For infinitely blocked users with approved/appropriate usernames, is it possible to delete the global account but still have the IP blocked? If yes, then maybe, if someone created an account with an originally blocked name, we monitor their first five edits. If they're benign, we keep them, if not, block them. So... Tell me what you think!

I get what you are saying. Deviant art kind of does the same thing.

On Deviantart, when one has already created an account, the IP address is saved. You can't make another account on the same internet access point. But you can on another IP that is "virgin" to Deviantart.

Same idea but with blocking people, right? So if one gets blocked, the S/N is up for grabs, but the IP is blocked so no new accounts on that access point can be made. But if they go to another access point and create the same account, you watch and look for similarities in posts. Correct?

But, as I've said, the username is NOT for grabs. You can't delete it...unless you want to risk a namechange.

Actually you can. In fact Myspace, Gaia online, and Deviantart let users have the ability to delete their own accounts which means it is possible for the mods to delete a blocked user's name and give it up for grabs.

You could just change the user names to a number, so that the admins can keep up with them, instead of deleting the account.

The problem with deleting accounts is that attribution to contributions is lost. Also, if we renamed someone with the name of a previously used account, or someone registered with the name of a previously used account, this will reflect badly on both users.

In short, it will stuff up the server. :D

OBJECTION. This is MediaWiki, not any of those sites. You can't just delete a user. Also, judging from how many blocked people we have, the number idea won't work either.

Additional OBJECTION! Gaia Online doesn't allow users to delete their accounts, and administrators there won't delete them either. Try to know the websites you're going to make claims about.

Thank you.

Also worth noting, IP addresses are occasionally shared across multiple people, which accounts generally are not. That's why you generally shouldn't ever perma-ban an IP vandal, since the same IP address could eventually become a totally different, non-vandal user, while a username can't be expected to ever change hands. If you deleted a user's account and blocked their IP instead, you'd risk blocking other good-faith users in the process.

And yes, with direct access to the server, it IS possible to delete user accounts, but the side effects are missing data in place of the user's contributions, as well as other such things. It's generally not done for that very reason.

True that, I share an IP adress with my two brothers, Link6491 and Mr. Vader on Bulbapedia. IP adress should be a last resort, and only if the person wont stop vanadalzing, and it would be stupid for someone to pass down an account

You forgot Oakleaf-knight.

*headdesk* No, it's not one of those sites but EVERYTHING can be deleted. If the original creator of this entire forum wanted to, he/she can and COULD DELETE everyone including the site it's self. Everything is possible with the internet which is why random hackers can hijack your entire computer if they wanted to and mess everything up and block you from your own PC/Laptop.

It's all about knowing HOW. Just because you don't know how to do something does NOT mean you cannot do it.

We have backups for that sort of thing. The site is secure.

IP bans are usualy only for repeat offenders, if one of your siblings vandalises the wiki on numerous occasions, you should take it up with them and inform a mod. Without IP bans, a lot of annoying an persisant people would never leave.

Kuki, you should be grateful you didn't get blocked here. You were only blocked for 6 months, but when it was by His Majesty Archaic, I don't think any subordinate adminstrators are going to unblock you. Maybe you should go find fulfillment elsewhere.
