Professor Cedarwood sat in his lab staring at the young trainers in front of him. He had a simple appearance with jeans, a long sleeved black shirt, short messy brown hair, and brown eyes with round glasses over them. He was thinking that they were a very good group in front of him. His lab was at a corner edge of the region near a beach. Ahead of it was short area of trees and grass, mostly clear with common early route pokemon. It was known as Route Grass. Yes they didn't use numbers here. Ahead of that they would find a small town to get supplies and after that was a forest. Though to start off he was to give the trainers what was necessary to start their journey via Route Grass. "Now then I am Professor Cedarwood. And here is what you need to start off. First a map of the region," he said holding up a simple paper map. "Second five pokeballs." He didn't give them normal pokeballs. No instead they each got a quick ball, timer ball, premier ball, repeat ball, and luxury ball. "And medical kits. Each kit has bandages and other stuff like that as well as five potions, antidotes, awakenings, and paralyze heals. There is also this," he held up a booklet. "You will get stamps at each destination here in the region and thus we will know that you have visited places. Lastly for Alceste, a pancham to start you off. I also have here my number. You may all begin. Just head down Route Grass to Go Town where you can find more supplies. Just mind the prices of course. Good luck and Enjoy," he finished sending them off.

((Sorry I got distracted but here we go. Along Route Grass you will find pidgey, rattatta, spearow, nidorans, abra, sentret, bidoof, starly, zigzagoon, taillow, patrat, purrloin, fletchling, ralts, bunnelby))

Camille graciously accepted the supplies given to her, and organized everything in her travel bag. "Thank you, Professor!" She cheered, bowing respectfully and leaving. Once she got outside, she tossed her lone Poke Ball in the air, and from it, an Absol appeared. This was Pandora, her trusted companion and birthday present from her mother. Since she received her, the young celebrity never appeared without the Absol at her side.

"Let's go, Pandora! We're finally gonna follow in Mom and Dad's footsteps and become the best in the land!" Camille cheered, unable to contain her excitement. "Onwards into the unknown!" With a dramatic flourish, she started running, Pandora at her heels, apparently affected by her Trainer's contagious excitement.

Kazama blinked, taking the abundance of supplies somewhat awkwardly and placing them in her backpack. "Alright then.. From now on, we're on our own.." The undersized girl mumbled, almost seemingly to herself. Then, she withdrew a strangely designed Poké Ball, expelling a brilliant crimson energy from within the capsule. That scarlet energy materialized into a vague floating shape, which then proceeded to solidify into a Darkrai. Giving a slight nod in understanding, it sized up the other trainers in a seemingly judgmental stare with it's pale, icy blue eyes. Beckoning the Pitch-Black Pokémon with a flick of her wrist, Kazama gestured for the Darkrai to follow. As it floated forth, Kazama shot forward, followed by the black, red and white blur of her partner.

Alceste stood in the lab for a while, finishing his last sandwich, he didn't want to ruin it it the supplies with it. After stuffing the last bite with his face, he used his sleeve to wipe off the remaining jelly, and took the supplies from the man, messily stuffing them in his book bag. The map was hastily shoved between the pages of the booklet he received.

"All right, new Pokemon, come out!" exclaimed the boy, throwing the red and white orb that was Pancham's Pokeball up in the air. A small panda chewing a leaf came out in a flash of blue light. Alceste was excited, this was the first Pokemon he has been in close contact with for a long time; he wasn't even sure when that even was. Well, there's a first time for everything.

"Come on, let's go!" and with that, the duo was ready for adventure and ran out the lab.

Tyler was actually pretty intimidated upon seeing the other trainers release their Pokemon. He was still a fairly new trainer himself so seeing people that had legendarie or Pokemon that looked really strong was something he didn't expect. "This is...different to what I expected," he said to himself, tapping his chin before sighing. "Well might s well head out!" he called out before releasing his Piplup, the small critter looking up at him and smiling brightly.

