Ok, here's a question. You know how in every one of its Pokedex entries as well as the Anime, Gloom having a terrible stench is mentioned (heck, that was a prime focus of Pokemon Scent-Sation)? Well why does it not have Stench as one of its possible abilities? To a lessor extent, the same with Caterpie, many of its Pokedex entries mention it can project a nasty stench, and yet it cannot have the ability. Every other Pokemon (to my knowledge) that has mention of a bad smell in its Pokedex has Stench as one of its abilities, so why not these two? Just something I'm curious about.

Well the anime and games have no real connection. The 2 evo lines that have Stench (Muk&Skuntank), you can tell by looking at them that they stink. When I look at gloom I just see something with a flower on its head, and Caterpie's sprite gives no indication that it smells funny.

This. Remember that the games don't equal the anime.

-_- you really are serious about this aren't you?

Pokédex entries should not be trusted much when trying to look for oddities because they're odd themselves. Many Pokédex entries, for example, give out details of the habitat and natural behavior of Pokémon that never appear in the wild.

And, as said above, anime is far away from the games.

Not serious serious, its just something that made me curious.

The only thing that really makes me curious is that ALL of Gloom's pokedex entries mention it, Caterpie was just simular in the respect its mentioned in Pokedex entries and not in the abilities. I'm just curious as to why they didn't think to give Gloom that ability since its always been in the Pokedex for it.

Maybe because stench is a completely useless ability and they wanted to give vileplume and bellossom some chance in the metagame ?

So since Vileplume and Bellosom would be worthless Gloom can't have the ability? Because I think I have seen some other pokemon that changes its ability when it evolves.....

Competitively yes!
In-game..yes and no.

Chlorophyll is a VERY good ability for grass-type Pokemon. When used properly in a competitive battle it's very effective.
Now the ONLY reason you would need Gloom with Stench in-game is to avoid using items such as Repel, otherwise I see that ability completely useless to Gloom, Oddish, Vileplume and Bellosom respectively.

Does it really matter? A fair few Pokédex entries mention things the Pokémon can't use.

Read how many of the Magnemite line's Pokedex entries mention levitating. Using the word levitate. Then notice that none of them have Levitate as an ability.

True but they finally got Magnet Rise, which allows them that ability. The reason for the question is Gloom's smell isn't just mentioned in one of the entries, its brought up in ALL of them.

There are slot of inconsistencies between Pokedex entries and reality. For example, all of Skarmory's entries in D/P/Pt say that it can fly at speeds over 180 mph, it only has a base Speed stat of 70.

Yeah, that is a good point. I think its probably for the reason mentioned before, Gloom really wouldn't be as effective with Stench as its ability. Muk and Skuntank are pretty good battlers, at least if trained effectively, so it doesn't particularally matter they've got that ability, so they're easier to saddle with that ability.

This sums up the whole book I could write on the topic.

In case history has taught you nothing, I don't think there is a pokemon that doesn't exist in the wild somewhere. I never thought I'd see a wild eevee but gen four threw me off on that one.
