I got the idea that the six most types consist of:

Psychic
Dark
Ghost
Water
Flying
Dragon

Did I get it incorrectly?

It really depends on the team, but I would imagine that all teams have a least one water type, seeing as its the most abundant type.

Water is definately the most common type used, because they can learn a lot of useful moves and are fairly abundant. After that, I'd say Normal and Psychic tie for the same reasons.

You really don't see as many Dragons as you would think, because Ice moves are so popular. Same reason for Flying-types. And Ghost and Dark are pretty rare, too - a lot of people simply teach Ghost and Dark-type moves to their Normals to avoid the weakness of those two types.

No, Ice-type Pokemon themselves aren't common. Just Ice-type moves.

I don't know about the other threem most popular types since I don't PvP that much.

It honestly depends on the team. In competitive battling, you only think about your types when trying to cover your weaknesses.

Salamence however, is very common.

As far as ADV goes, the most common Pokémon used are:

Smogon's Tier List said:
Aerodactyl
Blaziken
Blissey
Celebi
Claydol
Donphan
Dragonite
Dugtrio
Dusclops
Flygon
Gengar
Gyarados
Heracross
Jirachi
Jolteon
Ludicolo
Magneton
Medicham
Metagross
Milotic
Raikou
Regice
Salamence
Sceptile
Skarmory
Slaking
Snorlax
Starmie
Suicune
Swampert
Tyranitar
Umbreon
Vaporeon
Weezing
Zapdos

According to that list, types are used as follows:

Flying - 6 Pokémon
Water - 6 Pokémon

Steel - 5 Pokémon
Ground - 5 Pokémon
Psychic - 5 Pokémon

Normal - 3 Pokémon
Grass - 3 Pokémon
Poison - 3 Pokémon
Electric - 3 Pokémon

Rock - 2 Pokémon
Dragon - 2 Pokémon
Dark - 2 Pokémon
Ghost - 2 Pokémon
Fighting - 2 Pokémon

Fire - 1 Pokémon
Bug - 1 Pokémon
Ice - 1 Pokémon

So the most common types on a team are Flying, Water, Steel, Ground, Psychic, and Normal. Pokémon

Well, I usually try and get a Grass-type, an Electric-type, a Water-type, a Fire-type, a Normal-type and a Flying-type...hence my first party in Pokémon Red consisting of Venusaur, Pikachu, Gyarados, Flareon, Snorlax and Aerodactyl.

I'd probably say Flying-type is the most common because it becomes useful once the HM for Fly is found.

From what I have seen when fighting other world people it'd be

Fire
Water
Dragon
Electric
Psychic
Dark
Ground
Steel
Poisen
Normal
Bug
Fighting

Not the best answer, but for normal gameplay (i.e running around and taking on dungeons and stuff):

Flying - Fly
Electric - beat down all those water-types when you're Surfing
Ground - Rock Smash, Cut, Strength, Rock Climb
Water - Surf, Waterfall, Whirlpool
Psychic - beat down all those Zubats and random Fighting-types
Rock - I've come to realize I always have a Rock-type on me. Not for any specific purpose, it's just...there.

For Gym Battles, Elite Four, etc:
Fire - starter
Rock - Golem or Tyranitar
Water - defensive bonus and Ice-type moves
Electric - sweeper, usually, but can also jump in to take down random pokemon
Psychic - same as above
Fighting - when I need brawn

This is simply my preference, though

In a playthrough team?

I would say:
Water
Flying
Fire
Grass/Electric
Normal
Other type

For instance, my Platinum team was a Togekiss, Infernape, Golduck, Leafeon, Porygon-Z, and Weavile.
