Late last May, good hax0rz security researchers discovered that a lot of home internet routers have been getting infected by malware, which allowed bad guys to spy on your Internet traffic--including on websites that you'd expect to be secure because you access them with HTTPS.
It works similar to a virus on your PC, in that the software on your router gets infected and it allows the evil hax0rz to creep on you, and hack your internet-connected devices. It is estimated that about 1 million devices got infected so far.
(This is a very oversimplified way to put it. If you are into technical details, check out the original research here and this news article here.)
It is advised that you run this test to check if your router already got infected: VPN Filter checker - Symantec Corp.
You should also check if your particular router model has a firmware update available from the manufacturer's website. You can think of it as of a OS upgrade for the router, to patch security weaknesses, which could help prevent it getting infected by something like VPNFilter in the future.