Camille and Pandora kept running until they reached Route grass. Camille stopped to rest, while Pandora leaped into a bush, returning a minute later with a Ralts on her back. Camille watched the two as they had a conversation, and Ralts looked like it was content on the Absol's back, something that confused Camille. After a few minutes, Pandora trotted over to her and with Ralts, who seemed shy. "So, did you recruit this little one, Pandora?" Camille asked, getting a nod in response. Camille pulled out her Premier Ball, and held it out to Ralts. Ralts hesitantly reached out and touched it, allowing itself to be captured. Once the Ball signalled a successful capture, Camille let Ralts back out, and watched it take up a position on Pandora's back again. With smiles all around, the three started moving again, determined to make a new friend on the way.

Jraken sat in the corner as the young trainers scampered away from the building. He'd been nursing several cups of coffee, showing little interest with the happenings of the young. Instead, he studied what maps were available, noting the terrain and sea level. He'd been jotting notes in a small, leather journal. The journal fit snugly into one of many pockets lining the front of his heavy beige overshirt. By his side was a Delphox who'd been perusing through Cedarwoods documents. Around the Delphox's neck was a thick coller with several buttons and a small green light. A noticible accessory was a similar shackle around Jrakens left leg. He'd tried to conceal it under his sock, but the brace was still obvious.

Jraken says, leaning toward the Delphox; "Ah, here, to the west is a dormant volcanic region. You could get lost there and nobody would have to know." The Delphox was quick to respond by jabbing him in the temple with her stick in obvious agitation and protest. Jraken chuckled, putting the map away before tossing his empty coffee cup to a trash bin several feet away. He missed, but the Delphox used her psychic to put it in the garbage. Jraken responds to the act; "It's still two points..." Afterwords, the two leave the building.

Rather than head to Route Grass the duo headed toward the coast line. Jraken would begin his documentations of the region with the marine life on this side of the region. He didn't have time to be thorough, but he could note the mineral compositions and what wildlife was available from a first glance. The Delphox followed, seeming more like an assistant rather than a Pokemon, though such illusions weren't uncommon among humanoid Pokemon. Still, this Delphox acted in an unusual manner and Jrakens offer for her to "get lost" suggests tension between the two.

Not much information was given to Professor Cedarwood other than Jraken being assigned here through parol. The charges weren't mentioned, stating only that Jraken wasn't a hard criminal or anything of the sort, just that he was an experienced explorer and could better define the region for future travelers and economic growth. However, there was no mention of the Delphox. When asked, Jraken replied; "She's just here to annoy me." A statement which, again, had resulted in a sharp jab to the temple.

What will these explorers find in this new region? Whats with the Delphox's superior attitude and what had Jraken done for parol charges? What are the braces for on Jraken and this Delphox? These questions and more as the journey continues.

OOC: The problem I've seen with open-ended stories is that the participants may know where they want to start and possibly end, yet they are unsure how to get from point A to point B. Some authors get their foot in the door, but quit after the first few steps. There's also possible conflicts with what the GM may have in mind for story direction. Either way, what makes a story with multiple authors so unique is how the sum of the story adapts through the actions of the individuals. This hopefully leaves the audience with a pleasant inability to read into a single authors character and unable to predict the outcome based on historical cliché.

You've made the first steps, but...

Jraken and the Delphox made their way to the coastline. The town they'd left behind was quiet, small, something Jraken seemed to prefer more than the studious Delphox who was currently nose deep in an old paper map. The region was largely unexplored, but an outlining of the land and several towns throughout revealed the travel route settlers must have taken to cross the landmass.

The duo made their way through a small docking yard to the beach below. Jraken inhaled a lungful of sea air, enjoying the atmosphere. The Delphox, however, had begun scanning the beach. Jraken knew she was using her psychic abilities, though he knew not why. Whatever her cause Jraken was more interested in studying the area himself. He starts by leaning down to check the stability of the sand, the texture and color. While he kneels his attention is drawn to the faintly blinking light under his sock, the collar he'd been required to wear as part of his parol.

Jraken stands and looks out to the sea; "You find what you're lookin' for or are you still lookin'?" he asks, the Delphox seemingly ignoring him. Jraken presses the question; "Awful long way to send me with just one of their... Associates. Think you can shed some light on why I'm really here?" The Delphox glances at him for a moment before returning to her scan, replying only by repeating her species name several times. "Yea, I could go for an ice cream too, but that doesn't explain much." His use of humor toward his lack of understanding the Delphox words revealed the anxiety he's trying to hide. Its true he was excited to see this new land, but the invisible tether between the two weighed upon his mind. As well the withheld information he suspected.

