Jima/Shima means "island" right? So why aren't Niijima, Kōzushima, Shikinejima, Toshima called Nii Island, Kouzu Island, Shikine Island, etc? Or Tsutentaku, Gintaku, Kintaku called Tsuten Tower, Silver Tower and Gold Tower? Et cetera?

Why is Montenegro not Black Mountain? Why is Beijing not Bei Capital? Why do we say Polynesian islands? For that matter, why do we say PIN number, ATM machine or HIV virus?
