I just used "Opal" to mean the Third Fourth Gen Game...

Anyway, I spoke to Riley today by turning around, and he mentioned Byron asked him to be a Gym Leader...so, maybe in the next game we'll have a Wallace/Juan/Steven thing?

Byron will become head of the E4, Shirley will be a Post-Game opponent, and Riley with his Lucario (they can give Maylene something else, like a Toxicroak) as the new Steel GL?

It is possible but the game, or Manga or Anime does not mention that Byron is a very good Trainer. In order to pull that off, he would've had to beat Cynthia (She'd be runner-up) he said no Champion position for me, Cynthia takes it and then yea. But it doesn't seem that he's all that great of a trainer. If anything I'd say toss Roark (Rorark or w/e his name is) put Byron there as a Steel leader, and then put in Riley as you know... uh, a combo gym leader? Like types with combo? Like, e.g. Infernape, Toxicroak, Lucario. Basically XXX type Fighting. Who knows xD

But, we haven't even seen Byron in the Anime or Manga...

There will be a Leader/Champion change in Opal, but it won't be Byron. When you first arrive in Sunyshore City, you learn from Volkner that he would like to challenge the Elite Four, leading me to suspect that he will become the Champion and Cynthia will be pushed to a Red/Steven postgame role in Opal.

Riley was my favorite character in the whole game, and he reminds me quite a bit of Lance. It won't happen, but it will be nice if he becomes the new head (not champion) of the Elite 4.

Actually, Byron acts like he wants to retire completely...

Maybe Riley takes over for Byron, Byron takes Riley's place on Steel Island, and Volkner moves to E4 and a brand new GL takes over?

What? No he doesn't. He wants to keep on training so he can battle with the next generation.

From the context it seemed like Byron was asking Riley to become the Oreburgh Gym Leader, but Riley thought Roark should get it.

Unlike Juan, Riley would have to find a substitute for his current "role" as one of the five Tag partners. With three characters seeking new occupations, a fourth character being invented for a fairly limited role as Riley's replacement, and finally a change of roster for Maylene -- is reusing Emerald's plot twist worth it all? It seems to me that you are all forgetting that it was the fact that Emerald pulled it off for the first time that made it unique; similar logic can be applied to any suggestions involving Giratina prior to the Elite Four challenge.

Other characters have toyed with the notion of becoming Gym Leaders. In Emerald, Brendan or May mentions the fact that Slateport is too big a city not to accommodate a Gym. He or she expresses fondness of the idea of being the leader of the non-existent gym. Such references should be taken with a grain of salt.

As for Volkner, he is associated with Flint, rather than with Cynthia. I would personally find it odd if he were to exceed Flint; Steven remained superior to Wallace even in Emerald. Besides, Luxray is the only Electric Sinnoh Dex Pokémon that is suitable for the late stages of the game; there is no room for two Electric-oriented trainers in Sinnoh.

In conclusion, I am of the distinct opinion that following Emerald's steps in regard to the central Pokémon and post-Elite Four trainer battle, would be an unoriginal move on Game Freak's part that would ulitmately garner little interest. If Mespirit were the central Pokémon as has already been hinted in Diamond and Pearl, perhaps the game could also incorporate a post-Elite Four trainer in the vein of Crystal - a trainer much like Red. In fact, incorporating May or Brendan would also be following Emerald, albeit in a different direction (Steven referring to her or his unknown path).

I agree with Unown Lord.

Besides, we're all expecting an Emerald twist. I'd perfer something different.

And whose's Shirley? *not ajusted to English names yet* DX
