Review League: Season 0

image ID: A Shauntal from BW is back and ready to read!

Welcome back to Review League, an ongoing event meant to encourage a lively community of writers and readers on the Bulbagarden Forums! For those who don't know, the Review League is a game where you can collect points for leaving reviews on fic in the Writers' Workshop. The basic guidelines are as follows:

1) Review any story posted in the Bulbagarden Library subforum of the Writers' Workshop. If you comment on multiple chapters in one review, please point out in the review exactly which chapters you comment on.
2) Post the link to your review in this thread to have it logged. You don't have to post immediately, though we'd prefer that you post no more than four at once; bear in mind that you may only claim seasonal points on reviews logged in the same season that they were posted in! Please use the following format for logging reviews (or include all of the information):
Link: [Link to Review, Fic Title]
Chapters: [disclose the number of chapters reviewed]
Bonuses: [list the bonuses you are claiming; refer to following post]
Words Written: [list the word count of your review]
Words Read: [list the cumulative word count of the fic you read]
3) Based on the guidelines below, calculate how many points you've earned with your review(s). It helps to say what criteria earned you the amount of points you calculated, but it's not required. If you're new and unsure how this works, please ask!
4) Check out your points on the ladder here, and then exchange your points for cool prizes!

We'll be trialing a major change from previous Review Leagues: Seasons! Every six months, the Review League will get a new facelift: this means new seasonal prizes, new ways to earn points, and new ways to spend points! The current Season is: Season 0, and will end in six months, on February 28th 2026 at midnight! Note that this Season will be running a bit long to give folks the chance to get into the swing of things; future Seasons will be 6 months long.

How to Earn Points

You can see how many points you have here! For the purposes of Review League, a review is defined as 100 or more words. You can determine how many points your reviews are worth using the following criteria:
Baseline Points
  • Every review logged nets you 1 point.
  • For each additional chapter discussed in a review after the first, you earn 1 additional point.
    • In order to receive this bonus, you must write an average of 100 words for each chapter that you are claiming, and the average wordcount of each chapter must exceed 1,000 words. You are free to review more chapters, but they will not receive bonus points.
  • For every 250 words put into a review, you receive 1 additional point.
    • If an author replies to your review and you continue to post and discuss their fic with them, you can add the discussion posts toward your word count. You would not get base points or any other additional points for replies, just word count points. Please don't write words just to inflate the word count. Your reviews should have some substance to them.
Bonus Points!
  • For reviews of fics submitted to select contests in the Writers' Workshop, you receive 1 additional point.
    • Current eligible contests: Spring 2025 Shipping
  • For first reviews of a chapter or oneshot, you receive 1 additional point.
  • For every 5,000 words read in the season, you receive 1 additional point. This is cumulative across all of your reading for the season.
  • For chapters or oneshots that are greater than 5,000 words in length, you receive 1 additional point.

Seasonal Points!! - Season 0, Bulba Bookworm!

A special badge redeemed by participants in our Writers' Workshop's fanfiction Review League for a large amount of points. The badge is blue-lined with a white background, reminiscent of a leaf of paper, has five black stars at the bottom, and says 'Bulba Bookworm'. A Wurmple is shown at the bottom left.

Have a fic that's left you at a lost for words? This Season, we'll be trying out a new method of earning points: comments! A comment is defined as a post on a story that meets one or more of the following criteria:
  • The post is less than 100 words.
  • The oneshot or chapter being commented on is less than 1,000 words.
  • The post is submitted as part of a beta readingfor a oneshot or chapter.
    • Tag the author whose work you beta'd, and ask them to react to your post. You do not need to post additional proof, though this will be assessed on the honor system. You're also welcome to reformat your beta into a review and post/claim it as a review instead.
In the interest of keeping things fair to authors, comments must still discuss three specific things about the oneshot or chapter that you are commenting on. We reserve the right to reject comments that are too generic or do not engage with the story.

Comments will be rewarded as a flat +1 point, but are ineligible for additional bonuses.

How to Spend Points

You can see how many points you can spend here! There are now two points shops: the Seasonal Points Shop and the Lifetime Points Shop. You can accumulate Seasonal Points during a given Season; at the end of each Season, all unspent Seasonal Points are converted to Lifetime Points, so keep an eye out! You can also choose to convert you Seasonal Points to Lifetime Points at any time, if you so desire.

