We were talking about what we want in a 3D Pokemon RPG on the recent Bulbacast, and as you guys can tell, PPN and I had differing ideas as to how we would want one to be executed. We also realized that you listeners might have totally differing ideas as well, so we decided that it might be a good idea to make this thread and we can all have a good ol' discussion.

So, 3D Console PokeRPG: Discuss.

you should get the option of letting at least one Pokemon out of its ball to follow you on the map. Considering how in Colosseum and XD, the models were the same both in and out of battle, it'd be a lot easier to pull off in a 3D game than expecting them to make map sprites of every Pokemon. On that note, you should also see your Pokemon perform an HM move, if a 3D game even has HM obstacles (Colosseum/XD didn't).

Also, they NEED to make the battles more fast-paced. It's probably excusable in the Stadium games/Battle Revolution because 3D battling is all the game is based around, thus they could spend time making everything flashy and drawn out, spending more seconds on each turn than in the 2D games. In an RPG, however, this is not excusable. You encounter several battles just getting from place to place, and then there's all the leveling involved. My ideal solution would be to just show each Pokemon attacking without closing up on it, and to just dash across the screen quickly when delivering a physical strike (on that note, I was very disappointed by how limited they made the hits connecting in Battle Revolution), maybe just have damage numbers and status conditions appear over the models' heads. You know, kind of what you'd expect from a lot of other 3D RPGs. At the very least, they could stop doing close-ups of each individual Pokemon getting hit by Sandstorm or getting damaged by poison.

One word: Cel-shaded.

Battrio has shown me it's the way to go.

I agree and it would be even better if the cel-shaded graphics looked similar to Dragon Quest VIII.

Oh hell yeah! I mean, if Akira "Dragonball" Toriyama can do the character designs for the Dragon Quest games, why not have the pokemon animation crew do the character designs for a pokemon console rpg?

Additionally with Dragon Quest IX being released for the DS, Nintendo and Square-Enix could make a possible deal to get amazing graphics of that sort.

Sorry to go off topic, though probably the best part of a three dimensional Pokémon game would be seeing everything in lush detail. Seeing the rivers, forests, mountains, glaciers, etc. in addition to finding (by the time they make it) over 600+ monsters.

in addition to finding (by the time they make it) over 600+ monsters.

they could still release a 3D RPG in the current generation. All things considered, Battle Revolution just got out at the very start.

Yeah, didn't GS say they already had a RPG planned for the Wii? Or atlest I'm remember hearing around last spring...

I'd prefer a 3-d version of the DS games, but with more "oomph".

In Battles the Pokemon would move around the battlefield like in Skies of Arcadia along with your character.

And seeing the Pokemon outside of battle, but then when they touch you you enter the fight on a different screen.

I'd prefer Fake Cell Shading like what is in PBR, but I think they should try to organize it in a more anime styled battling sense. (Well, maybe not chaotic, but completely different from the Gameboy games)

Maybe a stamina bar that requires monsters to be feed to refill, which is used to determine evasion, accuracy, efficiency as well as amount of critical hits taken and received. Just something to make it feel completely different without having a feeling of a gimmick or something.

I also think there should be more unofficial HMs, some working like other HMs but maybe uses more stamina or PP points. (Like slash or any type of sword move can be used to slash down weeds in the path, or any fighting or steel move for rock smash)

I think it should also take place in a new region that also has itself open to other new region. Then having expansion packs for the new regions and eventually new pokemon.
------------

The Skies movement is an interesting idea, as long as they make it more fast paced.. Definitely would want it to be like the gameboy adventures, but for actual gameplay it should be separate. I wouldn't want to take the attention from the real series.

Personally, I envisioned how Skies of Arcadia-like battles would look like in Pokemon. In particular, I thought a battle taking place in a forest between light, agile Pokemon could involve them jumping around the treetops. Though, I imagine that'd take a lot of programming to suit such stuff towards each environment and Pokemon, not to mention attacks (the amount of Pokemon learning Mimic sure doesn't help that cause).

A 3D version of Dungeon on a console would be pretty sweet (it'd be made even better if you could use a Pokemon's abilities on the map, such as flying). But for a regular RPG, I'd definitely take another more original storyline like with Colosseum and XD over the badge-collecting, championship-aiming, evil-team-plus-save-the-world-plot-pushed-to-the-sidelines storyline we always get in the portables with slight alterations every generation (and as generic as they are in other RPGs, I'd love to play as a teen-ager over a 10-year old rookie more often... hell, I don't care how over-used that 14-18 age demographic for Japanese protagonists is, I like it ^^). They just need to pull it off a LOT better is all.

For one thing, since the characters were more established in the GC RPGs rather than being a simple player avatar, they really could've done with some better characterization, maybe make the character have some dialog (though, I guess a lack of it is to be expected from former makers of Mother and Dragon Quest... still, I'm pretty amazed that Mystery Dungeon managed to have protagonist dialog and characterization given that it was more or less a player avatar as well, even though the dialog seemed partially limited and the partner did most the talking/emoting). At the very least, they could intermix the character's established personality a lot better with the storyline, as opposed to, say, very briefly touching upon the fact that Leo was a Snatch Dan traitor very early in the game, then pretty much never bringing it up again.

Not having a cop-out ending [cough]Houou[cough] would also help a lot (I still need to play through XD, mind you, though I don't have high hopes for its ending). They also could've taken advantage of the fact that the Pokemon you catch in Colosseum is very limited... perhaps making some of your party members actually play a part in the storyline so long as you're unable to trade them away (for the time being).

I would like Voice interaction, For ex: you would have to yell; Pikachu, use thunder!! Or; Pikachu Dodge that, and counter with Quick Attack!! This would allow more fast paced battles and actually let Pokemon stear away from more strict turn based style.

I think the option to start in any region would be cool, but a whole new region would probably be more likely and feasable.

Online play of course, actually, a WoW style Pokemon mmorpg would be sweet, (without the charge, though if it was good I would pay for it)... Trainers across the world running accross the world of pokemon, battling and trading etc over the internet... That, for me, would be a gaming dream come true.

Also, little tidbits like being able to throw your pokeball out with the wiimote would be icing on the cake. Of course, WoW style gameplay wouldnt be possible on a Wii, so...

I wish gamefreak would make the console games. They games wouldn't suck. Genious senority is very bad at making a story that people like. That is the main problem why the console games fail.

I'd like something that uses the same mechanics as the GBA/DS games, kind of like Colloseum/XD(I actually really liked those games). But instead of being in Orre, I'd like to see all 4 regions, with a choice of which one to start in, and travel from one to another(kind of like going to Kanto in GSC, but with a choice of regions).

I agreed with many of PPN Steve's ideas. I think a 3D version of a classic handheld Pokemon RPG would succeed. You would free roam as a 3D trainer and Wild battles would occur in the grass (snow/marsh/water/etc.) as they do now. You don't really see the pokemon till they sneak up on you. Trainer battles would be similar. It's mostly just people walking around but when you agree to a battle a PBR kind of even shows up and you're both battling in the same area.

It'd make a great translation, in my opinion but with a few changes.

A few pokemon (it'd be hard to animat, so only a select amount of small ones) could follow you around/interact with you a la Yellow version, souped up, of course.

There would be dialogue and TRULY amazing story.

It would remain third person with the option to switch to first person like many modern adventure games (like Zelda).

After a heavy overdose of Bulbacast, I just thought I'd let my mind run wild on the thought of 'If I could have the perfect Pokemon 3D console RPG, what would it be like?' -this document ensued.

Some of the ideas are from listening to Bulbacast's ep 26 and looking on this thread.