The Delphox found it hard to study the land with Jrakens relentless thoughts clouding her vision. The thoughts of a human were rapid, erratic, hard to see clearly and, in this case, hard to ignore. While to anyone else Jraken would seem to be mumbling to himself, trying to study the land if the Delphox wasn't ready to come clean with their true reasons for being here, he may as well been grinding a fork unto a chalk board to the psychic. The words were irritating, more than usual. Her vision became more clouded, the words louder. When it seemed the tension was too much and she tempted to set the man ablaze... She heard it. A second voice, before all went quiet.

When her vision cleared, the voices vanished, she realized she'd drawn her stick, ignited, and pointing at the guarded Jrakens face. Jraken lowers his hands, replying to her actions; "Ok! Ok! No ice cream!" Jraken continued to grin, but he'd noticed the distress in the Delphox's face. What had she'd seen or heard to make her seem so pale? It's like she'd seen a ghost. Changing subject, Jraken suggested they follow the coastline to the next port barely visible in the distance. It'd give him time to document the wildlife and nearby flora. He also preferred if Delphox kept moving to see if it wasn't their current location that seemed be interfering with her psychic abilities.

As the two began their trek down the beach the Delphox, who'd calmed down and put her stick away, reached for a button on her collar while Jrakens back was turned. She pressed it and a nearby, smaller button several times in seemingly random intervals. The light on the collar briefly blinks fast before returning to its normal pace. With that done, she moves on, following Jraken as he jots down notes in his small leather journal.

OOC: Will you follow through or end the journey here?

Lou rushed into the laboratory with her guitar in hand, clearly out of breath. "Hey! Hey! I ain't late, am I?!" Screeching to a halt in front of Professor Cedarwood, she instantly flung the messenger bag hanging from her shoulder around to place her supplies inside. "Map, medkit, booklet thing... hey, nice taste in Poke Balls ya got here!" Her face instantly lit up to learn one of them was a Quick Ball; while she was more focused on catching Poison-types (and was fully prepared to go after a Nidoran), hearing there were Abra on Route Grass meant that she could catch one and dominate Roxie and Nicky with its Psychic-type attacks once she returned to Unova - and it wouldn't be able to teleport away in time.

"Oh, almost forgot... wanna see who I brought with me?" Grabbing a Great Ball from her bag, Lou hurled it up into the air as it released the Pokemon inside in a flash. Before Cedarwood knew it, a giant living pile of sludge - specifically, Muk - stood in front of him. Fortunately, he didn't smell that bad - no worse than the average Unovian train station, at least. Muk let out a loud cry of anticipation, ready to go right out of the gate. And, ever impatient, Lou immediately began running out the door while quickly calling "Alright thanks for the free stuff nice seein' ya bye!" back to the professor. Muk followed close behind, moving along by rolling the sludge making up the bottom of his form against the ground.

Up ahead, she noticed what seemed to be... a Darkrai? Lou cocked an eyebrow in confusion; how would a Darkrai have gotten into the area, and even then, why out in the open in the middle of the day? Maybe we should get a bit closer... then again, that could result in eternal nightmares. Decisions, decisions...

"Find anything, Darkrai?" Kazama inquired to her partner, glancing over at the floating Pokemon. In response, it shook it's head in a no. "Well, that's okay. We'll just keep looking-" She stopped short, feeling something nestle on her shoulder. It was a red and beige-colored Fletchling, and it didn't seem to want to move anytime soon.

"Guess we made our first friend," she commented with a slight chuckle. The Darkrai snorted, presumably out of amusement.

As Lou and Muk trekked down Route Grass, they found that they were being ambushed by surprisingly few Pokemon. Compared to her hometown, where she'd be ambushed by so many Magnemite and Elekid that she was forced to teach Muk Dig to deal with them, Lou found traversing the heavily-wooded route was much less of a chore than she expected.

After a little while, the sound of a small high-pitched creature's cry piqued Muk's interest, as he slithered towards a large, unkempt bush. "What's goin' on over there, Muk?" asked Lou, walking over as well. She opened the bush to reveal a family of Nidoran, male and female, seemingly cowering in fear. It didn't take long for Lou to connect the dots. "Oh. Yeah, that makes sense... Muk, you're scarin' 'em." The Sludge Pokemon rose a hand to his face, shaking the part of his body closest to a head.

