Yes, we have quite a few of those. Most are protected due to possible speculatory information, some due to the fact that they're high-visibility (Main Page anyone?), and others because... they're templates we use far too often to have some jerk vandal screw them over or a user who thinks a change would be good to edit them without discussion and end up breaking them somehow for an unknown reason. Also cascade of updates = BAD.

Anyway, here we'll have a thread dedicated to the discussion of said protected articles, and what to add to them. So if anyone has any suggestions... there ya go.

I personally say that Arceus's page should at least mention the fan speculation of its Movie 12 appearance up until it appears.

TTE, I'm on a rampage against speculation and this is how you repay me?

I'm disappointed.

Anyway, do we have any evidence that, you know, template wars would occur if we unprotected them?

I have a suggestion about the Rotom article. The bit in it's origin section that says Rotom resembles a Chao. That really needs to be removed.

Don't get angry at him, the thread was my suggestion. Not saying there would be any unprotections happening, but certainly getting some discussion about them onto the forums instead of on the talk pages, so we can draw on knowledgeable forum users who might not normally visit 'pedia.

I was kidding about the trivia stuff....Kinda. :p

Although I do mean what I say when I ask "what if we unprotected (most) templates?" Obviously unprotecting the main page and all that is a bad idea, and maybe certain templates ({{stub}), for instance)--but the majority, I think, may actually be improved by being open.

I could be wrong. Just sayin'.

most templates should indeed stay protected i say. not only due to the reason we shouldnt have to edit some, but, if a vandal gets to one, thats X pages now effected. but, thats a given.

meanwhile, i say adding one line about possible Arceus isnt a bad idea, as long as we insist its speculation.

and finally, why is Rotom still protected?

I always insist that it's speculation. Hey, we've got a mainspace page on GSDS. It's because that's the belief of 99.9% of the fandom (the other 0.1% being the kids who won't know about Arceus until it's revealed next year).

But how often do templates have to be edited? Most of the time, they are created and that is that, if there is no longer a need to edit them, we might as well not give the option to edit them other than the thirty or so people who have that ability. They are a possible vandal hot spot, one that can be avoided.

At the same time, there are good users who know how to edit templates well and have discussed their changes with the admins who can't. LTs can be protected, obviously, as well as some of the more highly-used infoboxes, but what about something like the templates for certain character's Pokémon, templates that may only show up on one or two articles? I've heard about how the new server is able to handle more of a load than the old one, so as long as any bad edits were reverted quickly enough, templates not in too high usage wouldn't be that big a deal.

Mostly I just protect the super-used templates and infoboxes. My god did you know we actually didn't have the P template protected? Thanks to MysteryHeff?'s addition to the $1 page I really jumped on the protection bandwagon... plus, hey, when you have a template like P used on more than 5000 pages in more than three places per page... eck.

I mainly just have it so that such templates are protected only when they're in danger of speculation edits by new users who do only that.

So as long as we have this thread, here's a question: the Dragon trio page was protected a long time ago, and apparently will be until March. Isn't that a bit excessive, considering Platinum's already out in Japan and we know pretty much everything we're going to know?
