I came up with the idea for this a little while ago. It's a piece based on concepts about the Fairy type and how much it's going to change a lot of things for competitive play, especially due to the Dragon type domination. Plus it was a lot of fun for me to write. It's written in a vague way, as that was part of the idea, like an old legend being passed down, etc. Anyway, here it is...
It's only around 1000 or so words long, so it isn't a huge read.
But let me know what you think!
Rise of the Fairies
The world was once said to crumble under the harsh winters of Ice, but I think that it is an unfitting end for a world such as this one.
This world is not made by one set of hands alone. No, it is the culmination of many that guides this world down the true path it is given. No gods or creators can shape the destiny of the many.
Our tale begins when the world was not new, but not old. A world small and large, granted existence and splendour by unknown forces. A bleakly coloured world that was but the beginning of something much greater. It is heralded as many by the legacy of our originators, the homeland of the beginning. It flourished and grew, the world growing and expanding unto unseen heights. It surpassed itself, and a happiness was known to all. From this happiness and prosperity did new opportunities come forth, and balance.
But there are those who are superior. And superiority can breed discrimination.
In truth, it is often the way that the superior lead the way for others with their talent, knowledge and wisdom.
They were called 'dragons'.
Their powers were unrivalled. They adapted quickly to change, and were both fierce and fearsome on the battlefield. Wherever they trod, ruin would surely follow. Their dominance was absolute.
No other creature could fight against them. Those who could were often described as heretics. Lunatics. Insinuators of ruin. But it was not so. Nature is not perfect, every creature has a downfall, big or small. The dragons had become arrogant within their power.
Or is that a lie? Who can say. Dragons had terrible power. Their tough hides resisted many elements, and their offensive powers could fell any foe. Perhaps it is not arrogance, but merely confidence in the absolution of their domination.
But it did not stop there.
As the world opened up, and the world knew more beauty, their ruthless conquest did not stop.
No, even more types of dragons came to aid their fight, and even more terrors came to their empire.
New tyrants bring new resistances. And the world shook under such resistance. But, sadly, their efforts were mostly in vain. The power they held over the world was solidified. A tight draconic grip that could not be undone. Too much time has passed. The other creatures of the world, both mighty and weak, had become expectant of such rule. They lived by it, swore by it. Some even supported it.
Alas, nothing is immortal. Every dream must end...not yet, mind you.
With the world in their grasp, and their dominance now a part of it, many had said dragons were comfortable sitting atop the world. They sat atop the mountains, soared the skies, and dived the deep seas. They even ventured into the darkness of existence.
In time, the dragons came to rule the far west, where lands were...different, and the towers touched the sky. From this land, came the birth of the strongest dragons yet, and the draconic grip on the world eclipsed it. It choked it. Other creatures rapidly began to suffer, their freedoms slowly crumbling.
They were led by the dark beast, Orochi. Fearsome, and born from the darkness, Orochi led the dragons on their conquest of the west.
Then it came. A fearsome beast. Empty like the essence it embodied, it was beyond comprehension.
It came from beyond the northern wastes of the world, where the cold is so chilling it could kill a man instantly. But this beast came from it, and brought with it harsh winters, and even greater powers for the dragons to dominate with.
More than ever, their rule was known. It was sewn so tightly and deeply into the consciousness. Could it ever be removed?
Do you remember me saying superiority breeds discrimination? Well, that works for other things, too. Tyranny breeds resistance. Oppression breeds the wish for freedom.
Deep in the hearts of the oppressed, a prayer had been made. A light had been lit. A wish, held by so many, had been born. Their prayers were answered, many years later, by an unknown force.
One word caused the whole world to shake. To crumble, to break.
Fairies.
Their rise was not sudden. The murmurs of a pink wolf running through mountains in moonlight began to stir. It was graceful, and leapt lightly, and was said to have arms coming out of its head and chest. Reality or dream, the entity played on the minds of many, like an old wives tale.
The unknown story is that his name is Oberon, King of the Fairies, dweller of moonlight.
Oberon ran through the world, far and wide, looking at the damage the dragons had caused. Everywhere he went, he saw the dreams and hopes of many.
With his coming, came others. Other Fairies. Some were never seen before, others were old creatures born anew by a glimmering dream. Their prayers answered, and a salvation promised.
It all happened in a single day & night. They rose up, their new powers as Fairies able to defeat dragons, and repel their monstrous powers. It allowed them to fight for their future. This began the changing of the world. Centuries of draconic rule crumbled in mere hours, and the dragons' empire followed. Everywhere they went, Fairies rose up from the mire of despair, shining their brilliant light upon the land, bringing the dream of freedom to reality, casting light on a world once abandoned by hope.
As the fight spread, the dark lord Orochi himself came forth, spewing fire and ruin and blasphemy from his many mouths. As fate would have it, all of Orochi's powers could not harm Oberon, who took it upon himself to answer the dark beast's challenge. Even as Orochi called forth waves of darkness, and rained down mighty meteors, not a one could touch Oberon. They fell around him, like the empire of draconian rule was falling around the world. Oberon cast Orochi back into the deepest abyss from whence he had crawled.
With that defeat, the empire that history had been built on was gone. Dragons fled, their power broken, and their loss a bitter one. But with that, a new hope had been brought forth for everyone, and a new world lay open to opportunity and exploration.
What happens next, you ask? Well...that bit isn't written yet.