Reviews
You can exchange your Seasonal Points for reviews, provided by our friendly Workshop staff! These reviews can be on your story or another story (if you have the author's permission). This Season, we're tracking review prizes by wordcount: across a Season, you can add up the total wordcount of all of the fics you've requested to get reviewed that Season, which yields your Seasonal Prize Wordcount.
Seasonal Prize WordcountSeasonal Points Cost per 1,000 words reviewed
0 - 4,000 words1
4,000 - 10,000 words2
10,000 - 20,000 words3
20,000 - 50,000 words5
50,000 words+6
This number adds, but is calculated live: for example, if you request reviews for Oneshot 1 (2,000 words) and Oneshot 2 (2,000 words), this will cost the same as requesting a review for Oneshot 3 (4,000 words)--4 points.

Please reach out to staff if you're unsure how the math on your points works!

Art
Art's back on the menu again, with thanks to our lovely friends over in the Artist Gallery! Do note that you will only be able to claim a certain amount of Art prizes per Season using your Seasonal Points (though you can always convert your Seasonal Points to Lifetime Points, and claim at the Lifetime Shop instead, which does not have this restriction).

Art is a little harder to quantify, so in some cases we may adjust points costs based on the request--for example, a piece done in a style like a Sketch with 3 characters would be possible, but would just cost slightly more. If you're unsure, please feel free to reach out!

Conlang - 80 Seasonal Points
Resident conlang nerd @Welkamo will make you a constructed language, including the phonology (sounds or other equivalent for cases like sign language), grammar, writing system, a short dictionary of words, and means of creating new words with the Zompist Word Generator. Glossary, FAQ, and Changelog

Reviews are defined as posts that meet all of the following criteria:
  • Posts made within the Bulbagarden Library on a oneshot or chapter that you did not author or co-author.
    • Reviews are defined as an individual post. A post may not contain multiple reviews, and a review may not span multiple posts.
  • Reviews must be greater than 100 words, as determined by this word counter.
    • Quoted text (i.e. sections from the story you are reviewing) do not count towards your word count.
    • If an author replies to your review and you continue to post and discuss their fic with them, you can add the discussion posts toward your word count. You will not get any additional bonus points for your replies beyond the word count.
Chapters are defined as posts that meet all of the following criteria:
  • Posts made as part of a story by the author or co-author of a thread within the Bulbagarden Library.
    • April Fool's or other joke chapters qualify, assuming they meet all other requirements. Metatextual elements such as table of contents, author's notes, etc. do not.
  • Chapters must be on Bulbagarden. For example, if a story has 18 chapters, the first 2 of which are on Bulbagarden, and the following 16 of which are hosted offsite, only the 2 hosted on Bulbagarden are eligible for reviews.
    • In other words, reviews for chapters not posted on Bulbagarden are not eligible for Review League.
  • Chapters are typically individual posts. A chapter may not span multiple posts, but in the event that an author has designated multiple chapters within a single post, then multiple chapters may be within a post.
  • Chapters that are less than 1,000 words in length are not eligible for review points, but are eligible for comment points.
Oneshots are defined as singular chapters (see above) that are a completed story.
The new Review League has 6 month seasons, during which we have new seasonal prizes and ways to score points. The current Season is Season 0, and has been extended--this means that we're considering the start of Season 0 as August 7, 2023, or the start of Review League 2.

Seasonal Points can only be earned on reviews/comments that are 1) posted and 2) logged within that Season. Otherwise, they will be counted as Lifetime points instead.
Martian (endonym Krízoído, lit. "red language")
The Language of Martians (Rhythm Heaven)
Phonology
p bt dk g
vs zʐx ɣʕ h
mnŋɴ
l
wɹɻ
ɓɗɠ

i yu
e øo
aɑ

Martian has three tones, plus a neutral tone: the high tone /˥/ (written with a macron over the vowel, ex. ā), the rising tone /˧˥/ (written with an acute accent over the vowel, ex. á), and the falling tone /˥˧/ (written with a grave accent over the vowel, ex. à). Typically, the high tone must be preceded by a rising tone and followed by a falling tone, if applicable, although there are exceptions, typically for monosyllabic words. A falling tone cannot following a falling tone, and a rising tone cannot follow a rising tone, and instead the second tone must be reversed:
  • hivirpó, ídotami to have, language
  • hivirpó ìdotami to have one language

Grammar
Martian follows a Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) sentence structure.

Additives (known in Martian as “ikarde”) serve as both adjectives and adverbs, depending on whether they come after a noun or a verb, respectively. Example:

Omzí zeri anzerpó. - “The bright sun shines.”
Omzí anzerpó zeri. - “The sun shines brightly.”

