How the heck does a fish evolve into a Octopus?!?!?

Seriously... It makes no sense.

A fish should evolve into a bigger fish, not an Octopus that looks nothing like it!
 
It's Pokémon, it doesn't have to make sense.
 
Yeah, I don't get that either.

There are some others, too. For example, WTF is Pupitar supposed to be? Why does it look absolutely nothing like Larvitar and Tyrannitar?
 
Carnavah to Sharpedo, not as strange but Pirahna's aren't Sharks..

Right no but a small turtle(Squirtle) grows up being a giant tortoise with cannons in its shell(Blastoise).

There is no point in trying to put logic into fiction.
 
Not everything makes sense in Pokemon. Feebas into Milotic is another example of an evolution that doesn't make sense.
 
not that it fully makes sense but:
remoraid = handgun
octillary = cannon

still they could have picked some kind of big cannon fish, like a basking shark or made remoraid into a little cuttlefish or something

Because it's in a pupal stage? Not like Metapod or Silcoon look anything like its pre-evolution and evolution, or for real life examples, anything that pupates.
 
I never got Remoraid to Octillery either. But it would be hard to think of evolutions for them

Remoraid, to me, is based on a small gun and Octillery is a cannon. They probably shouldn't have weapon references in a childrens game but still...
 
With pokemon, if you don't understand something, read the bulbawiki page about the pokemon and maybe its name origins can shed some light on the subject. I have always found that useful ome to think of it, it answers this:

Magikarp is based on a legend about how carp that leapt over the Dragon Gate would become dragons. Several waterfalls and cataracts in China are believed to be the location of the Dragon Gate. This legend is an allegory of the drive and efforts needed to overcome obstacles.

If you read these parts on the origns of the pokemon design or name, most pokemon that didn't seem to make sense, now usually do.

Not if they're in the form of cute aquatic fantasy creatures!

I personally never got Trapinch. I can see Vibrava to Flygon, but Trapinch just doesn't seem to fit in with either of them.
 
Bwhahahaha, that was my exact thought when I was going over the dex and saw that for the first time. I mean, usually evolutions make some sense. And I let ones like Cubone/Marowak, Kangaskhan, and Shedinja get by because, well, whatever. But fish into octopus just blew me away.

Since some of the Pokemon are based from real life creatures and whatnot, and being a nature freak, I recognize Trapinch as the equivalent of the antlion's larval stage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Antlion_life_cycle.svg)

So knowing that, it makes perfect sense =]
