I guess this goes here....

For some reason, my Shift keys won't work for some buttons, and I have no idea why. When I say they won't work, I mean that if I hold Shift then hit a particular key, nothing is typed. It just started happening, but I have no idea what key(s) or combination I hit to make it do this.

StickyKeys and FilterKeys are off; it doesn't matter if the num and caps locks are on or off; I've tried restarting the computer; with the language bar, the keyboard is set to English (U.S.); alt codes work fine, as do ctrl shortcuts; they don't work in Notepad or Microsoft Word, either; if it matters, I'm using Opera on Windows XP.

Does anybody know what's going on?

Buttons that don't work:
Left Shift: q w e r t y k l ; '
Right Shift: ' ; l k \ = - 0 9 8 7

It's probably just that your keyboard is sick of you using the Shift Key.

Probably best to get a new one.

Unless someone out ther eknows a way to fix this. >_>

If you do have a second keyboard (or a USB keyboard if on a Laptop) it probably would be good to test it (to see if it is just a problem with the keyboard). Otherwise, my guess could be the keyboard could be dirty, or somebody who used your computer could have downloaded some kind of Malware/Virus.

To tell you the truth though, the fact that the shift key works sometimes does make me think it's more of a software problem. I'd do some kind of Spyware and Virus scan, and then consider what programs you might have installed recently. (As far as I know... there may not have been an update to windows lately. Though, also consider reinstalling the drivers, usually the companies let you dl them from their site)

Sweet! They work again! Thanks. :DDD

I ran a full system scan, but that didn't do anything concerning the keyboard (that I know of), then I just went and got a driver (or patch?). I also pressed the little moon button in the upper left corner, but that just made the computer ask me if I really wanted to put the computer is standby mode.

That's what I thought. Since the Shift keys stopped other keys from working at all during the time they were held down, I figured it couldn't be something wrong with the keyboard per se.

Perhaps the keyboard may have been defective just like you thought.

I find the rows you described as not working in an interesting location because perhaps the metallic strip that runs beneath them may have been severed somewhere. (or perhaps been disturbed by say a liquid spill). You could try and see, but that may just end up ruining the keyboard more so I wouldn't attempt it.

Well if it works now, good!
What can you do? Shift happens :p

You're like my brother and dad, who are always making puns and jokes....

Anyway....

I wouldn't know about any metallic strip, but unless someone else either used this computer while I was asleep/watching TV and accidently spilled something or maliciously and purposely spilled something, then it couldn't have been liquid.

Other than my dad when he doesn't want to wait for his own computer to turn on, I'm the only one who uses this computer. We're not actually supposed to eat or drink in the computer area (

), so it definitely wouldn't have been my dad (who set the rules), and my brother warns me once before he tells our dad (hypocrite...). That leaves me, and I've never spilled anything here (well, not on any computer part, just on the floor).

But like I said, I thought it was a software problem.

I won't say, but you always did have a knack for picking apart what people were trying to say.
Solution: Yes, I did XD. I just didn't want it to seem like random spam.

I guess if no tampering had been done, then it was a software glitch. You're using the same defective keyboard from before, right?

I am.

Though I wonder what caused it and why it messed with just those particular keys....