Camille and her crew were still walking along when a bush rustled on Pandora's left. Seconds later, a Starly flew out and smacked into the Absol, dazing both. When the Starly came to, it attacked Pandora angrily, triggering a nasty counterattack from the Absol. A barrage of scratches later, Starly was incapacitated. Camille elected to throw her Repeat Ball, not wanting to waste the ones she would actually use. When it clicked, she put it in her bag and they kept walking.

One of the Nidoran - a male, just under two feet tall thanks to his massive ears and with a coat more violet than the lavender of his female counterparts - slowly but surely climbed out of the bush, sniffing the ground as he walked forward until eventually reaching Lou's skate shoe. He looked up at the punk rocker, tilting his head to the side slightly. She didn't seem to be much of a threat after all, and neither did the Muk, who had made some distance in the meantime.

Instinctively closing her thighs - not that the Nidoran would've cared either way - Lou bent down a little and reached her hand out, letting the Poison Pin Pokemon sniff it. "I've, ah... been lookin' out for one of ya," she commented with a little smirk. "You wanna come with?" Nidoran hesitated for a moment before pawing Lou's open palm, releasing another small cry. "Alright, gnarly! Hol' on a minute..." She swung her bag around and rummaged through, pulling out the Premier Ball she obtained from Professor Cedarwood - despite its fancy mostly-white appearance, the model was functionally a clone of your standard Poke Ball. "Might as well getcha into this one so I don't waste any of the others." She held out the ball towards Nidoran, who looked at it for a few seconds before poking the center button with his horn and being warped inside as plasma energy, a less-saturated tone of red than the standard ball. Given there was no struggle, the ball instantly made its always-welcome clicking noise to signal a successful capture.

With that, Lou rose back to a standing position and placed the ball into one of six pockets on the outside of her bag. "Welcome to the team, Nidoran!" greeted the punk rocker, lightly patting the ball as she started walking again with Muk catching up a few seconds later. As they continued on, she mused, "Huh... team... maybe we should give our team a name, Muk. How 'bout... hm... oh, got it! The Virbank Venom! Howsabout it?" Muk chuckled heartily a bit, seeming receptive of the sports team-like moniker. "Alright, great! Hey... maybe we could get some jerseys made if there's a tailor somewhere in this region..."

The Delphox had been taking in the scenery, this having been her first time on a beach. She enjoyed the view, but the the sea myst slightly dampening her fur and the course, loose sand were an annoyance. Jraken had climbed a nearby rock to overlook the ocean with a pair of binoculars. He called for the Delphox; "Hey, check this out!" When the Delphox reached the Jrakens position he handed her the binoculars and pointed to a distant pod of dolphin breaching the surface as they traveled. "Bottlenose Dolphin, probably nearing land after a long trip from the North. Notice how the pod has taken to traveling with several Lanturn?" The Delphox adjusts the sights of the binoculars to get a better view. Jraken continues; "This is a rare example of a symbiotic relationship between Pokemon and animal. The Dolphin accept the Lanturn to better its survival and the Lanturn mimics the pods mannerisms, such as breaching despite being able to breath under water."

The Delphox hands the binoculars back to Jraken, still watching the pod in the distance. Jraken tucks the binoculars in an easily reached pouch on his backpack; "Pokemon are a uniquely adaptable species, not just in the sense of their terrain adaptability, but in they are capable of taking on the nature of other species." Jraken teases the Delphox, patting her on the head despite knowing she disliked this; "Just how Pokemon who hang around people take on human characteristics." The Delphox shrugged away, heading to the streps of the peer. Jraken calls out; "It would be great if you got around to adapting a since of humor, ya know? Just sayin'!"

After reaching the top of the stairs Jraken inquires; "So, what do I call you anyway?" The Delphox points to her collar, knowing the human wouldn't understand Poke-speak. Jraken smirks; "Do you like that name, 'Seven'? Isn't there anything you prefer that sounds better? 'Red', 'Ruby', 'Fire', 'Bob'? Anything?" The Delphox folds her arms, sounding agitated. "Ok, ok, 'Seven' it is. But I'll just call ya Partner, 'kay?" The Delphox didn't seem to mind, which is probably the best response Jraken would get from her. With that, the pair headed toward a nearby shop to examine the wares and foods sold.

