Okay, I'm pretty sure there isn't a topic for this yet so...

How much of the pokemon world is related to real countries?

Surge is from the United States (obviously) and Fantina says she is from another country (most likely France).

So if other countries like the United States exist then where do the pokemon regions fit in?

Is the pokemon world an alternate version of Japan? Or on an entirely imaginary continent or country altogether?

Are foreign countries also populated with pokemon to the extent that the regions (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Isshu) are?

These are just some questions that I have regarding exactly how much of the real world and the pokemon world have in common with one another. Any thoughts?

Obviously Surge is from Isshu, because I firmly believe that Isshu is New York, and New York is in the US.
