Director Raimi felt as though he could not realistically deliver the film he wanted to make by the studio's due date, causing the director to pull out of the comic book franchise, scrapping the film.

According to website Deadline.com, Raimi told Sony before walking from Spider-Man 4: "I can't make your date. I can't go forward creatively." It seemed that Sony wanted Spider-Man 4 to be shot in 3D, something that no one on the crew was apparently knowledgeable about and something that would have added six months to production.

...Which may or may not be good news for any 'Warcraft' fans.

With Spidey off the radar, will Raimi turn his attention towards directing the 'World of Warcraft' film? We shall see.

Altered Zeta's title to reflect new info in the forum of a press release from Sony:

Culver City, CA (January 11, 2010) -- Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,” said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

“We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. “Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.”

"Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.

That's right. It all begins anew. Let's all join hands and pray for no Goblin armor this time around.

Spider-man 4 canceled, eh? I think he shold get Namco-Bandai and Toei to help him make a movie out of Digimon. Seriously, if here were to do so, he'd make it EPIC!

Re: Raimi officially cancels Spider-Man 4; Sony Pursuing Reboot

Wait a reboot?

Oh this does NOT bode well for the marvel franchise.

But then again... now they can use villains they couldn't use without retconning the games.

Re: Raimi officially cancels Spider-Man 4; Sony Pursuing Reboot

Right. So they're restarting the story all over again.

Well, Tobey did seem to be getting a bit old for the part, but apart from that...

*head-desk*

Re: Raimi officially cancels Spider-Man 4; Sony Pursuing Reboot

If the rumors of Felicia Hardy being featured as "The Vultress" were actually true and not a mislead, this is probably for the better. '_';

Honestly, I am glad about this. By the end of the third movie, the portrayals of Peter and MJ were absolutely awful, and I really can't imagine them getting any better. Tobey always felt too old for the role anyway, and Mary Jane always felt more like an original character than Mary Jane.

It will be interesting to see an entire movie devoted to high school-aged Peter Parker. Hopefully they can take the chance to have the story focus around the teen drama, with lots of focus on the civilian lives of Peter and his friends. Overall, I'm really hoping for a more fun feeling... we have the tragedy of Ben's death, but the original movie series just felt too depressing for its own good. Teenage life is fun, believe it or not; let's see that channeled into the overall feeling. Like Ulimate Spider-Man (pre-Gwen's death) and the appropriately-named Spectacular Spider-Man TV series (which, btw, should not have been canceled... ugh).

Although I have to wonder what their going to do with the origin story. We just saw the origin story. Are we just going to skim over it or what? Also have to worry about the timing... doesn't it seem just too soon to start with a reboot? Why can't we wait a while first?

look what they did with Hulk...

I actually am going to say I approve. they backed themselves into a corner with villains by making them appear en masse in the games. The stories weren't getting better, the characters were not getting better, the films were frankly just not feeling awesome like Iron Man or Hulk or X-men (X-2 and last stand I'm still wondering about). So, perhaps a reboot might be a good plan.

Re: Raimi officially cancels Spider-Man 4; Sony Pursuing Reboot

Tobey was miscast. I want a reboot so we can get someone younger and funnier in as Spider-man, honestly.

Re: Raimi officially cancels Spider-Man 4; Sony Pursuing Reboot

Reboot and in 2012... Please don't make me say it...

Anywho, maybe a reboot of the movie franchise would be good. So log as they follow the comics a bit closer.

Re: Raimi officially cancels Spider-Man 4; Sony Pursuing Reboot

I just wonder if they'll try and connect this with the Iron Man/Incredible Hulk/Avengers filmverse. Not like Spider-Man needs the association to be successful, but the Avengers film might provide a way to preview the new Spider-Man (or he could appear in the possible Avengers sequel).

The Mayans WERE talking about the beginning of a new cycle. Who knows? Maybe they were just big Spider-Man fans.

Re: Raimi officially cancels Spider-Man 4; Sony Pursuing Reboot

Two points: Marvel's characters in the comics change constantly, most of their films are at least 20 years behind based on plot. Two, after the disastrous appearance of Venom (arguably the best Spidey villain there is) a reboot is a good thing in my opinion.

Re: Raimi officially cancels Spider-Man 4; Sony Pursuing Reboot

But they were doing so well. Why can't they just pick up from what Raimi left? And why 2012? We'll all be dead by then *shot*

Re: Raimi officially cancels Spider-Man 4; Sony Pursuing Reboot

The first one was good, the second one was better, but number three was a step in the wrong direction. A rethink may prove just what Spidey needs, compare Ang Lee's Hulk with the most recent Hulk film.

No, we'll be dead in DECEMBER of 2012. This is coming out in the summer. Plenty of time to enjoy it.

But the reason they can't pick up from where Raimi left off can be summed up in two words: Batman Forever.

Re: Raimi officially cancels Spider-Man 4; Sony Pursuing Reboot

You know, I'm on the fence on this one.

A reboot may not be such a bad idea, considering just how disappointing Spider-Man 3 was. (Emo dancing Spidey? Seriously guys, WTF?!) Yet, I can't help but feel it might be a bit too soon; if Spider-Man 4 had a script of the same caliber of SM2, we could have one helluva ride. There could have been a bit more life in the older franchise, if treated properly.

Like I said, it's a tough one for me to call.

Re: Raimi officially cancels Spider-Man 4; Sony Pursuing Reboot

Don't feel like creating a new thread for this. But...it looks like Raimi's already been replaced. Say hello to Marc Webb, the new director, formerly of "(500) Days of Summer."

I actually like the choice. For now, at least.
