As impressed as I was with gen 4, I was kind of disappointed with diamond. I only got three and a half months out of it, including going crazy at the battle tower. Still, would not trade it for the world.

More like, after e4 play value. I find it OK, but they tried adding too much to it, with Heatran, cress, Darkrai, Shaymin, the birds, etc. Sure, you've gotsomething to do, but after you beat the game, A couple legendaries and beating the evil team a couple times is all I want, then I want to start breeding a good team and go BT crazy.

The Battle Tower is stupid, I like to battle only to get exp for my Pokemon but there you can't. So I just stopped seriously playing after I beat the elite four a dozen or so times.

Battle tower and stuff is only to practice to perfection..
and about adding too much to it????????
I mean what???
if thats too much.. then wait for HG/SS.. You'll be calling that too much...
I mean 16 badges 8 or 6 legendaries!!!

The replay value of D/P gets a bit redundant after a while, but I don't know why. Maybe because of the lack of things to do after the end credits (other than the Battle Tower)?

Battle Tower and the whole Battle Frontier are the most difficult and challenging PvE areas of the game, due to high computer AI, ban of battle-time items, and (at least almost) matching levels. I'd like Battle Frontier if I didn't lose there all the time ;D

GameFreak try to extend the play time with the Battle Frontier... They did it alright in D/P/P but I didn't like the original Battle Frontier much, then again I haven't played Emerald in ages.

GameFreak really need to find a good way of extending the play time- because of almost everyone, once you beat the Champion... Aside from catching a few Legendaries, what else is there to do?

The only problems is that some pokemon does very stupid moves at certain times:

When you have pokemon whit an ability that makes you neutral to a certain type they don't recognize it;
I had a Vaporeon and the enemy Empoleon just continued spaming Waterfalls.
I had a Electrive, and the enemy Amparos couldn't stop sapming Thunderbolts.

If your pokemon have low HP, but are quite fast they seems to be programed to use a priority move, even Fake Out, so they use it without effect so often.

When they can KO your last pokemon they set up Reflect/other status moves.

They use Baton Pass to switch to a pokemon that are KO'd by your move.

But all in all it's a great place for testing out pokemon off-line.

And what replay value is concerned I think it much more fun replaying Ruby or FireRed than DPPt

At least for me, that happens only on like first seven or fourteen battles. After that, they knock me down mercilessly. :/

It had more replay value than Gen I, less than Gen II. About on Par with Gen III IMO. Gen II had more to explore and a whole second region built in, Gen III was just big overall like this game but with not a LOT to keep you playing, and Gen I just kind of felt like "You win. Go buy a link cable."

Built in random wifi is what all the handheld titles really need, endless replay value right there.

Well, I'm using my Pearl to level up my Platinum team by battling the Elite Four. So, yeah, I find things to do. Only boring people get bored.

Kanto is part of the main story in GSC -for me, at least-, so I don't think that counts really as "replay value". And in the case you don't agree with my views, what can you do in GSC/HGSS after you beat Green and challenge Red in Mt. Silver that is so different from Generation III (mainly Emerald) and IV games?
For starters, the Hoenn Battle Frontier has more facilities than any other and is a little bit harder, let alone that isn't just a copy-pasted job from another title like the HGSS one. GSC and HGSS have quite a good number of areas to explore because there are two regions, but after you beat Red and collect all the items there isn't much to do aside from using the PokéGear to rematch trainers and catching Pokémon you don't own or lack a Pokédex entry, which is also the case with RSE -Match Call- and DPt -Vs. Seeker-. I don't want to even mention other things because almost every feature is equally included and highlighted in each version, like growing berries, PokéBlocks/Poffins (Aprishakes are a joke), getting accessories and so. Having more areas to visit but nothing else to do in/with them != actual replay value.

In the end, what really suits the definition of replay value vary from person to person: either that you choose to train Pokémon for Contests, Pokéathlons, battles with friends, want to get all the Secret Base decorations, all the accessories, all the Trainer Card stars, filling all the gender/forms/Formes/weather changes/Unown shapes/cloak/foreign entry differences of the Pokédex, every possible Ribbon on your Pokémon, a high streak in any mode and facility of the Battle Tower/Frontier, a high overall score, all the event Pokémon, all the Dowsing Machine hidden items or having a collection of every berry/battle item/TM, etc., you are contributing and shaping your very own sense of replay value.

I find the total duration of all pokemon games being:
1-finish the game
2-do side quests /try to complete the pokedex until you get bored
3-drop the game for a few months/years
4-restart the game.

Its perfect, you can replay blue/green or even Diamond/pearl/platinum for years, and it never gets old, becouse each course would be different and its and endless cycle.

I'm sorry, I think we're talking about different definitions here. I mean replay value as in a REASON to REPLAY the game. Delete everything, start all over. I feel like I have more to accomplish, where Red/Blue have blunt endings to work towards and RSE... well, I haven't played them in long enough to comment.

Replay Value means how much reason you have to replay (aka play again) the game. You're talking about game length, which includes Kanto in GSC. GSC had two full regions (well, if the old Kanto counts) and feels like it's more fun to play through again because of it. More variety.

Actually, both of our views about what better defines replay value are different, specifically speaking about the Pokémon games. Playing again the whole story (restart your save file) is by not means what I guessed, and I would not do it unless I had a different version because I would find it a little stale and boring, or perhaps I'd hate to lose my records.
Also, you wrote about game length, a feature I think is inherent to your definition of replay value (more variety and more things to do go together).

Well, going by what I think we now agree on as a definition, I agree with all your points. And I don't like restarting a game all over either, but I took that to be the topic at hand. My mistake.
