Possible way to get both Huntail and Gorebyss in Emerald?

I'm trying to complete my Emerald Pokedex and the whole Huntail/Gorebyss thing is pissing me off because I'm gonna have to find a way to get another game. So I was thinking, what if I exploited the cloning glitch? Do you think it would work? Let me explain what I want to do.

1) Put a Clamperl in a PC Box.
2) Save game.
3) Withdraw Clamperl.
4) Go change in my Scanner for either of the DeepSea items.
5) Make Clamperl hold it.
6) Go back to Battle Tower and continue with the cloning glitch as usual.
7) Turn GBA back on, Clamperl in my party has the deepsea item, Clamperl in the PC has nothing, and I can still trade in the Scanner for the other Deepsea item.

Would that work?

Yes, but how would you duplicate the Scanner? Unless you can switch the item to the other item with Capt. Stern, I don't see how it would work.

I mean, you won't have the Scanner because you'll have given it to Stern.
