Possible upcoming game names discovered: Topaz, Amethyst, Whitegold among unused trademarks

The All About Pokemon Figure (AAPF) blog posted today the unused names of Pokémon games that are trademarked by Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures with the Industrial Property Digital Library (IPDL). All of the names were registered in May and June 2003, and it is likely that the new game announced in CoroCoro's June issue will have one of these titles.

Yer about 5 and a half years late on this...Serebii.net covered it in October 2002 lol

Moonstone? Will it have Clefairy on the cover? X)

I like the first two names, whitegold would be weird, and I'm indifferent to tourmaline.

Ironically, Opal ain't one of them.

The difference is, now it's actually relevant.

See, I can end every final sentence without a period too

They were also relevant 3 years ago and came to nothing.

These are merely names that Nintendo trademarked after the Diamond and Jade fiasco to protect itself from further attempts of the same. There is no confirmation of these names ever actually being used.

We were over this when they were first discovered, do we really have to do it all over again now just 'cos someone found the list again?

Cool, I didn't know Serebii was on these forums!
Your site is a great resource.

And about the names, I would pick something Amethyst or Topaz to be the 3rd game in the DP set (If there's even going to be one...)

I'm wondering what kind of magic you used for that since the trademarks weren't filed until mid-2003.

And look, I didn't remember back that far that they had been known. AAPF posted them like they were something new. Give me a fucking break, it's not like it's something fake. I don't have time to go digging back into the archives of everything every time something breaks to double check that it hasn't been said already years ago.

DILLIGAT?

Anyway...there is simply a possibility of these names being used.

Personally I think a few of those names sound like ones that people would use for fakes, so Nintendo simply used them to prevent any more fakes.

I could be wrong, of course.

The real point of contention isn't that the news is old (though it is), it's more this here:

it is likely that the new game announced in CoroCoro's June issue will have one of these titles.

'Cos it's just not true. It's a possibility, yes, since Nintendo legally owns the names, but they've owned them for years with the sole purpose of protecting them for themselves should they ever wish to use them and to give them a legal standing should anyone else try to sell a game with that name.

There's a reason they were all trademarked around the same time and just after the Diamond and Jade fiasco had blown up a shitstorm on eBay.

It shouldn't be taken that we should just be sitting around waiting for the release of Pokemon Topaz, Pokemon Amethyst, Pokemon Whitegold etc as if they're sure things. 'Cos in most cases it's actually really rather unlikely...

There's another list of similar names floating around from about a year prior to Diamond and Pearl's announcement too - where I believe Pearl was among the games registered there (I think this list currently being discussed actually had Diamond on it too, probably as well as Jade). One of those is probably more likely (considering it would have been put down with Pearl and GameFreak would have been pretty set on what to call the third game by that time anyway), but it's still no confirmation that every name trademarked will be used.

Normally, most companies would only trademark the names they're actually going to use or obvious ones that require protecting (Like Mario + Sport), but following Diamond and Jade, Pokemon got some pretty heavy handed treatment to try and prevent further problems, which means reporting on trademarked names is pretty worthless overall...

Yes, if anyone would recall, there's a bunch of unused names for future Harry Potter books and after they were discovered, NONE of them were the actual names of any of the titles. As Doc said, NONE of the names copyrighted already will probably be the title of the new one.

The problem is that DP and Emerald were copyrighted around that same time. So if none of those games are used, well, when are they copyrighting the real ones?

I know this isn't likely....

But personally, I'd love it if the 3rd installment of D/P would be called Topaz. That happens to be my birthstone! ^_^

This is what I want to know, if one of these names is not going to be the name of the new game. The article never says that all those names will be used, only that it seems likely one will given there don't seem to be any other unused names.

I cannot speak for that...but I was not the only person to report regarding them back then

Amythest would be a poor choice for a name.

Mainly because many kids wouldn't be able to pronounce it. >_>