While glancing over the merchandise Jraken comments; "You can tell a lot about a new region based on the wares, imports and food available." Seven, though not showing it, understood why Jraken was chosen for this expedition. She knew he was knowledgable in the field, but he possessed a worldly knowledge and acceptance of the unknown she'd not come to expect of her piers. As a Psychic type she'd come to know humans at an animal-level, yet Jraken continues to surprise her.

As they examined the merchandise Seven realized that Jraken had been treating her more like a person than a Pokemon. Though he was goofy and annoying at times it was good to know he held her in this regard. Before the two left the establishment a nearby newspaper catches the Delphox attention. The headline read; "Unknown Creature Terrorizes Countryside". The clipping revealed a blurry photo of a pale, bipedal creature walking away. Jraken comments; "The news is always blowing things out of proportion. It's probably just some territorial Pokemon." When Jraken looked to Seven he noticed the worried look on her face.

Why was Jraken assigned Seven for this expedition and what about this creature has her worried so? These questions and more, as the journey continues.

Lou and Muk continued on, though things had begun to get boring. Not a single wild Pokemon had shown themselves since Nidoran joined the team, leaving the two with next to nothing to do. Eventually, Lou managed to remember that she still had her guitar - which she had been holding over her shoulder the entire way. "Hey, no wonder my shoulder hurt," she quipped, giggling a bit at her own forgetfulness, before putting the strap around her body. Her middle finger then shifted to hover over a tiny device plugged into the guitar jack - it was a small portable amplifier, given to her by Roxie as a birthday gift two years prior. After considering how the nearby fauna - not to mention other trainers around the route - would react to such abrupt noise, the punk rocker decided against it as she took a pick from her bag and began to strum, singing as she did.

"I need an easy friend, I do...
With an ear to lend, I do...
Think you fit this shoe, I do...
But you have a clue...

I'll take advantage while,
You hang me out to dry,
But I can't see you every night, free...
I do..."

As she played the acoustic version of one of her band's mellowest songs, Muk happily bobbing his body around all the while, Lou looked ahead towards the path ahead of them. A few mid-rise brick buildings - presumably part of Go Town, though not unlike Accumula or Striation back in Unova - could be seen a few miles off in the distance... as well as that Darkrai once again. Alongside it walked a small - maybe even moreso than Roxie - black-haired girl, wearing incredibly loose clothing for her size. Huh... so that's who Darkrai's with. Didn't see her on the way here... maybe we should introduce ourselves, say hello. And so, still to the tune of the song, Lou suddenly changed the lyrics to "Hey, girl with that Darkrai, I just... wanted to say hi, I'm Lou..." in an effort to catch her attention. ...Sweet Kyurem, that sucked balls.

@Rolling Girl

Jraken and Seven leave the docks heading toward Go Town. Seven had been analyzing a digital map, adjusting trajectories and pinpointing their location. Jraken held several paper maps, comparing the labeled towns and routes. Seven nudged Jraken, pointing to her digital map. Jraken replied; "Yea, I know that maps up to date, but it can't tell us everything." Jraken held the maps against a tree. "You see the differences in these maps? You can tell one was made before the other because the other has more landmarks. Now, compare these older maps with your digital map." Seven looks to her map, holding it alongside the tree. "You can see how the civilization of this region has expanded, the flow of human progress. For generations it's been in human ingenuity to build from two separate points inward, then to expand outward." Jraken trails his finger over two separate points in the region. "This tells us which parts of the region are likely uncharted. If we want to better understand the wildlife and terrain we'll have to go here." Jraken trails his finger from the central connecting point of the routes outwards.

Jraken folds the maps and places them in one of his vest pockets. "The next town is Go Town. We'll be able to stock up on supplies before heading out. Those young'uns from earlier will probably be there by the time we make it." Seven puts the digital map in Jrakens backpack. Jraken comments, seeing several Rattatta stroll into a bush; "With the docile critters in the area the young'uns must have caught at least one along the way. We should be able to see how healthy the diet of this area is by examining them."

As the two head to Go Town Seven reaches for her collar, pressing the buttons in a pattern which resulted in the quickening blink of the light on her collar. She'd been communicating with someone without Jrakens knowledge, but who and for what purpose? Find out, as the journey continues.

