I was just watching the episode with Team Magma and Team Aqua holding Ash captured and the leader of Team Magma knew Ash name. Is he that well known with villains every where?

Apparently. Or Maxie is just magic.

He just knows these things.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure J didn't know Ash's name when she first met him. So no, not every villian knows Ash's name.

And anyway, He'd probably heard it through the grapevine, as his grunts have encountered Ash on several occasions. Not to mention that they briefly met Tabitha.
And that his companions directly address him, so he just kinda picked it up.

Because every time Ash meets another organism, he exclaims "HI, I'M ASH KETCHUM FROM PALLET TOWN!" so loud that the entire world hears.

LOL, I don't know. I don't really pay attention to these things that much. My best guess is that they just overhear during their little spying sessions. Or television.

Well to be fair when his friends address him, they do call him by name.

I remember Dogasu said Maxie wasn't supposed to know who Ash was (in the original). But that would be excluding any mention of his name prior to Maxie calling him by name. In the dub it made sense because May or Max actually said "Calm down Ash." prior to Maxie asking the question. I mean I'm sure Maxie inferred from that remark by May or Max. It's not like Maxie said "Why do I get the feeling you don't like us Ash Ketchum of pallet town, who won top 16 in the Indigo League, and Top 8 in the Johto League?"

I think the villain just infer, which is fine with me.

At least Cyrus (in the dub) didn't say Ash he just said "No, not him."

Any kid who can save the world about 12 times is bound to have his name well-known.

I don't give a rat's ass how a character who only appeared for 2 episodes knows the main protagonist. Something that happened well over 200 episodes ago... This series ran for over 600- I'm not going to focus on the tiniest of details.

Eazy there, no need to get into a panic about this. I was just asking a simple question. I knew the anime wouldn't get into this, just a question to the fans =/
I guess that's true people of his group could have tolled him his name.

There's the door. No one made you walk through it.

I think a better question is why isn't Ash famous after all the Gyms and tournaments he's competed in? Not to mention he conquered the Hoenn Battle Frontier too.

He's an evil leader he has nothing better then hide cameras all over the world and watch them

Fame is an odd thing in that world. Consider how Norman is a big star in the area around his gym yet pretty much unknown even in the next town.

I kinds of assumed Ash would only be well-known amongst Tournament fans... there are hundreds and hundreds of entrants and preumably a huge amount of tournies going on every year, and Ash has never even gotten in the Top 4. Surely he's known about; we've seen him recognized by characters like Max and the Nurse Joy in late BF, and he was given the honor of finishing the torch run in the Ever Grande Conference for his past dealings. But I don't think random Joe Schmoes who don't obsess over Pokémon battling would recognize him easily.

I would have to agree. It’s similar to casual sports fans in a way, if you don’t follow the sport; you’re not going to be aware about the non-big names. It’s not like everyone isn’t aware of what Ash has done. When Ash battled Dome Ace Tucker didn’t the announcer mention all of Ash’s accomplishments?

Why would Ash be famous? Reggie has almost the same achievements as Ash and he isn't famous... Paul is also close to Reggie with his achievements
There are probably a lot of trainers better than all of these three together
And you mean the KANTO BF - not Hoenn
Also, it'd get a little annoying if any second person would say "oh you're Ash who participate in this and that league!" or whatever... it'd also make it seem like is much better than he actually is and much closer to his goal than the writers want us to think

And about the name thing - most likely, in the original they didn't say Ash's name
I also hate how Paul in the dub called Ash by name in his first appearance... it was really annoying... in the original Paul never called Ash by name and it's really emphasizing their relationship with Ash calling Paul by name and Paul doesn't do the same
I don't like it when the dub ruins things like this... I remember one of the Chronicles ep Dogasu reported Jessie didn't immediately call James by name like the dub did which is again was something important that showed she still didn't feel so close to him at first

Obviously Giovanni wants his Anime Son to be known for the damn bastards to fear him.
