome new function of bulbajournals by unprecedented amounts. As Neku stated tons and tons of small boards with maybe a dozen or half a dozen members are already using this possibility, so I wondered to myself why this has not seen execution here on these forums. Thus I decided to throw it out here and see if there was any reception by the staff on the issue. I hope you can discuss this soon and keep us informed on this possible addition.

Obviously it has some utility--I'm not a noob--but at the same time, I wouldn't want Bulbagarden to become a Pokemon-themed wing of youtube, which is my primary concern. Song you're listening to? LINK IT! Upcoming ep? LINK IT! Random pictures of AshxMisty? LINK IT! And so on. I don't want it to become a crutch which takes away from the overall livelihood of the forums.

I'm a member of a The Price is Right forum where this feature is used. It has a section dedicated only for clips from YouTube, and useage of the tag elsewhere is strictly regulated.

Nando's idea sounds good.

We could call it BulbaVideo or something like that. Just one forum for video posting and disable it everywhere else.

Didn't mean to imply that you're noob or thick or anything of the sort, sorry if that impression was given. Was just throwing some ideas around and so on.

On the idea of limiting the usage: I was actually considering regulation in some shape or form when I started the topic. I was thinking either you limit the whole thing to a certain area of the forum like Nando has suggested or somehow users have the ability to post youtube content, but they can lose it if they abuse it. The latter option sounds very mod intensive and I can't think of any way that you could easily lessen the burden, because you would have to monitor every user to make sure they haven't been abusing it and so on. Thus I second the dedicated area suggestion.

Something tells me that what with the recent paranoia about Nintendo/Pokemon shutting down sites, this idea's been shelved for a while.

That's what I, for the life of me, honestly cannot understand or comprehend, as I stated earlier nothing can touch bulbagarden because of embedded youtube videos in the posts.
Even if it were to break existing copyright law it CANNOT harm this website, it's owners or the affiliated websites in any way. So if this is the actual reason for not opening up this opportunity to our community, then I sincerely hope you re-think this decision because it is based on false premises. I guarantee that this site will not be receiving letters because of a command that embeds youtube videos.

Whoa, whoa, Lingx2, I never said it WAS why, just a hypothetical.

Either that or the staff here simply can't be bothered to do such a thing.

No, no I understand that it was simply a theory as to why and ´that it was hypothetical. I was simply pointing out that if it were the case then it is a completely foolish assumption because youtube is liable for the content, that's all.
Sorry if it appeared that I was actually responding to your remark as if it were the reason for this not happening. My mistake for not clarifying that I was attempting to debunk a mythe before it was even considered as a reason.

My personal opinion is that there currently isn't the manpower, resources or the time to effeciently implement this. The constant down time would back up this theory. Or maybe there simply isn't any interest or will to undetake this change. We can only speculate.

THe youtube tags on the forum I sue only use this part: v=5cpSv2mNhhc

Can't it be enabled for the blogs atleast?
