I did this on my friend's pokemon forum a few years ago and it was pretty fun so I figured I'd try it out here, too. The idea of it is you basically get a few people together to restart a game on either pokemon blue, red, or yellow at the same time (or the same day atleast), and periodically post updates of their pokemon, their levels, badges, and whatever other overall stats they wanna post.

It's called race to the finish because the main goal is to see who can beat the game first, but there are other goals throughout, like who can catch the most pokemon, who has the strongest pokemon, etc.

If enough people get interested we can start this as soon as possible! So what do you think? Who's in?

Okaaaay. Interesting. Most people I know wouldnt want to restart their first game, or it has run out of battery. My blue still works, and I restarted it to test te Mew glitch recently, so I could, though I think you should post with more details of the competition

Awe, that's unfortunate. I've beaten/restarted my games so many times that it doesn't really bother me anymore, haha.

As far as details go, basically what will happen is when enough people say they'll play (which can be 4 people, or it can be 24, or whatever. It all depends on how actively interested people get, you know?) then the game will have a 24 hour start period. In that time period, players can start their games and do whatever they'd like without getting the first badge, so it's a really good time to catch pokemon or level them up.

Players let other players know how far they've come through a system of updates, which are entirely up to the individual player as to when to post them. They can update after they've caught a few pokemon, or after their pokemon have leveled up, or the most common, when they earn a badge, but anything is fair ground for updates. If the player is interested in catching the most pokemon, then their updates will probably include more pokemon catch updates, and if the player is more interested in having the strongest pokemon their updates will probably include more leveling up. It depends on the person.

The only update that's actually required though is one during the 24 hour start up period that lets everybody know that they've actually begun the game. Players can go on to get their first badge a full 24 hours after the time of the post that says the game started.

The winner is, essentially, whoever beats the game first. At that time game has a 24 hour wind-down period, where players have a final day to catch pokemon or level their pokemon up. When that's over, everybody can make a final update about their status throughout the game, and there will be two follow up winners, whoever has the most pokemon, and whoever's team is the strongest. The latter will be determined by the players top 10 highest-leveled pokemon.

I think that covers most of the details about the actual game... from personal experience, the game usually pans out at its own pace since players choose their own level of involvement and its common for players to choose other players as their rivals, in which case they have an additional goal of beating their rival in all aspects of the game-winning first, catching more pokemon, and having stronger pokemon.

I don't think I'm leaving out anything too significant, but if I am, I'll promptly fix this post with it...if there's any questions about it too, let me know and I'll clear things up.

I'm in I'll play yellow!! :3 this will help me pass the time till hg and ss

Sweet :] I'm actually gonna be in on yellow as well. I found my blue version yesterday when I was cleaning my room but being the space monkey that I am, I think I spaced out and threw it out because I can't find it anywhere....fortunately, I found my game boy advanced and it still had pokemon yellow in it. Not too stoked because I wanted to start with squirtle, but I'll manage.

What he meant was definitely not use an emulator because that's naughty and illegal and talking about them on here isn't allowed ;D

Anyway, this sounds so cool! I haven't played Gen I in about a year so this'll be cool! I'm up for it =]

Oh, yikes! Sorry about that, I'm new. x_x

Talk about what? I said nothing. :] *furiously edits post*

*hides evidence*
I don't think anyone really cares, it's more that the forums don't want to be responsible for any legal ramifications =]

This is a really great first thread! Any idea of when you want to start it? :)
I think I'll use Blue with Charmander.. I'll need a Butterfree for Brock D:

Ooh, is the Rare Candy cheat allowed? I hope not tbh, aha.

Yeah, that's perfectly understandable, haha. Anyways, thanks! :] I think I might start in a couple hours, seeing as how it's only around lunch time (where I am) and I'm gonna wait a little bit to see if anybody who's in classes right now would be interested. I'm hoping on starting sometime today because I'm pretty anxious to get started!

I'm going to go ahead and say cheats shouldn't be allowed. It takes away the actual competition of the game, and its overall not as interesting.

I'm in if it starts after this Friday (I've got a ton of work this week because it's the week before spring break for me. And plus my copies of red, blue and yellow are at home.)

I'll play whichever of my games works. I haven't touched them in years, so this should be fun.

Can I do Yellow?

Yeah, that's fine. :]

Hmm. Today's Tuesday? I think. I guess it kinda depends. ^^; If it does happen before then you can join later if you want, it does tend to get tricky trying to catch up though. I'm not sure how well the turn out for this will be, but I've played on other forums where a bunch of people wanted to join well after the first round of people started, so they just started a second round. That's a viable option too, just in case.

I don't think I'll be very fast, but can I join the race?

Yeah, for sure.

So far we have about 6, maybe 7? people. If we're waiting to start until Saturday, we'll probably have a really good turn-out. Most of the times I've done this, it was effectively within a day or two so there weren't that many players. Good call on waiting. :p

Okay. But I probably won't train more than 8 pokémon, so how can I say my top 10 highest leveled pokémon?

Yeah, same goes for me. It boils down to the top ten just to avoid possible ties. Even if you caught them and they're in boxes, they can still count, so if you catch a pokemon with a really high level that you don't plan on training at all, you could use that in your top 10.

Okay. So I just start off on Saturday, right? Okay then. I'll try to remember, lol.
