Hi guys, sorry if i tend to clog the blogs section with my posts, but i've decided to start a new challenge to mindlessly grind away at while i watch movies and netflix and such. This'll be a multi-game Professor Oak's challenge, involving all of gens 3, 4 and 5. For those unfamiliar with this challenge, the idea is to register as many pokemon as possible in your dex before facing each gym. It's a lot of grinding and it takes a long time, so it's ideal for when you need something to do with your hands while your mind is doing other stuff.

My rules will be as follows:
  1. I must fill as much of he dex as possible in a game section before i may move on to the next game section
  2. Game sections include the start of the game to the first gym, each section between gyms/pokemon league, and the postgame
  3. After finishing up a section, i must then continue with the section that will give me the most new pokemon. In cases where that number is equal, i may choose which game to continue.
  4. Gym leaders with no pokemon locked behind them do not count as their own section and may be beaten whenever. This includes if a gym leader would have mons locked behind them, but those mons have already been obtained in a different game.
  5. I have only one copy of each game, and i may not reset the save files. Trading/transfering between games is allowed.
  6. Once a pokemon has been obtained in one game, it counts as obtained in all games and i don't have to catch it again
  7. I will only make use of the Day Care for breeding. The pokemon must be immediately retrieved once they have produced their egg.
  8. Munchlax clause: Since there is no way to guarantee that any particular honey tree will house Munchlax, i will pretend he cannot be obtained from honey trees
  9. Safari Zone clause: because of how much waiting is involved in the Johto Safari Zone, i will only catch the pokemon that are available there from the start and i will not bother with the block system
  10. Seasons clause: If a pokemon is only obtainable during a certain season, and that season does not occur while i am doing the other things for that section, i may move on to the next section, though i have to immediately return once the pokemon is in season in order to get it.
There's a grand total of 649 pokemon in the first 5 generations; remove the mythicals and you're left with 636. Decent chance i won't see this through to the end, but we'll see.

Good Luck!
Regarding Sinnoh, I would recommend playing BDSP for that, since most of the Pokemon can be captured pretty easily. The alternative is Platinum.
Regarding Unova, BW2 is the better pair, especially since you can get many more Pokemon, though BW is pretty good for exclusive Unova.

Best Wishes to your success.

Let's have a look at what section we'll start with:

Ruby Pre-Roxanne: 37 mons available
Sapphire Pre-Roxanne: 37
Emerald Pre-Roxanne: 39
FR Pre-Brock: 19
LG Pre-Brock: 19
Diamond Pre-Roark: 29
Pearl Pre-Roark: 29
Platinum Pre-Roark: 31
HG Pre-Falkner: 41
SS Pre-Falkner: 43
Black Pre-Striaton: 11
White Pre-Striaton: 11
Black 2 Pre-Cheren: 29
White 2 Pre-Cheren: 29

Looks like we're starting with Soul Silver. We pick a random name; this character is called Britney. We head to professor Elm's lab to get our first pokemon, a Chikorita.

1/636 obtained, 42 more in this section.

I head off on the professor's quest, battling every wild pokemon on the way. On the way back, i battle a young man with a Cyndaquil; he apparently stole it from Elm's lab. Lying to the cops is illegal, so i tell them his name is ???. I then get some pokeballs, and head out to catch a Hoothoot.

2/636 obtained, 41 more in this section.

I head on my way to Violet City battling all trainers along the way, but not registering any pokegear numbers. I also catch myself a Rattata.

3/636 obtained, 40 more in this section.

I proceed to Violet, head into Sprout Tower and catch a Gastly.

4/636 obtained, 39 more in this section.

At the pokemon center, i inform Primo that HONEY GATHER USELESS STATIC BOY. As thanks for informing him of this, he gives me an egg. We then head south and catch an Ekans.

5/636 obtained, 38 more in this section.

We then catch Wooper.

6/636 obtained, 37 more in this section.

And Mareep.

7/636 obtained, 36 more in this section.

I then head into Dark Cave and catch a Geodude

8/636 obtained, 35 more in this section.

And Zubat.

9/636 obtained, 34 more in this section.

We'll now take Zubat onto the team; his happiness is important for later. We head west of Violet and pick up HM06 Rock Smash, then we head south and catch a Bellsprout.

10/636 obtained, 33 more in this section.

We catch another Bellsprout, head back to Violet and trade it for an Onix.

11/636 obtained, 32 more in this section.

Next, we head back into Dark Cave, grind a bit, and find Dunsparce surprisingly quickly.

12/636 obtained, 31 more in this section.

BDSP will not be part of this challenge as they're not in gens 3-5. for gen 5, i need to get both Black and White to the postgame to get the genies, but i need to play BW2 to get Zorua and Zoroark.

Now in the daytime, it's time for some more catches. On Route 31, we catch Weedle

14/636 obtained, 29 more in this section.

And Pidgey.

15/636 obtained, 28 more in this section.

We then head back to Route 29 and catch Sentret.

16/636 obtained, 27 more in this section.

We then head north to Route 46 and catch Spearow.

17/636 obtained, 26 more in this section.

Next, we once again head south of Violet to catch Hoppip.

18/636 obtained, 25 more in this section.

I beat up all the sages in Sprout Tower, which causes Chikorita to evolve into Bayleef.

19/636 obtained, 24 more in this section.

I also beat up the trainers in Falkner's gym, but not Falkner himself obvs. Now it's time to head for the spot where we will be doing our grinding. We head to the Ruins of Alph, complete a puzzle and catch Unown.

20/636 obtained, 23 more in this section.

A bit later, Primo's egg hatches; we now have a Slugma.

21/636 obtained, 22 more in this section.

Sentret has evolved into Furret, and will now be spending the rest of his days in the box.

25/636 obtained, 18 more in this section.

Ledyba has evolved into Ledian, and i'll never have to use this pokemon again.

28/636 obtained, 15 more in this section.

Hoothoot has also evolved, into Noctowl.

29/636 obtained, 14 more in this section.

And Hoppip has become Skiploom.

30/636 obtained, 13 more in this section.
