reference to "Dog of Flanders" in "holy matrimony"?

Why? Why did you have to show me that clip? I just saw the 1997 anime movie remake of that series a few months ago which is actually more depressing that the original anime series. I had finally gotten to a point where I could think about it and not get sad and now that I've seen the original version it got all depressed again.

That aside thanks for the link because now I want to see the rest of that Anime Around the World special. By the way, yes that was a direct reference to A Dog of Flanders in the episode.
 
According to the bulbapedia article on Holy Matrimony, the flashback was to a story called
"The Litte Orphan"(http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/EP048) Then again, that anime in the clip could also be based on that story. I found it pretty sad even w/o understanding the dialog.

I think it's pretty obvious that "HM" was referencing Dog of Flanders.
 
Woah woah WOAH. Speaking of references to that story, I just saw a near exact retelling of it on Shin Chan! You can watch it for free on the adult swim website for a couple more days. It's a funny one too :p
