Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology
Previously written and published in Japanese, the full-color Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology book is receiving an English-language edition scheduled to be released on April 21st, 2026. The book contains a “new perspective” on Pokémon, exploring their characteristics, lifestyles, and environments, based on information in the Pokédex. Preorders are open now at major book retailers in the US and Canada.

The English edition of Pokécology contains 208 pages of color illustrations and descriptions of Pokémon ecology, originally written in Japanese by Yoshinari Yonehara, a PhD from the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and an expert in animal behavior and ecology. Yonehara is credited as a coordinator on Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon: Scarlet & Violet, and Pokémon Sleep. Chihiro Kinoshita, another PhD from the University of Tokyo and expert on behavioral ecology, is the illustrator of Pokécology, having previously worked on a variety of scientific animal books for young readers. The book is being translated to English and published by The Pokémon Company International’s publishing imprint Pikachu Press, under Simon and Schuster.

The Pokémon Company described Yonehara being inspired by Pokémon Sun & Moon’s introduction of regional forms, and by the concept of the Pokédex as a means of cataloging information. Systematically gathering Pokédex information from all the mainline games, from Pokémon Red & Green to the most recent at the time, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, took Yonehara about 2 years. The organization and illustration process went smoothly as described by Yonehara and Kinoshita, as both experts were able to communicate and express the specific details of a real-world animal’s ecology compared to a Pokémon’s. For example, Kinoshita illustrated Pikipek pressing its tail against the tree it’s pecking at, a behavior of real-world woodpeckers, without the detail needing to be specified in text by Yonehara.

Bookseller Blurb:
Take Your First Look Into The Lives of Pokémon! This book and its vivid illustrations introduce you to the ecologies of Pokémon based on data from the Pokédex. Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology focuses on the similarities, differences, generalities, and relationships between Pokémon ecologies. The results of those observations and analyses are presented alongside spectacular artwork. The author and illustrator—both of whom hold doctorate degrees and have studied animal behavior and ecology—explain “Pokécology” from a brand-new perspective.

Pokécology is designed to pique young readers' interest in ecology, including a section called “Wondrous Discovery,” which features a short guide on how to study a Pokémon, and then pages with space for readers to write down their observations. According to The Pokémon Company, “[Yonehara], shunning difficult, specialized terminology... set to compiling a work in which the reader would come to recognize the specific traits of Pokémon with each turn of the page.”

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, will retail for $14.99 USD / $19.99 CAN. Click on the images below for a more detailed preview.
