My phat PS2 started having problems reading discs. It plays PS1 games and CDs, but it won't play DVDs and PS2 games. :bawl:
Is there any way to fix it? I want to play my PS2 games again. :-(

Which model is it? Slim or Phat? And what's the model number? I know the SCPH-3000x models are faulty all the time.

It sounds like a laser issue. I had issues like that while fixing a old SCPH-39001 phat PS2, where it would play blue discs and PSX games but not DVDs.

If it's old, you might be better off selling your old one at GameStop and getting a new SCPH-90001 slim model.

Mine is SCPH-50001. I hope there's a cheap and easy way to fixing it. :(

Oh. If you want to fix it there is the laser adjustment guide. It works, and is easier then a new laser, but disassembly is required, and if you dislodge a cable, then you need to disassemble and reassemble the PS2. And PS2 phats are very complex, so you should be very careful not to dislodge a cable.

do you lay it flat? stand it on it's side (seriously that worked for mine)

other than that you can also contact sony - they fixed mine for £50 about 6 years after i bought it - can't argue with that!

I have this with some games, not all, and they are un-scratched discs.

Mine reads the blue discs fine, its the DVD PS2 games that's having the problem. Mine discs have no scratches on them, so I doubt it's games. Laying on it's side didn't help either. Oh well I'll try adjusting the laser and see if that helps. :(

I did the laser adjustment on my old SCPH 39001 PS2 once, and it fixed the issue. I ended up buying a blue disc (HL1) to help test it, but it was worth it.

Great. Now my PS2 is giving me the same problem again. :( Guess it's time to get a new one. What models do you recommend? The newest one, the SCPH-90001 is a little too high for me.

Slim: Try a used 90001 or 79001. These are the most recent models of PS2. They also have built in network adapters, like all slims, so you can play online, and the 90001 doesn't need a power brick.

I personally have a SCPH 90001 and it's awesome. I like the fact it doesn't need a power brick like the SCPH 7xxxx slims. It also loads the games veryyyyy fast compared to the phat models.

You can tell which model it is by the number, if you can't look, this is what a 90001 looks like:

Note the distinctive 2 tone shape at the top, and the lack of vents on the front. The SCPH 7xxxx series has a strip in the middle, splitting the 2 pieces, along with phat style vents on the front.

Phat: I would stay away from any phat models, unless you play FFXI. All of them seem to have more reading issues then the slims, and disassembly is required to fix them. But the most recent model is the 50001.

Sorry for not replying earlier. I broke down and got a slim PS2. Works like a champ. Thanks everyone for the help. :)
