I just saw a message on my forum by Yuko (you may know her on YouTube as YukoEXE). This is what she had to say about a problem with PUSA:

Yuko: Yep. They removed all of my videos from YT. I only have 21 left. Now isn't that just dandy? And no, I won't be putting them back up. .__.;

Matkin22: Now why would they do that?

Yuko: I dunno. Pokemon USA Inc has been going around and reporting anything Pokemon related. And my videos weren't even theirs because they had the old voices. They even deleted my Japanese Pokemon episodes. I mean, the heck, the Japanese ones belong to TV Tokyo.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Has anyone else had this problem from PUSA on sites such as YouTube?

I've seen other series having episodes pulled, not just Pokemon. Family Guy rarely gets to stay up there more than a day before they take it down.

For the record, PUSA are well within their rights to request the removal of those. Old voices or new voices, Japanese or English or some other language, PUSA is either a representative of the owner (Pokemon Company in Japan for the Japanese episodes), or the actual owner of the license (All dubbed editions, including the old English version). I'm slightly surprised that they'd remove the Japanese episodes, but then, being distributed on an American site like YouTube, I guess it was coming eventually.

Fan distribution of things like that really shouldn't be done over such public mass distribution sites. That's just asking for it to be taken down. Keep it small, and in no way possibily allowing for infringement on their profits, and they'll generally let you go, unless you go and screw something up.

It just doesn't make sense to me. People can't download the videos off of YouTube. Whats the difference between watching on the computer and watching on the TV?

PUSA has been particularly militant in doing this, though. I remember a similar occurrance happened right after they came in. They erased every single Japanese episode there (including my beloved Anabel episodes, which I guess are gone again :'(

EDIT: I understand what you're saying, Archaic, but as far as I know YouTube doesn't make any profits from its user-created content, nor do the users themselves. Is there something I'm missing here?

It's still illegal, and PUSA can remove them if they choose...

Let's hope they dont break down on torrents though...lol

Oh, noone's arguing that PUSA doesn't have the right to want them taken down. What people, or at least in my case, are wondering is why. What harm becomes them if people watch the episodes on the internet? I doubt many households that participate in the Neilsen ratings system also watch a lot of stuff on YouTube, so they're still making the money.

Basically, when you watch it on TV, you're paying for the right to see it. (Either you pay with your cable TV bill, or you pay by allowing the advertisments to be broadcast to you). When you're watching it on YouTube, you're not. (Neilsen ratings have nothing to do with how much they earn, not directly in any case)

So it's not a matter of that the people distributing it aren't making money off this. It's a matter of PUSA isn't making any money off this. And it's also a matter of them defending their IP. If they don't, then legally, they'd no longer own it, and it'd go into the public domain. They have to do this sort of thing on a regular basis so that they can still say they own it.

That makes sense. I would think, though, wouldn't the fact that the show's still on the air be enough for them to say they still own it?

I can only speak for what I know. I still pay the same cable bill whether I watch Pokémon or not.

EDIT: Maybe there's a middle ground that can be staked in all this. Perhaps, just perhaps, if someone were to act as a mediator between YouTube and the production companies, something could be worked out---maybe like a paid subscription service to get exclusive videos posted directly from the companies, with the companies themselves making a cut of the cash, therefore turning a profit. Wishful thinking....

I've noticed alot of companies breaking down as well, so its not just PUSA.

I'm confused about this. O.O

And I'm not talking about YouTube here. But, does this mean that all the dubbed Pokemon episodes airing on Cartoon Network right now, with the original VAs, are actually property of Pokemon USA even though they were dubbed by 4Kids?

I don't really know anything about licenses or rights or anything, so I'm just confused by what you said there, Archaic.

Yeah, that's true.

However, Archaic mentioned something up there, with Pokemon USA even owning rights (or the license?) to the episodes done with the original VAs?

But, surely that wouldn't mean that Pokemon USA thinks they own the original VAs themselves or anything......

Maybe from the episodes on CN, I guess that basically means they get some kinda profits from the episodes dubbed by 4Kids with the original VAs (besides whatever they get from the 8th movie, of course).

No, they just own the episodes now.

That's why they are releasing lots of old episods on DVD for us fans, so we won't go to Youtube *points to Anniversary Set and Indigo Box Set*

Oh, okay.

I think I got a bit worried there when I read that. ^^o

And yeah, I'm looking forward to getting some of those cool DVDs sometime (hopefully). ^_^

Youtube is quite possibly the worst way to watch any TV show anyway. The quality is shit and you have to watch it in 10 minute parts.

If the show is one of the few worth watching, just watch it on TV. Or buy the DVDs.

Or get the torrents of high quality rips.

I can't see why anyone would possibly want to choose Youtube over any of those options.

I never watch full epsiodes on Youtube anyway...

Just YGO Abridged and Expansion Videos.
