I hate to admit it...but I've finally started playing my first Poke-game since Pokemon Silver, having bought a DS with xmas money. Lack of money has kept me out of the loop (so to speak) till now haha. Takes a bit of getting used to :p Any advice?

Welcome back!
Lol.
Well, some tips I could give is, just enjoy the game. I see to many people not enjoying the game by focusing on the business side. (Shiny Pokes, Bred Pokes, and all that jazz) Play the game first, then do all that other stuff after :p.
This is my personal take on it btw.
Enjoy~

Thanks.

This is really good advice. Honestly, when a game stops being fun and starts being work, that's when you should just quit. But I digress...

I suggest buying a Third Gen game since you can't transfer Pokemon from Red/Blue/Yellow or Gold/Silver/Crystal. If you want to catch the Pokemon introduced in Gen III, I recommend Emerald. If you want to catch Pokemon from Gens I & II, buy FireRed/LeafGreen. As for Gen IV, Platinum is by far the best game out in English at the moment, but if you want to wait until the release of the Gold/Silver remakes, I recommend them too.

Also, keep in mind that in Gen IV, attacks are categorized as physical or special, not by type, but by how directly they connect to the target (Leaf Blade is physical while Solarbeam is special, for example)

Above all, you should follow Chebon's advice and have fun with it. It is a game after all.

Just as Envoy said, Once the game starts to become work, you should quit...
But, that doesn't mean you can't have fun while working. If you're having fun and working, there's no issue. :p

Also, just as Envoy mentioned, get an older game if you wish to complete or want to have a variety of pokes to choose from. The games should be a little cheap by now. If you need any help/pokemon, you can ask me.

Later and GL.
-and have fun aha

Well...had I read that before I had gone out to buy it I would've bought a Gen III game, as it stands though I've got Platinum. I'm getting used to it, made the typical mistake of picking fire as my starter when I knew the first gym was rock  Oh well, I'll get the hang of it eventually. And I can say for certain I'm having fun :)

Don't worry, there's always time. Or as Envoy mentioned, you can wait for HgSs in March. Also, no pokemon is a mistake lol. Every pokemon has a weakness, as you know. Chimchar's time to shine will come soon :p

Yeah, I got back into the games with Platinum quite recently. And went for Chimchar! Fire's awesome!

The hardest bit for me was making sense of the new types. Dark? Steel? What are these strange anomalies? And why are ghosts suddenly hurting my Psychic Pokémon, who are immune to Ghost? Takes a bit of getting used to...

Welcome to Gen II :p

Haha, I started with gold, so this was all given to me. I couldn't imagine a psychic type hurting my ghosts. lol.

Take it slow. Don't rush it.

Enjoy it as if you were a kid. It's a game. Not anything else.

Welcome back! I too returned in 2007, and my last game before then was Gold (D/P was already out for about 6 months at this point). Pokemon's a good time.

At least I know I'm not alone here~ I started with Red way back when it first came out, played with Silver when that was out, lost interest for a few years (and missed Gen III . . . now one of my favorites), came back to preorder Diamond after I got my DS (thus my Pokefandom was rekindled~ . . . I got Pearl later) . . . leading me back into Ruby, FireRed and Emerald, and currently Platinum.

But everyone's right. Enjoy the game and have fun with it. I agree that Platinum's probably the best for the DS at the moment (probably until HGSS comes out), but a game or two in Gen III (I suggest Emerald or either FR/LG) will only add to the fun. I play back and forth with my GBA games and DS games constantly, and I find it makes it a lot more memorable.

Good luck on your return to the games! I hope you have a lot of fun with them, whichever game you choose!

I think the most important part is to have fun. That's what it's all about. Sure, there are all these other functions that were added for the more serious players, but if you're just coming back, the important part is having fun. If you find yourself not having fun, set the game down and come back to it later.

At least by picking Chimchar you'll actually have a Fire type, since there's a serious lack of them in D/P before the E4.

You wanted advice? Since you said you're playing Platinum, don't get rid of any colored Shards or Star Pieces that you find. The Shards are used to pay for move tutors that teach an array of great moves. Mr. Fuego in the Fuego Ironworks will give you one of each color Shard for every Star Piece you bring him. Use your Dowsing Machine (the new Itemfinder) frequently when you get it, you can find some Shards that way. You can also find them in the Underground, and there's a guy near the entrance to the Great Marsh (after you go in) who gives you a random Shard every day.

Bane is just like me! I took a break from Pokemon after GenII, and only got back into it once GenIV got closer to dropping. Anyways, like everyone said, I'd try starting off with a GenIII game, and then moving onto GenIV once you've gotten used to some of the new mechanics. I personally started off with LeafGreen and then moved onto Platinum.

I wouldn't bank on that. I tried getting a copy of Emerald for my cousin, and it was a huge pain in the ass. You pretty much can't find them new anymore unless you go on internet sites, and second-hand stores like GameStop and Play 'n Trade price them according to demand, so all the GenIII games were about $40. Fortunately, I have a hook-up at my local place, and was able to get it half-off. Then, I had to exchange the cart for a new one twice, because they kept giving me bum carts that either wouldn't show up on my DS Lite's start-up menu, or it did, but froze up or something.

I actually beat Roark with one level 15 Monferno, just by spamming Mach Punch over and over again

Oh really?
The games are still at that price? Wow.
I thought they lowered them at least by $20.
Kinda shocking.
