GORAN
PART ONE
My name is Goran. I am 18 years of age.
Ever since I was young, I've had a fascination with ghosts. Not just Ghost Pokemon, mind you, but ghosts. The unknown. Paranormal entities. The supernatural. Things from the other side. From young, I've always wondered what happens after we die.
This is the reason why:
I caught a Gastly when I was eight years old. I woke up one day at midnight, and I saw him hovering above my bed. He had wandered into my house, and was just staring at me, his red eyes and fangs in the darkness.
I wasn't scared, because I had read what Gastly were. Ghost Pokemon, mysterious spirits and energy that wandered the world, some remnants of Pokemon energy that once was alive.
The Gastly above my bed blinked, and than floated through the walls.
I got out of bed, and followed Gastly into the hall, where it vanished into my parents' room. I pushed open the door, and I saw my father pinned against the wall, a long gash sliced across his throat. A pool of blood, still wet, still trickling, had formed below his feet. I must have screamed, because the Gastly next to me flinched.
My father's eyes were open, unblinking, with tears streaking down his face, and he was staring straight ahead into the doorway. I stepped into the room, horrified at the sight. I looked around. Where was my mother? The bedsheets were tossed aside hurriedly, and long slashes ran across the sheets and bed.
Then I realized where my mother was.
I closed the door behind me, and there - my father was staring in the direction of my mother. She, too, was pinned against the door. Her fate had been worse - her eyes were gone, and her mouth sewn shut, little stitches binding the lips together, as though someone had taken the time, after killing her, to patch her together again.
I backed away, back into the hallway. A chill ran up my spine. Someone - someone was watching me.
I turned, and at the end of the dark hallway, I saw another pair of eyes. This pair was yellow.
They were yellow, and they were staring at me.
They weren't the eyes of a Pokemon. This was a... man. A figure. I felt his imposing presence, his build, his power, even at the end of the hallway.
The eyes blinked.
And then... I heard a THUD.
Of a boot.
THUD.
The man was walking towards me.
I couldn't move. I couldn't scream. I didn't know how to react. All I can remember is that, I knew it was the end of me. I would die with my parents, bloodless and hanging on the walls.
THUD. THUD.
No, I thought.
THUD. THUD.
Then the Gastly materialized next to me.
Its eyes glowed purple, and a strange purple wall formed between me and the man. No, it wasn't a man. The purple wall formed between me and the figure.
"Now, now," a voice called, a thick, metallic voice threaded with sadness and malice and joy all at once. "Don't interfere with what you do not know."
The Gastly floated in front of me.
"I will kill you too," The figure droned. He was just standing five feet away from me, right in front of the wall. At the distance, I was suddenly aware of heat, a radiating heat that was burning the air between us.
The Gastly's eyes glowed purple, and the wall reacted, glowing even brighter.
In response, the man's eyes flashed yellow, and the heat between us intensified. It was crackling. I could feel my hair stand, and my skin heat up. Gastly cringed, feeling the heat too.
I backed away, slowly. Away from the fiery man, who was burning without light, whose heat I could feel, but not see. All I saw in the dark hallway was still his eyes, and the purple wall that did not illuminate the owner of those eyes.
I backed away - and I hit someone.
"Don't be scared," a voice behind me said. Soothing. Calm.
I turned.
It was a woman. A woman in a silver nightgown, who resembled my mother. She had gold hair, a bright stunning mane flowing from her crown, and a silver necklace draped around her neck. Her skin was pure and smooth, and she radiated warmth too, but not the kind that made me want to back away. It was soothing, like her voice, and comfortable. In her light... I knew I was safe.
"Help me," I remembered sobbing. "I'm scared."
"Gastly," the woman ordered. "Night Shade!"
Gastly hissed, and the purple wall expanded, filling the room with a strong purple light that blinded me.
"Ah!" The figure on the other end exclaimed. His voice turned harsh, even more metallic, raw. "Do not think you can protect him forever!"
I closed my eyes for a second, and when I opened them... He was gone. The burning heat I had felt on my skin seconds earlier had also vanished.
I turned.
So had the woman. She had disappeared too. The only things left in the hallway were me, and Gastly.
I fainted then, and when I woke later, I was in the hospital. Gastly was by my side, hovering above me, like the first time we met.
The authorities ruled the attack a homicide. At first they suspected Gastly, but after talking to me, and a Pokemon professor from my father's university, they realized a Pokemon did not have the power to pin my father and mother to the wall and door, and drain them of all blood.
That was the beginning of my nightmare.
Since then, my fascination with Ghosts has not ceased. In fact, I am more driven, than ever, to find out who did this to my parents. Since then, Gastly has evolved into a Haunter, and he has protected me in the ten years that followed.
I want to know the truth. And I will stop at nothing to take revenge.
