PRESS RELEASE: Nintendo Unleash A Puppy Phenomenon Nintendogs Becomes A European Smash
Press release supplied by Games Press 11:34 12/10/2005

October 12th 2005 - With sales of over 160,000 units in its first weekend of availability in Europe, NintendogsTM is shaping up to replicate the incredible success enjoyed in the US and Japan. In the US, Nintendogs became not only the hottest-selling video game, but the best-selling new franchise ever for a portable video game system, while in Japan it has become a truly cultural phenomenon.

"Nintendogs is clearly helping sell new Nintendo DS hardware. Aligned with a price drop to £89.99, Nintendo DS sales are up between 400-700% across Europe, this will further cement our position as leader in the portable market," commented Nintendo Senior Director of Marketing, Jim Merrick.

Nintendogs lets owners train and care for lifelike puppies using the Nintendo DS system's touch screen and microphone. Nintendogs has gone on to sell over 1.5 million copies in North America and Japan - having sold out in its first week of release in the USA with over 250,000 copies flying off the shelves during the first week on sale.

Nintendogs launched across Europe on 7th October 2005 at the estimated retail price of around £29.99. The Nintendo DS: Blue and Pink Nintendogs Bundles also launched on October 7th 2005 at the estimated retail price of just £99.99.

I think that it's pretty pathetic to see such huge interest in such a crappy game concept. "Whatever sells is good," huh? Reminds me of shitty games like GTA and whatnot. Same thing, just on the opposite side of the spectrum. :p

I resent that hugely.

I got Nintendogs last Friday on release and am very happy with it.

Even more than that is that my mother LOVES it. She's very much the non-gamer that Nintendo targets with this.

She's not the only one either - as indicated by those figures.

And it should also be noted that Nintendogs was a surprise hit. It was made as a way to show off what the DS can do effectively but the Japanese fell in love with it. Then the Americans did and now we have. It's not as if Nintendo went out and said right at the start "This is the best game ever, buy it or die". Shonen Jump Superstars got more publicity in Japan than Nintendogs ever got at launch.

As I've said, the huge number of interested people does nothing but make the whole thing seem more pathetic. As for it being a "surprise hit," I'm pretty sure that the same could be said for most new franchises that got popular. But oh well...every person has something pointless and/or stupid that they do from time to time. Some people choose to play stupid games. If that makes them happy, then it's all good. :p

I highly doubt you've even played the game in order to pass judgement on it. Personally, i'd see that as a very ignorant stance to take if you can dismiss a game and everyone that buys and enjoys it just because you don't 'get it'.

Nintendo doesn't always go for conventional. You only need to look at the Revolution controller to see that. This game is not what people who bought a DS in May were waiting for. That's the reason for the big boost in DS sales. (Along with some decent marketing to get the new colours with Nintendogs at the same price that the original DS alone cost.)

This isn't entirely original either. Some years ago, I had a game called Dogz, which was a pet simulator. This is just that, but on the DS with Nintendo charm.

I had both Dogz and Cats but the 2d cartoony effect vs the more realistic Nintendogs certainly kept Nintendogs a winnar for me.

There's a version of Dogz coming out for the GBA, by the way, to cash in on Nintendogs' success.

Nintendog's isn't that good in my opinion, luckily i got it free with my blue DS, it's pretty stupid not for it to have a goal, the voice MIC is also a stupid addition, i mean, what if you have a cold? Or you buy it when you're 11-12 and your voice suddenly break's? That's why i find it stupid, i honestly think people will look like loony's sat on the bus or something saying thing's like: 'Sit' or 'Lie down'. I think game's like Mario Kart DS or Metroid Prime: Hunter's will rocket the sale's up futher that what Nintendog's did.

I have to disagree. While this game isn't my cup of tea, I can certainly see how popular it is among people who are currently *non-gamers*, and it's by appealing to the non-gamers that Nintendo will cause sales to soar, not by appealing to gamers. There's a lot more of them than there are of us.

And a game doesn't have to have a goal to be successful. Just look at "The Sims".

So, basically you're saying, it'll help Nintendo get Non-Gamer's to buy it? I guess it's a decent game to put on a handheld, game's like 'Nintendogs' won't be right on a Non-Portable. I even read Nintendo are in development of 'Nintencat's'.

I even read Nintendo are in development of 'Nintencat's'.

They better damn well be. I hate dogs.

Does this mean we're going to be getting a plain, labrador as a character in Smash Bros 3?

I doubt it somehow. Wario never featured in SSB:M. Although I certainly see Nintendogs trophies.

Maybe even a Nintendogs stage. o.o

Also, Typhloshion - it might be a good idea to take note that you do not put an apostrophe in EVERY word with the letter 's' in it.

When was the Micro released in Europe? Those stats were for October, and I'm fairly sure Europe only got it this month.

It was released November 4th. 10 days ago.
