I think a reputation system would do well here, let it be attached to a post (like this post) or a user. It would let users know what posts/users actually contribute well, and not those who just spam up the "World Beyond" section like many with over 2K posts.

Not only that, but users with high rep could access areas others could not, as an incentive to contribute.

This site has a nice rep system. http://www.janime.eu/forum.php

From the previous thread about this:
And sometimes I just feel like hitting the negative button just to be a douche.

I think this sums up where we are on the idea of a rep system quite nicely, actually. It's good...and bad.

Adding, we used to have one, and the technology is certainly there, but we see it as open to abuse.

We had one on Warriors Saga. I had a really low rating.

...

It's not a good idea. And it means nothing anyways.

Take away the negative then. Or at least put a "thanks" on post that users found helpful.

Thanks for the speedy response.

It's still open for abuse.

Even a "thanks" on the post?

Perhaps if I explain a bit more. To up rep, you only are allowed once on one user within an amount of time. Then you have to wait to give to that user again. I do not see how something like that with restrictions is up for abuse. I usually find myself ready to up rep when I find out I already gave recently.

But people aren't necessarily as generous as you. And as for a "thanks" system for users, well...you can say thanks.

I don't see how this forum is any worse without a reputation system. I can think of many ways in which the use of a reputation system will become a proxy for giving favors to friends or blocking out certain users from reputation. So we aren't going to implement one.

Thanks for taking on my request and not just passing it off. To be honest, I didn't expect it to get implemented, but I expect it to brew up ideas of other ways to help out the forum that I am unaware of. Hope it did or will lead to ideas to come.

PS: As your username is both bold and italics, does that indicate you are the admin?

In another forum I am (vBulletin too) has a pretty good reputation system, I'll explain:
Under each post (on the part that has your username, avatar and stuff) there is like a balance. You click on it if you want. And you say, for example: "Quite right. Nice thread" or whatever. And it would give points, and every 60 or so, you get a green button that shows your reputation level. Everyone has ONE at the beginning. And as you get more reputation, you get more squares.
And you can't give more than 3 reputations in 24 hours And you can't give to the same person in a row.

So, you can't give a negative reputation. It's: or you give good, or you give nothing.

I disagree, how do we know who to trust trade-wise if we're new to the forum? Rep

There's still the problem of people being honest about it.

One way a system like this might work is that people with higher reputations have a larger impact on the overall score of the user that they're repping. But that still has potential for abuse.

Wouldn't that just start fights? I saw it at another forum. "Why does HE have more RP than me? That's not fair! asdf"

A rep system would just turn into nothing more than a glorified popularity contest.
