If I battle someone over Wi-Fi who has a legendary Pokemon I haven't previously seen, will I be able to seek it at the Global Trade Station?

Not at all.

Pokémon encountered in link battles and the battle tower/battle frontier battles never get recorded in the Pokédex.

So, that means that the only available methods of obtaining them is either through the PAL Park or by trading wirelessly. Right?

Pretty much.

You could try trading with someone for the Pokédex info and then try to look for it on GTS.

You mean, trade wirelessly with someone for the info? Or could I do that through wi-fi?

Both I think.
You just link up (or add someones friend code), trade your Pokemon with their legendary, and back again. I think that secures the information in your dex.

Trade and trade back? Then there wouldn't be any point in seeking it at the GTS.

Anyway, I tried out the GTS in my copy of Pearl, sought Articuno (which I had in my National Dex after migrating one from FireRed), and came across someone who requested Celebi for one. Celebi is an event-only Pokemon that was distributed in very few places. If it was hacked, then why would that person bother requesting one? If not, then how would he have been able to request that Pokemon?

Yes, trade then trade back. This will get register the pokemon in your info and will allow for you to request it in the GTS (you can't request pokemon you haven't at least seen). Are you looking for the pokedex data or to actually own the pokemon?

Just a few thoughts off the top of my head... Maybe it is hacked. Maybe they want one that's a different level. Maybe they want one with a different nature. Though only they will know the real reason.

Okay, I just had a look at what Friend Codes are all about. I do understand that in order to trade with them, whoever's Codes I add to my Pal Pad also has to register mine in their Pad. But, if I understand you correctly, I can go to any PokeCenter, trade through wi-fi there, and ask for anything I want then. Right?

No. The WiFi Club in the basement of the PokeCenters is only for trading (and other things) with people in your Pal Pad.

If you want to "ask for anything you want," you have to go to the Global Trade Station (GTS) located inside the Global Terminal in Jubilife City. You also can't really "ask for anything you want." You can request any pokemon that is registered in your Pokedex, meaning you have to have encountered/seen in the game it at least once.

This is why people have suggested trading for pokedex info. Someone may not want to give up their Darkrai, but are willing to trade to give you the information. Then you will be able to search for one on the GTS and trade for it on your own.

Maybe this excerpt from the Bulbapedia page will help explain it better:
Pokémon searches, after being confined to one species that has been seen by the player, can be further narrowed down to level and gender of the Pokémon available. By level, players can search for and request Pokémon level 9 and under, level 10 and up, level 20 and up, and so on to level 100, or they can search for Pokémon of any level. Gender is similar, with the player being able to search for male, female, or either gender of the selected Pokémon.
