I thought I'd try something out. I'll post a quote every week, and we can discuss it! How does that sound? To start off with...

Never forget that the most powerful force on earth is love.
--Nelson Rockefeller

While it's true that love can move the proverbial mountains, I would tend to think that the most powerful force on earth is apathy. By doing nothing, people let even things they love decay. Or would apathy even count as a force? Since by its very nature it's nothing at all.

I agree with the quote wholeheartedly. Love, our most enigmatic emotion, is capable of breaking through even the strongest of barriers. Love grants a person hope, validation and allows them to realize the height of their potential.

It's also the most dangerous of our emotions. Love can create sadness, emptiness, even hatred. Although Apathy is far stronger in the respect that inaction usually invokes negative circumstances.

Apathy is definitely the strongest force among college students. ;-)

^ and public services workers. :D

Definitely. I've experienced it myself, especially the breaking barriers thing.

Actually Harry Potter.

Dumbledore says love is stronger then magic. :p

I think my favorite quote was...
something like, "the more you want to forget a memory, the more you remember it"... xD
and love is an emotion not to be taken lightly because it's innocent and yet ...evil.

I think that the earth is the most powerful force on earth XD

"I told the volcano that I love it, so it won't errupt and kill everyone!"
"So that magma's gonna miss the village?"

Oooh... not THAT kind of force?
In that case, I think it's greed. It might sound pessimistic but, you've got to admit, greed kills.

Apathy is more like a lack of force, so maybe that absence of emotion would actually count as a force...

What about revenge? That all consuming emotion...pretty powerful..

But not everyone will have the guts to follow through with vengeance against someone. Love is almost instinctive.

How about hatred?

It's easy to hate and if it consumes someone enough, you're pretty much bound to do anything.
It could even pass on and become psychotic.

Then again are emotions really that easy to determine? They do go hand-in-hand with one's selfesteem and selfconsciousness, don't they?

I don't think you can truly draw distinction between love and hatred as forces ; they are too deeply intertwined.

And together, they form the best (and arguably only) force there is when it comes to shattering every last barrier of our self-preservation instincts. Greed, powerful or not, will never be enough for someone to deliberately, clearly sacrifice themselves. Love - and Hate - yes.
