I haven’t being a fan (or watch this series) of this franchise since I got fed up with it during the early Turbo episodes, but I found out about this the other day and wanted to share this with everyone, because it’s still big and (to me) surprising news, but after 17 years Power Rangers have been canceled. The current season, Power Rangers: RPM will be the final season. Disney who has owned the rights to the franchise since buying it for Saban in the early part of this decade decided to end the series.

I included two links where you can read about it below.

Source# 1: New Zealand Herald.

Source# 2: New York Post.

I guess that means there won’t be any Power Rangers version of the current Super Sentai season: Samurai Sentai Shinkenger or of any future season of Super Sentai.

R.I.P Power Rangers (1993-2009)

Important Update: I'm including this update to avoid confusion because according to Bandai there will be a Power Ranger season of Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. At the time I posted though the "official word" seemed to be that Power Rangers was canceled and now Bandai says it's not. I also changed the title of this thread to avoid anymore confusion.

Well I never really watched it since I was about 7-8 and I was honestly surprised it lasted this long. Well, like everything it else it comes to an end. R.I.P power rangers

Re: Power Rangers Has Been Canceled

I'm a little surprised by this. I honestly thought that the show was still doing fairly well. I'd really like to know why Disney decided to pull the plug.

Re: Power Rangers Has Been Canceled

I don't know about you, but I'm saying "It's about flipping time." They've been repeating the same ideas for years now. Not since Time Force have they really had a unique idea, and after Disney got hold of it, it was so grating that I don't see how come it has lasted as long as it has other than kids can't get enough of this stuff. I stopped watching at Wild Force, at which I myself had gotten tired of watching the same plot be done over and over. It was cool back when Space started giving us a continuity instead of just random battles. They never stopped doing the plot in that style since then, though. There were some cool ideas, but they were few and far between (mostly the evil Ranger or Ranger-like person that joins them later) I was willing to let it live simply for the fact that the kids keep piling on this junk, but really, this series is old and tired.

The series may have gotten old and tired, but it continued as long as it has because there was always new fans to replace the old ones and the main point was to sell toys of the new Rangers, Zords, and villains every year.

Which is why it lasted as long as it did. It's also the reason why I was surprised that Disney decided to finally cancel it, but according to the second link which has the New York Post article it mentions that most ABC stations drop the show in 2006 because it wasn't an E/I program.

Because of that the show had low ratings and that means that the parents groups won out in the end once again.

Re: Power Rangers Has Been Canceled

I guess that means they'll have to get their violence from primetime like everyone else. [/sarcasm]

Re: Power Rangers Has Been Canceled

I'm a little stunned, but I'm not surprised by this especially with the PR production budget shrinking yearly since Disney took over. Being on an exclusive cable network didn't help improve ratings either.

Even late in the series, it was apparent that the show was in decline. By comparison, Mighty Morphin PR had 3 consecutive seasons with 145 episodes ~ 50 per season, PR in Space had 43 episodes in it's run. The last three Disney Produced seasons only had 32 episodes to show for. Also, the production has been in New Zealand since Disney took over in order to cut costs even more due to being cheaper to produce there.
So no surprise.

It certainly had a good run, and it will be bittersweet to see it go, at least I think so. I've been with American PR since the beginning and I'm not surprised by the comments here and am not surprised where people dropped out. I thought Wild Force was awful, and just too drawn out. While there were indeed some bad seasons, there were a few hidden gems, and not every Disney season was bad. I think SPD and Jungle Fury (towards the end) were especially well done [Sticking closer to the original Sentai plots and consistently improving on fighting choreography.] I was watching for nostalgia and for pure enjoyment, despite corny dialogue at times, but at least part of the crew knew how to throw in a bit of fan service for the older crowd (which surprised me that they were even aware of their older fans.)

I can say they will be missed, and at least they die out quietly since it faded from presence long ago. In my mind, Jungle Fury was not a bad season to go out on and would be pleased to stop there. I'm not even going to bother with RPM since I didn't hear many good things about it's Sentai counterpart anyway.

RIP Power Rangers

oh well
i never really watched it anyway

Re: Power Rangers Has Been Canceled

Another casualty in the soccer moms' neverending crusade to protect kids from violence... I should have known it was to come.

*sighs*

You know, just about every poster in this thread grew up with "violent" Saturday morning stuff like this, and we're not the psychopathic killers they claimed we'd be.

They probably visited websites like Fanfiction.net. I mean I was blown away when I first visited that website and saw how many devoted older fans around my age that continued to watch Power Rangers and write about it and posted it on-line. Until then, I thought there weren’t any older Power Rangers fans.

Yeah good point, Nekusagi. I loved watching the old 90’s Saturday morning cartoons (and still do. Thank you DVD), even though the parents groups hated them.

And finally. . .

what the heck is a soccer mom?

Disney originally didn't want PR to continue past WF. They only got the rights because Saban made them buy it. Disney wanted the ABC Family channel badly. The main reason why it wasn't canned at the end of JF was because Europe had already begun promoting the toys. Disney was forced to do another one. Then the new exec. that took over, wanted the show to actually be good again. He goes over budget, Disney fires him and cancels the show completely.

Ain't that the truth. According to the child psychologists, I was going to get into fights at school, abuse my pets and possibly shoot someone because of my TV viewing habits. Apparently, watching He-Man, She-Ra, GI Joe and Transformers was going to completely warp my poor little innocent mind. :banghead:
OMFG! That is hilarious! In the back of my mind I can hear Helen Lovejoy wailing hysterically, "What about the children?! Won't somebody please think of the children!?"

So long story short-- Disney sucks. Why am I not surprised about that at all?

Re-Boot, Spider-Man, BtAS, Power Rangers, Big Bad Beetleborgs, and Batman/Superman Adventures never made me hit my friends.

I demand my money back.

Re: Power Rangers Has Been Canceled

I thought Power Rangers was rubbish anyway. Does anyone actually like Power Rangers at the moment? I saw one episode and thought it was bad straight away. And in one series it had a talking hamster. If you want a proper talking hamster, watch the english version of creature comforts.

Re: Power Rangers Has Been Canceled

I used to watch the show when I was little, but grew out of it. I stopped watching regularly during Zeo, then stopped watching altogether during lost galaxy. The most recent episode I actually saw was from the season where Tommy from the original was back as a professor, or the one with all the red rangers, whichever was more recent (or maybe that episode was from that season, I forget).

Anyway it is kind of sad to see one of my old favorite shows finally die, but its time was coming.

Re: Power Rangers Has Been Canceled

I used to watch it when I was little but stopped some time in second or maybe third grade. It never was one of my favourites but still I watched it because it was OK. But actualy I knew that I couldn`t expect more from a live-action kid`s show. I remember watching some eps that I even don`t know from which season when I was 4 or 5 and in 2nd grade I started watching Ninja Storm (I think that was the title) and continued with Wild Force and Dino Rangers.Yesterday I even came across some of the eps from one of the lasts seasons-Operation overdrive. Nothing new sadly. But there were good seasons, too.
