Well, Attorney General Menachem Mazuz is only considering it at the moment, but it's 99% certain that president Moshe Katsav will be accused of raping a woman who worked under him. He will be charged for the sexual harassment of three other woman who worked under him, too... as well as breach of trust, obstruction of justice, harassment of a witness and fraud.

Lovely, right?

What's even lovelier is his lengthy speech (50 minutes) from yesterday. It was spectacular, I must say. He claimed that he is perfectly innocent and basically attacked the media, the police and Mr. Mazuz and accused them of orchestrating a witch hunt against him. The best part, as far as I'm concerned, was the part where he claimed that the media never let him give his version. The head reporter of Israel's Channel 2, Gadi Sukenik, tried to say that the media gave the president plenty of chances to speak, after which Katsav verbally attacked him and one of the bodyguards present tried to take Sukenik's microphone away. Then Katsav was all 'Channel 2 was letting my blood for the past six months!'. It was all very amusing. (I should get my mom to ask Sukenik about this incident sometime. They're acquaintances.)

And I'm saying it was amusing because between the possible charges (both relating to fraud, IIRC) against Prime Minister Olmert and Finance Minister Hirschson, the failure of Defense Minister Peretz to do anything right in the recent war, the resignation of the IDF's Chief of the General Staff Dan Halutz following said failure and the general incompetence of Israel's politicians... all I can do is laugh.

I feel bad for not knowing this, but you have both a president AND a prime minister? What's the difference?

The Prime Minister of Israel is the elected head of the government, the one that makes important decisions. The President of Israel is just a figurehead and does very little except sit on his ass and approve things that were already decided by other authorities. And, well, he can pardon criminals sometimes. It's a ceremonial and rather useless role that wastes millions of Shekels a year. Kind of like constitutional monarchies.

Hmm, a president involved in a sex scandal and denying it, that sounds familiar...

So he's like our Queen, except he's not a famous brand? That's rubbish. At least our Royal Family generate more money through tourism etc. than they sap from the tax payer. Your president should be charged with raping your whole country, not just a few women.

Please cite a source that says that the awful "Royals" generate more than they spend.

Japan is also a constitutional monarchy. You know, the whole emperor thing.

Just thought I'd point that out for everyone.

Ok, you're right that i shouldn't have posted something as fact, when i have no proof. But it's a moot point because it would be impossible to calculate how much they Royal Family actually generate through tourism etc. I suspect it is a lot of money or i wouldn't have posted it.

What i would say is that London has a huge tourist market, mainly because of it's history, and that the Royal Family is probably the most important part of that history.
