I haven't really been around, and don't know if this was discussed, but:
Is there a chance that Gliscor's late exit was a result of fans' rather critical reaction of him the entire time? I mean, was there any out-of-anime explanation given to this occurence? It just seems sort of random that they'd do it at such a time. I know the anime is subject to much-needed surprises and change, but characters are typically implemented and dealt lengthy development so that fans may attach themselves to them, not so that they could act as filler until a late-game switch up. Just curious as to your thoughts.
Oh, and...
"If that were the case...
Brock would be gone
Misty would return
Dawn would be gone
Dawn would be mained
Ash would be gone"
etc...
There, I've knocked all those silly statements out of the way.
