Question about something that Ash says

THIS IS A NEUTRAL MESSAGE HAVING NOTHING TO DO WITH MY VA OPINIONS!

I have noticed that ever since the new voice actors started voicing the characters, Ash seems to say "What the..?!" a lot, usually as an exclamation. I never noticed his saying this before the switchover.

I was curious if he says this in place of a Japanese expression (to match lip flap) and if so, what is it?
