Couldn't think of a better title. But anyway, I was checking CNN.com and came across this story.

Essentially, a group of conservationists and scientists are proposing that we should take endangered species from Africa and transplant them to the Great Plains of North America. Not in zoos, but in the wild. The idea is that it would recreate their own habitat and allow these endangered species to well, do what they're being paid to do, while bringing that part of America back to its pre-human animal diversit (although with new and improved models, instead of the ones that actually roamed the Plains).

This has stirred a HUGE storm of debate. Parts of Africa are afraid it will hurt their economy. Ranchers in America fear what lions would do to their livestock. Other conservationists wonder why we're trying to help animals that were never native to the region, when we could just as easily put a huge effort into helping the ones that ARE native to the region.

Personally, I'm conflicted. Part of me sees the value in this and wants to support it. But the other part of me wonders why we can't just help the animals that are already here. But then, another part of me thinks it would be cool to see an elephant around here. It would certainly spice things up.
