Question about the Pokedex - Area description

In the area section for each Pokemon entry in the Pokedex, I am confused by what is being indicated by the flashing areas. Sometimes, the areas are blue, some are a different color. Some flash one group of areas, then turns off to flash another group of areas... Does anyone know what all this means?

I think it's the difference between how... like surfing, grass, or something, or else it's cave/landmark vs route.
