Red's hair color in FRLG/HGSS

This is a really stupid question but i am gonna ask it anyway.

At first,I thought it was brown but then i came across a lot of fan art and in most of them he is portrayed with black hair.
He has brownish hair in his back sprite in the games but in the official art it doesn't look brown, it looks grayish.

So what is his actual hair color?

Is it black, brown or dark gray?

Officially, Red's hair color in FRLG/HGSS is brown. A lot of fanart uses his hair color from RBY/GSC, which was closer to black.

Voted for the wrong option (black instead of brown). Red's hair used to be black in R/B/Y, but they changed it to brown in FR/LG and HG/SS. I think the reason why it's black in HG/SS is because Red's sprite designer didn't have enough space in the sprite to put the brown hair in.

Yeah, Ash is based of Red, but that doesn't mean they look a lot alike. Their personalities are nothing alike, for one.

You're probably looking at pictures of Red from Pokemon Special, who has black hair. They dress the same, just different hair and eye colors.

I'd say Brown in FRLG, Black in HGSS...the reason? Simple, the amount of dirt in his hair from possibly being in Mt. Silver for all that time cause his hair to turn black. When he finally gets the chance to properly wash it, it'll turn back to brown.

Brown. It's officially brown, and the concept art supports that if you look at it. So do his in-game sprites, for that matter. Why is this even a question?

So you're going to listen to fanart? Most fanart I see seem to use Special's design anyway.

Where are you finding his official art for HgSs? His FrLg one is undoubtedly brown.

In any case, if it was Dark Grey, its probably the same case as Dawn's "blue hair" and is just exhibiting a bit of this trope and the colour is most likely black.

However, I have no idea what art you are looking at, link please.

FireRed/LeafGreen Sprite: Brown

HeartGold/SoulSilver Sprite: Black, but they probably didn't have enough pixels to fit any brown in.

Sorry those images are a little grainy, they're jpegs. Any fanart that depicts him with black hair is probably influenced by Adventures or the anime, since he definitely has brown hair in the games.

Upon further review, you're absolutely right. Funny the way that works out, since it's definitely brown in the FRLG sprite and the other games he appears in (Colosseum, XD, Super Smash Bros). I guess it comes down to which is more authoritative, the official art or the games themselves?
