It's pretty simple and this topic can die once I get it answered in enough detail.

In the first opening scenes, was the gun edited out in the original airing of the said episode?

No, I don't think it was edited out.

I remember always seeing the gun in this episode.

4Kids missed that edit? Wow! Just wow! I saw it and I was wondering was this an uncut version, but it's the original. I guess since no one was threated with the gun, ala Legendary Dratini, it was no big deal.

I guess as long as the weapon doesn't directly point at someone it stays it seems...

Though the thoughts Ash had in Snap's debut episode surprised me a bit since it specifically does mention that he thinks they are getting shot by a gun or something. Within the same episode they left the whole riceball/onigiri mention, but they probably had no choice considering it directly shows Brock making some. (l33t skillz he had)

Anyway the other episodes in today's mini-marathon all appear to be ones that had some edits in the 4kids version and later changed, or were not shown again in syndication.

They didn't edit the gun in the dub.

There are several reasons it was allowed to be kept in. It wasn't actually fired (unlike the warden's gun in the Miniryuu episode). It wasn't pointed at anyone (unlike the warden's gun). And, probably most importantly, there was a big anti-gun message tied into the weapon's appearance. Remember how Pikachu doesn't want to attack the thief because he has a firearm? That sort of after-school special message almost guaranteed the scene gets to stay in the episode.

In "Here Comes the Squirtle Squad" Ash had several weapons (including shot guns) pointed at him. Though, none of them were fired. They didn't get edit happy until later.

Frankly I don't get the big fit about guns. If someone is committing ARMED robbery they'll have a knife or a firearm.

At the time when "Squirtle Squad" aired, Pokemon was still largely flying under the radar, (in the English-speaking world, at least) playing early on sunday mornings and the like. You can get away with a lot more when you figure no one is actually watching... Actually, I'm pretty sure that's how a lot of those first season episodes even got MADE. *laugh*. Now that I think of it, however, wasn't the script itself made "friendlier"? Misty fearing having her hair dyed purple, rather than something more dire?

But, yeah, when you find your product in the public eye, you're a lot more cautious than when it's a little weird underground thing.

Speaking of which, I do remember the old Pokemon.com having episode sympnosises for the two skipped season 1 episodes in their episode guide way back in the day.