OOC: Just because it's fantasy it doesn't mean we can't learn from it. Odd how sometimes our characters can teach us something new as we write for them. I honestly didn't know the map-thing before thinking 'What would Jraken do?'" :sweatlol:

"Hm?" Kazama turned, the oddly colored Fletchling on her shoulder giving a slight protest of discomfort. It didn't take long for her to realize Lou was talking to her; she cursed her lack of awareness and offered a faint smile.

"Ah, hello there. It's nice to meet you, Lou.. Please, call me Kazama, if you would." The raven haired girl then gestured to her floating partner, who gave a slight scoff - but, nonetheless, gave the slightest nod to the guitarist. "And this is my moody partner, Darkrai." As if to deny that, the Pitch Black Pokemon turned away and crossed its arms. This only served to elicit a chuckle from the undersized teenager.

"Kazama... are you Kantoese, by any chance?" Lou looked towards Darkrai and waved, then towards the Fletchling on the girl's shoulder. "Hey, 'bout an hour in and you've already got a shiny. Nice job. As you can see, this is Muk..." The Sludge Pokemon rose a gooey arm, waving while trying his best not to fling sludge around. Lou then grabbed the Premier Ball and dropped it onto the ground, revealing Nidoran in a flash. "...and this is Nidoran! He's pretty new, so he's kinda weary of a lot of things." Sure enough, Nidoran took one look at Darkrai and nervously backed up a few steps.

To save him the trouble, Lou recalled Nidoran and turned back to Darkrai. "Hey, ah... sorry 'bout that. It ain't every day you see one of you... how'd you two manage to meet, anyway? Like, I met Muk as a Grimer when I stepped in him and my feet got stuck." Muk chuckled a bit at this, while the guitarist merely rolled her eyes as she sat cross-legged on the grass, gesturing for Kazama to do the same before retrieving a bag of Bacon Ranch-flavored chips from her messenger bag.

OOC: Bacon Ranch chips do exist. They're sold under the T.G.I. Friday's brand as being based on their potato skins. I've only seen them in vending machines at my school, but I'm sure they sell 'em in Virbank.

"No, I'm from Hoenn." She corrected with a wry smile, sitting down on the grass besides Lou. "Well, to be honest, I'm not all that sure. Darkrai found me on a boat, and never would leave me alone, so we kinda stuck together ever since."

The Darkrai also took a seat, extending two stilt-like appendages from its torso as it carefully lowered itself to the ground; finally settling down on the grass, the Dark-type's pitch black appendages retreated back into the ripped, cloak-like abdomen.

Jraken and Seven make their way into town. Go Town was rather small, tucked away in the corner of the region. With beach port access and a field of docile Pokemon it was no wonder that Ceaderwood would establish a lab for budding trainers here. Jraken enjoyed the sleepy feel of the town, made prominent by a Purugly lazily napping atop a fence post. Jraken scratched the Puruglys head, yet it was determined not to move from its comfortable position. It wasn't long before Jraken came across two of the trainers he'd seen earlier back at the lab.

Jraken waved to Kazama and Lou as he approached. The normally tall Delphox by his side seemed dwarfed by the height of the man. Seven had been studying her map again, inputting trajectories as well as the information Jraken had mentioned about the flow of civilization and the direction wild Pokemon would move. Jraken approached the two; "Good evening! I hope I'm not interrupting anything. The two of you were at Ceaderwoods lab earlier, correct?" Jraken tips his dusty old hat; "Tha names Jraken Tregres and I'm doing a study of the flora and fauna of the region." Jraken places a hand on Sevens head. "And this is Bob." Jraken was immediately jabbed in the temple by the Delphoxs stick. "Ooch... I mean, 'Seven'." The Delphox returns to her work as Jraken rubs his sore head. "I was wondering, have either of you caught any Pokemon from the area? I'm interested in documenting their physical health before it changes too much."

Seven looks up from her map to see the Muk in the group. The Delphox reacts with a distrustful sneer at the poisonous blob. Jraken places his hand on her shoulder; "Really gotta work on your people skills partner." Seven angrily shrugs Jrakens hand away before stepping behind him to continue her map work. Jraken apologizes for her actions, not sure what had come over her.
