I've grown sick of using my old mIRC w/ Invision script, and I'm looking for something new. Something that's still easy on the eyes, preferably actually freeware, not nagware. X-chat is sadly out (Windows platform is free as Shareware only, and I don't know how I could rebuild it from the source code to get it without that), so I'm not sure what to get.
 
Damnit, so much for that. I assume that this one doesn't work when my computer locale is set to Japanese, right? This one isn't displaying Japanese characters for the menu's, etc, it's displaying small empty box's. I'd prefer it display in English, of course.

EDIT: Got it running with Daemon404's build, from http://silenceisdefeat.org/~b0at/xchat/win32/. Now I just need to figure out how to get the Menu's displaying in English.

EDIT2: Well, that was easy. All I did was rename the Japanese locale directory, and it reverted to English. ^^;

EDIT3: Bah, I can't get used to this clunky interface. It's just unsuited to my needs. Guess I'll be crawling back to mIRC. ;_;

Clunky interface? From what I've seen, mIRC is the one with the clunky interface and bad design.
 
If you don't mind absolutely raping your CPU if you so happen to be in more than two channels at the same time, there's always Trillian.
 
You really shouldn't be using such a high screen resolution if you have poor eyesight.
 
I run them full screen so I can have things large enough while still maintaining a good working area size. Honestly, it wouldn't help any if I had it on the lowest resolution. Even with my glasses on, I get blur starting at less than 30cm from my eyes. Glasses off, and I can't even read the computer screen while sitting down at my desk.
 
I find that the channel tab system of X-Chat is much easier to navigate than having many channel windows open. This makes keeping track of channels and networks that much easier (Hell, I run xchat with 11 networks and ~55 channels on autojoin, and it does a fine job in organizing it).

However though, I don't like the default 2.4/2.6 black on white color scheme, I like the 2.0 default white on black color scheme (doesn't hurt my eyes). Download it from http://www.xchat.org/files/themes/blacktheme.zip and read the instructions.

The xchat tab system != The mIRC tab system. All of the xchat tabs are contained in one single window. In mIRC, there is one main window and seperate independent windows for each channel/network. I find that tab system to be uneconomical, especially when your cpu is at 100% and you need to maximize a particular channel window. I'd rather have the channels organized in which I can keep track of all of them, without too much hassle.
 
Xchat on Windows is a pain to totally get plugins like winamp to work....

Thats why I still totally use mIRC. =p
 
You "totally" use it, huh? >_>; lol
But yeah, I use X-Chat2, and like it a lot. The channel auto-join is very helpful, especially when you have more than one channel/network to join.
