I was discussing this with Chaos:

Which is better for society: Punishing criminals or rehabiliting them?

There's no reason to punish them other than to satisfy your own urge for revenge. All it does it mess them up worse for when they get let back into society, then they commit more crimes and that's just bad for everyone. Obviously it would be most beneficial to society to actually rehabilitate them so they get better and have a chance at becoming a productive member of society.

I was under the impression that the point of jail was to make society safer by keeping dangerous people off the streets. Though I think of course jail should be unpleasant to discourage people from doing dangerous things.

I really cant make up my mind right now, Some crimes should definately be punished, Liked if some robs a bank how are you going to cure them? I can see most murderers being able to be rehabilitated, because it could be a psychological thing. However if someone robs to feed their family, ect. how is that to be rehabilitated? Right now just concider me impartial, because really it could go either way.

Both. I would support the majority of a sentence (60-70%) be served as slave labor to the state with the remainder used to rehabilitate. This isn't a set rule, so obviously special cases could change those numbers.

Yeah slave labor sure is helpful, don't pay them anything so that they'll have nothing when they get out and be forced to go back to a life of crime since they'll have no way to support themselves, that sure helps society.

What's better is knowing that if i want to rape that cute 12 year old across the street, you won't punish me, just "treat" me and release me when i'm "better"

I already said I don't think sex offenders ought to ever be released. But assuming they are to be released...yeah I'm sure the way they get raped in jail makes them MUCH LESS LIKELY to rape more people when they get out. Jail just makes people angry and tougher and even more mentally messed up than when they went in, and then they're released.

Also I think if you're the type of person who would rape a 12 year old, you're probably beyond being able to think ahead about consequences. Your only real argument for punishment seems to be as a deterrent, I'd like to see some studies showing that the prospect of harsh punishment actually does lower the crime rate. The last I checked, countries with like unthinkably horrible punishments still had a lot of crime.

Also like I said before, it's not like being locked up in a mental hospital for years isn't a punishment at all, you still lose your freedom. Would YOU like to be locked in a mental hospital for years? That wouldn't be any kind of deterrent for you? I mean I'd still have a minimum sentence in the mental hospital for crimes, and then *after* the min sentence was served, they'd determine if they're better or if they need to stay longer.

Who said we weren't going to give them some money when they get out? Strawman fails again.
