Since the CoroCoro thread is too cluttered with discussion of the new species, the announcement of this feature warrants creating a separate thread.

PokéBeach said:
There is a new wireless feature called Random Match, which you can access from the Global Terminal inside Pokemon Centers. It will allow players to randomly battle other players around the country over Wi-Fi. It then says "You can upload your Black and White save file to the Internet," though for what purposes we do not know at this time.
CoroCoro also notes that foreign players (as in non-Japanese) will be able to communicate with the Japanese players once the games are released in other countries in 2011. There will be no difference from the GTS in that regard.

This thread can be used for discussing the rules that will be enforced in this kind of battles. The following is Bulbapedia's description of the feature from PBR:

Once logged on, one has the option of battling random Wi-Fi matches, or with friends. When battling random Wi-Fi, one can only play using the level 50 all rule set, but can select double or single battles (double being the default). After selecting the preferred Colosseum and Trainer Card, the game will begin searching for an opponent and the battle will begin when one is found. During the battle, all Pokémon nicknames are removed and all trainer quotes are set to their defaults. After the battle, one can exchange Friend Passes, but only if both parties are in agreement.

Bulbapedia isn't specific on points that are usually determined by applying custom rules, but obviously not in this feature. But it is well-known that all Pokémon are eligible, although legendary Pokémon were banned for a brief period in 2007. I'm quite sure that Black and White will use the Battle Tower's rules and ban Pokémon such as Mew and Mewtwo (ones that are normally unobtainable or have a base stat total of over 600 without a hindering ability).

Beyond deviations from PBR in terms of the rules, Black and White will allow players to upload their save files to the Internet. My guess is that a web site similar to the current one for the GTS, will be launched upon games' release and make it possible for players to select their "random" opponents. The actually random system will be used in-game without requiring Internet access, whereas the web site will allow players to browse the data uploaded by other players and request a battle with a player of their choice.

Hopefully, Game Freak have a few surprises up their sleeves, and the Internet feature will have an even broader use than the idea described above.

I wouldn't be surprised if "Pokémon Black and White Versions" has three main modes:
- Anything Goes (You can use any Pokémon) : Single and Double.
- Lv.50 Flat Battle : Single and Double.
- VGC 2010 Battle (with VGC restrictions).

Sounds like a pretty good way to amass a bunch of friend codes, assuming that system remains. It will hopefully cut down on the random battle questioning going on here.

And it will allow for variety in training, rather than training against the same teams thousands of times.

They need to add Ranks or a ladder system to this then.

Random battles are great, but there's not much incentive to go back and fight when you don't get anything out of it.

^There always could be,

I like the Random Match but I feel it should have been in DPPt/HgSs

You probably won't obtain EXP or EVs from it though.

Of course. This is a static environment. All Pokemon battles are like that when not in the traditional game.

Money would be a cool thing to earn though. And like I said, rank. Leaders boards. If I want to jump in for a random match to test my team out, then this function is perfect. But then I have to deal with morons that like to disconnect from fights.

Oh, I thought you wrote "EV battles". That's why I said it.

This is going to be an epic game... random battles? That's awesome, unless you verse someone with hacked pokemon... or bad move sets...

I also think this should've been in Platinum or HG/SS along the GTS thing... In fact it is something the games needed long ago but only really possible recently.

Sure, 50% of the people will have hacked pokemon with terrible moves, but otherwise it's battle tower with actual people.

Like Mario Kart DS.

Hopefully they find some sort of system to prevent such hacked Pokemon.

I hope there is no leader board to be honest as it will cause people to get frustrated and it might promote "hacking cheaters". This already happens with varies game that have a leader board, and something that's so popular like Pokemon would be a big no-no.

(Though personal records will be ok I suppose)

Like Modern Warfare 2? They crack down pretty hard on those people, no?

I would like to see some sort of matchmaking in the random battles so if you're halfway through the game you're not matched up against someone with all lvl 100 pokemon. Or maybe a more specific matchmaking that matches the average stats of your party as closely as possible keeping the matches more fair.
I would like to see some sort of hacked pokemon check to keep those ridiculous pokemon in battles. It would just keep things more fair. If the vgc can do it I'm sure they can incorporate it somewhere in the battle system.
Leaderboards would also be cool in this system if they were based off your matchmaking level. Basically the same leveling system concept as say halo or call of duty, but that actually shows your position compared to people with similar play time/skill/etc.
I know it won't happen, but I hope pokemon you see in the wifi battles will show up as "seen" in your pokedex. I think it would fit along nicely with the gts. You see a pokemon fighting online, you can go later and look for one for trade.
Also rather than earning money in the wifi battles, I hope they give battle points (or something similar) for these fights, and have the ability to trade them for evo stones and whatnot, like the battle frontiers.
Another thing, I don't know how they'd do it, but I think it would be cool to have some sort of tournaments in these wifi battles. It would be hard to pull off but that would be badass to be in a competition without having to actually go anywhere.
Anyways, just some ideas. I hope some of these come true

I know people will abuse this feature, particularly those with cheating devices or mods like PokeSAV. =_= The Random Match is going to very unpleasant when the cheaters flood the place with their hacked ubers.

I'm hoping we'll get some sort of hacked pkmn detection in this. They did it in the vgc, so I'm sure they can do it here