All additives end in "a", though not all additives ending in "a" are adjectives.

All verbs end in either -pó or -bó. The gerund is formed by replacing the ending with -pi or -bio, respectively. There are two irregular verbs: irpó/iro (to go/travelling) and karpó/karo (to be able to/capability). There is no other inflection in Martian. Tense, aspect, and mood are all expressed in auxiliary verbs and particles.

Adpositions come before their complement (prepositions).

Nouns distinguish between general and singulative:

man - “human(s)” (general)
mantami - “human” (singulative)

The singulative is marked by adding -tami to the end of a noun.

Martian is fluid in capitalizing proper nouns; proper nouns can be capitalized, and are required to be in formal settings, but oftentimes in casual settings they’re not.

Writing System
Martian has no native written script, instead adapting the Latin script and the Cyrillic script, in a phenomenon known as synchronic digraphia.

Seasonal Points!! - Season 0, Bulba Bookworm!

The current Season is: Season 0, and will end in six months, on February 28th 2026 at midnight! Note that this Season will be running a bit long to give folks the chance to get into the swing of things; future Seasons will be 6 months long.

Wordcount of quoted text from the story doesn't count towards your review wordcount--the easiest way I've found to gather wordcount without quotes is just to hit reply to your own quote; the resulting post will not contain nested quotes and as such will only contain the words that you've written. I got 622 for you from that instead, so 4 points here, and then the +1 to your overall words read bonus (nice work so far!).

Just a heads up, I'm also revising your previous log:
Coltar: Together
Chapters: 1
Bonuses: First Review of a Oneshot. Word count of 846/250
Word Count: 846
Words Read: 2,759

If I did my math right, this is +5 points. Please check after me!
as it has 536 points without the quoted text, bringing you to +4 total for that one.

great work!! you're killing it.

Adding this one for myself to the tracker:
transient shelter from the storm
Chapters: 4
Bonuses: First review of chapters 1-4
Word count: 578
Words read: 9500 (undershot)

Alright. It's been a while since I've spent my points. I think I'd like to spend my seasonal points on spot art please.
hecc yeah! reached out to you in PM.

I'M RICH AGAIN. Well, I'll have to think about cashing out some of those lifetime points eventually, but for now, let's return:

One of Toron's Ficlets
- Base: 1pt

And the chapter is just under the 1000 word count so that's it, nothing else. Well, it's a small first step at least.
welcome! logged~

Got me a hot new couple of reviews for my first entry in the fresh new review club! :ayeaye:

Gray Unova
Chapters:
1 & 2 (+2 pts)
Bonuses: 1st review of Chapter 2 (+1 pt)
Words Written: 754 + 146 (2nd reply) = 900 + 376 = 1,276 (+5 pts)
Words Read: 3,402 [Ch.1] + 2,556 [Ch.2] = 5,958 (+1 pt)

Total: +9 pts

I kept track of everything scoring-wise that I could, so I'm pretty sure this total is correct, but please lmk if I'm wrong.

[Edit] They're not in the same review, so I assume I don't qualify for the extra point for "each additional chapter discussed in a review after the first," but if I do, then the total is 10 points.

On technicality I think this is actually worth 8 (as your 900 point review is +3 and your 376 one is +1), but in this case I agree the overspill is kind of silly/hard to define, so I logged this one as +9 here.

As you noted, we did tweak the points scoring for "each additional chapter" to make it so that you should get ~the same points for if you log reviews separately or together, but the running wordcount remains complex to define, sorry about that!! If this keeps coming up I'll see if we can patch it out somehow, though the behind the scenes math is kind of daunting ...

also logged Light in the Darkness (285 words, first, 3883 words read) for myself!

Augh, I didn't think about that! My bad :bulbaFacepalm:

I think I understand the mixup. Running word count is cumulative over the season and earns a point every 5,000 words read, but the review word count only adds up for extra points per review, not for multiple reviews posted at once, or seasonal word count for reviews since that's not being tracked.

Does that sound right?

yup, that's correct! I think in the future we'd handle it the way you'd provide and just do a seasonal word count for reviews--I think it'd just be a little more confusing for people to keep track of on their end, but the spreadsheet math could handle it pretty easily! so you might not know your direct score at any given point, but it'd be visible live in the ladder.

(open to your opinion re: ease of tracking here; there's not a ton of users so everyone's vote does matter for quite a lot haha)
